It’s very strange to watch a game and just hope for a winner.

I thought my son was going to have a heart attack today watching the Steelers game, and then he realized that a tie would screw him and he just went upstairs. He can’t handle that kind of tension.

That Chargers timeout might be the dumbest move of the season.

What a crazy day of football. Three teams win in OT to get into the playoffs, one in each time slot.

Big Ben gets his last gasp, and over the Ravens.

Niners come back from seventeen down.

Herbert has an insane eighteen play two minute drive with three or four different fourth down conversions, including the game tying td, and the OT comes down to a third FG to end it on the last play.

Wow. Can the playoffs top that?

Thinking back on it, this was the worse call. The LAC timeout arguably helped LV when they appeared to be playing it super safe, and that post-timeout play got them into FG range.

But the LV timeout inarguably took LV from a 100% chance of making the playoffs to a < 100% chance. Time was about to expire, which would have led to LV making it via a tie. By taking the timeout and electing for a FG try, LV reduced their chances of advancing. Granted, they were reduced by a small amount, but they were reduced.

Football culture, I guess. Gotta try for the win for the home crowd! It's an odd dichotomy given that NFL teams and coaches have no issues intentionally tanking an entire game via scrubs when there's no standing benefit at the end of the season, but weren't willing to do the same for one play in OT.

The announcers didn't mention it, but what might make up for it is that (I think) the Raiders face a different team with the W vs a tie. Their overall playoff qualifying odds were still reduced with the FGA in this case, but I could see how they might have taken 99.7% chance to face the Bengals (and 0.3% to miss the playoffs) vs 100% to face the Chiefs, for an example with approximate odds guesses.

I think it's clear the Raiders were going to try for the FG whether or not the Chargers called that TO. The chance that the FG attempt backfires is there, but so small it's worth the risk to avoid playing the Chiefs in the first round. In the end, the Chargers were doomed by what hurt them all season: they couldn't stop the run even when they knew it was coming. Too bad, though, I would've enjoyed watching them in the playoffs.

I was shocked when the Chargers called the timeout, but must admit the Raiders played it perfectly: make or miss and they were in. But they had an opportunity to stick it to their rivals and they took it. I just hope they are one and done.

And the Steelers and Ben live to see another day. Must admit Tomlinson is amazing to get them in. Sigh, guess I have to follow the Rams.

As my son was watching OT in horror (as a Steelers fan), it occurred to me that the Chargers had no incentive whatsoever to score a TD in OT. No matter the outcome (win or tie), they were going to BUF next week. Every ounce exerted makes it harder to prepare for that game.

The Raiders on the other hand had a decision to make. They had different outcomes based on whether they won or tied. Travel to KC or travel to CIN? Not exactly great options, but if those are my choices, I’m choosing to travel to CIN (win).

The only upshot of the Patriots losing and having to go to Buffalo is that the game is a bit of a win-win. I would like Buffalo to get a Super Bowl. So either the Bills get closer to getting Mr. Trubisky his ring, or the Patriots win and I get the bonus of imagining RM9's reaction.

Well, look, my favorite Super Bowl is Patriots over Buccaneers. But in general if the Boston team isn't winning, then I revert to rooting for a team to win which hasn't won in a long time. And the Bills haven't. PLUS we would have Super Bowl winner Mitchell Trubisky!

I can't root for anyone in the division. If it's not the Patriots, then I hope the earth opens up and swallows the SB stadium.

At least I can take solace in the fact that the Chargers weren't going anywhere with that porous defense. Pats at Bills will be a great match up.

I don't really care about division vs. non-division for the most part. The one exception is that I'd always root against the Jets, mainly because I enjoy making fun of how pathetic they are and would hate to lose that.

Uh, actually the Chargers lost and are out of the playoffs. Pretty big incentive to me...

Get TO the Super Bowl? Hmm. Given that Buffalo is 0-4, I think most fans want a * bit * more... ;)

At the time I had the thought, I was imagining them grinding the clock down more than they did (they had not taken the field yet). They got into FG range far too quickly. But yes, obviously their incentive in getting a TD was to avoid losing and missing out altogether.

I cannot thank the Chargers enough for calling that timeout, making it forever impossible to *really* know what the Raiders were thinking of doing there.

Check the weather report. :)

As of yesterday, Saturday night was the worst slot the Bills could draw, weather wise. I feel like the only purpose of this season is to convince the Pegulas to build Josh a dome.
