Godzilla Minus Zero was released a few days ago in Japan and made a billion Yen. Seriously (six and a half million USD). All signs point to this being great, maybe the stain of matthew Broderic will be finally cleansed from th franchise.

I am dying to see this. Reviews are through the roof on it.

Side note: I own a copy of Shin Godzilla from back in 2016. It was a Japanese Godzilla film that tried to go a different direction in some ways. It's fun, but if you watch youtube videos on what they were trying to do, it's pretty out there.

Can't wait to watch this also. i grew up on Godzilla. I remember going to spend the night at my aunt and uncles when I was less than 10 just to watch Godzilla movies. They had cable, I did not, my uncle would let me know when there was a Godzilla marathon.

Ok why is it called Minus One? Also what does he eat?

Ive loved Godzilla since I was a kid. My wife still had her 1' tall plastic Godzilla when I met her. It has a lever in back that moved his tongue in and out and spring loaded fists that fired. Also had wheels on the bottom of its feet.

Liked Godzilla over Kong as a kid but Ive come around to loving Kong now days too.

This was like it. Dang! That thing is worth like $1000

I remember seeing a B&W Mothra movie as a kid. I enjoyed it, but since then I have not been able to get into Godzilla movies. I've given them a fair shake and have decided it's just not for me.

What that means is that I'll probably watch this one too and bitch ad nauseum about how it doesn't do anything for me.

I have watched a number of movies, more than I can count. I think Pluto? has a Godzilla channel running them continiously.

I also watched some Anime, several movie length where the humans had to flee earth, and another series about red dust.

I enjoyed all of them. I also liked the various flavors of Pacific Rim, so I think maybe I am just a fan of giant monsters in general.
But I thought it was pretty silly IMHO to try and shoehorn King Kong into the same size and threat level as Godzilla.

Okay, here we go again. For the last time, Kong has opposable thumbs. That trumps laser breath every time!

King Kong 1933 - officially 50 feet tall, filmed as 18- 25 feet tall, the "hand" would have fit a 70 foot creature

King Kong 1976 - 42 feet
King Kong lives 1986 - 60 feet

King Kong 2005 (Peter Jackson) - 25 feet

Kong: Skull Island 2017- 106 feet
Godzilla Vs Kong 2021 - 337 feet

King Kong Vs Godzilla 1962 (Toho) - 148 feet
King Kong Escapes 1967 (Toho) - 66 feet

Godilla Classic - 164 and later 328
Godzilla Modern - 350 to 390 ft

So yeah, Kong needed more than just opposable thumbs, he needed a huge ramp up in size.

BUT, I think this is more like hulk vs superman situation. They are never going to be allowed to have a real go at it (any more) becuse its basically hollywood vs japan, and its lawyers who are deciding the victor, not the writers. So forever more we will always end up with improbbable last second team ups instead of true competition.

Okay, best kaiju films out of Japan that you've seen....GO!

My list (in order of release):

Original Godzilla (can't beat the first and greatest...but not the Americanized version)
Rodan
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Gamera (all three movies from the late 90s...they're surprisingly good: Guardian of the Universe, Advent of Legion, Revenge of Iris)
Big Man Japan (technically a dramedy about a guy who grows to giant size and defends Japan from monsters, but it's a fantastic movie I always recommend to people)
Shin Godzilla (a "reboot" of Godzilla under the "Shin" title which tries to recreate Godzilla as an evolutionary engine of destruction. The plans for the sequel were off the chart odd...look 'em up on youtube, they'll blow your mind)
Godzilla: The Planet Eater (this was an anime limited series on Netflix and it is immensely entertaining for fans of the big guy)

p.s. I hate Mothra

I'm pretty sure I've seen them all but cant remember details.
I do remember that Godzilla > King Kong

I was also a fan of Gamera, Jet Jaguar, and another giant robot movie. Something where a kid finds a watch and becomes the ruler of a giant robit that i think he calls...giant robot..but thats very hazy.

I just got back from Godzilla Minus One

holy fucking shirt balls, that was amazing
I liked it better than Dune, better than Endgame, and probably about the same as the LoTR trilogy.

Very little blood, no gore, I don't think I saw any jump scares. But man, it is a great horror film.

Godzilla Minus One: 97% Rotten Tomatoes FWIW.

Also, there’s a Godzilla series on Apple TV+ that I have on my ‘to watch’ list- gets an 85% on RT and stars…wait for it…Kurt Russell.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

I’ve been begging my son to stop playing Fortnite long enough to sit down and watch it with me but no joy to date.

Wait. Are you talkinf about Minus One?
If so, I'm unfortunately out. I have a lot of trouble watching anything in another language with only subtitles. I use subtitles in english speaking shows to help me follow nowadays, but if it's in another language I'm reading 90% of the time and watching the rest so not worth going to the movies. MAYBE wirth it on tv when I can rewind a lot.

I just can't reliably split my focus that way. I either watch and lose track of the dialogue, or I read and lose track of the scene.

For my if the audio is in English the English subtitles help me process whays being said. I'm not strictly rwading it though, more just glancing or akimming to make sure whay i tjink i heard matches what was said.
Didn't need to do this in the before times.

If audio is in another language I cant focus on the video and read. This was also true in the begore times though. It's why I generally dont watch anime unless it's been dubbed.

I’m the exact opposite. Dubbed just annoys me. The voices usually don’t seem to match the speaker, and they sometimes rush through the dialogue in order to fit things in. But i begrudge no one the right to watch it the way they want.

I dislike out-of-sync voices as well, but that's moot. It's not about preference for me (or apparently, Punisher.) It's about an inability to actually follow the content.

Imagine you have the movie playing on two different channels on the same screen. One is the film in the original language with no subtitles. The other is just the subtitles on a black screen. You can switch back and forth at will, but can't have both visible at the same time. That's what subbed shows are like for me.

It is, so far, Subtitle only. And the dialog is quite important. I am hoping it does well enough in USA that a dub version comes out. In the Sub vs Dub discussion, I am pro choice.
