One of these choices is not like the others
This poll popped into my head while I was washing dishes. So naturaully I rushed over to share it.
Of these three, which one would you choose to keep if the other two disappeared from your diet forever.
And by corn I mean, various types of cooked corn except popped. So on the cob, off the cob, creamed, etc.

I voted to keep corn but really all three could go away and I wouldn't be upset. Corn tortillas, tamales, and corn bread are all good but I could live without them.

Not a hard choice for me. Corn. Losing the other two wouldn't matter a bit to me.

Yep, if by corn, you mean corn disappears so no corn meal...then no brainer.
But if it was corn exists, you just can't have any dish with whole corn in it, then I want my pop.

Popcorn holds the #3 slot in my top three favorite foods so, yeah, I'll drink water and eat a variety of veggies just so long as I can have my popcorn.

Assuming tortilla chips are included in "corn" - is that correct?

Oh, and I went popcorn - without researching, it seem unique, and movies would not be the same without it. There are perfectly good substitutes for the others in general (corn on the cob being the main exception), but I'm not aware of anything like popcorn.

I can't remember the last time I had popcorn, probably microwave. I could/should live without soda pop, but they have a fountain drink of Agave sweetened at Jersey Mike's which is pretty dang good. But I actually buy canned corn and add it to my meals (plus the chips!).

Re: One of these choices is not like the others
Yeah, corn makes up a big share of the American diet when you include corn oil, corn meal, and corn syrup. Fresh on the cob, it's an easy summer side dish. Frozen corn goes into lots of soups and stews. Definitely need corn.
I enjoy popcorn every now and then. For xmas my family sent us some fancy snacks that included chocolate-covered caramel corn, which sounds fatally sweet but was actually pretty good. 160 calories per 1/4 cup, though...that's like 4 kernels.
If soda pop went away I wouldn't even notice.

I don't eat 'corn' as such very often, but there are a ton of products that rely on it that I do eat, so it becomes the de-facto answer.

Right. I'm taking corn very literally as whole kernels of cooked corn, whether on or off the cob. Given that popcorn doesn't fall under corn, I'm assuming neither does tortilla chips, corn meal, or any other corn derivative.

Oh. Well, I still cook with and eat corn way more often than I eat popcorn, and "pop" is right out, so I am prepared to die on this hill.

I don't think about corn if left to my own devices, but if it is served at a nearby table or mentioned "someplace" then I am suddenly hungry for it. I'd keep corn, but I'd have to get serious about brewing tea at a steady clip without access to soda pop.

Flour is okay, but it's not corn. And hand pressed corn tortillas are some of the best things in the world.
During the lockdown I taught myself how to make my own corn tortillas. I'm terrible at it, and they are ugly little buggers, but they are 1000 times tastier than store bought.

It’s blasphemy to some, but I have to agree. Although I lately have found that the corn tortilla tacos at the local mercado down the street from me are mighty good.

Corn tortillas can be great - but most aren't. Most are grainy, crumbly, and either too dry or mushy. They seem to have a very short window in which they're actually edible.

They each have their places. One can only use flour tortillas as burrito wraps, and must use corn tortillas with huevos rancheros. Corn also makes superior tacos and chips. Whole-wheat flour tortillas, sadly, are useless.

Flour in almost every case except tamales, those require corn for me.

Seeing as tamales are steamed masa wrapped in a corn husk, and in no way involve a tortilla, I'd say corn is pretty much a requirement for anyone enjoying themem2nought wrote:Flour in almost every case except tamales, those require corn for me.

Flour tortillas are the preferred accompaniment for side use as bread or rolling up mini egg burritos. However, the foundational tortilla must be corn.
However,
So this argument is off topic. It probably belongs in R&P anyway, since basing huevos on flour is a sin. It's right there in the Bible.

I loves my Dr. Pepper Zero. Never been a huge popcorn fan, and my dentures make eating corn an unpleasant challenge.

Re: One of these choices is not like the others
The only times I've had something served in/on a corn tortilla that wouldn't have been better with flour was the occasional food I got from a specific Mexican place in Reno that was under an overpass in a really poor part of town, at which not one person spoke English. They absolutely had good corn tortillas.
Outside of that, I'll take flour over the grainy mess that's a corn tortilla any day!

I think some of you should question your life choices. It's tragic how few of you have had a good corn tortilla.
Now, corn smut. Is that pop, corn, or popcorn? And has anyone tired it? It looks disgusting, but I'm curious.

Yes. My point was that tamales are made from corn and the use of any type of tortilla, especially flour, is doing something fundamentally wrong.Jaymann wrote:Isn't masa made from corn meal?

Corn smut is delicious (at least it was the one time I had it many years ago at Big Jones in Andersonville).
I like flour tortillas for burritos, quesadillas, and steak tacos. Corn tortillas for most other uses. I pity those who do not have access to tasty corn tortillas.
That's my purse! I don't know you!
