Want 2 x DDR4-2666 8GB, go Crucial, or buy Newegg generic?

Post by Kasey Chang »

When I bought my PC many years back, it's got only 16GB RAM (in 2 x 8GB DDR4-2666 A-Data) and seems I have 2 more DIMM slots, so I'm thinking about adding another 2 8GB modules to make it 32GB.

So far, prices are:

Amazon: Crucial 2 x 8GB kit for $40

Crucial: 2 x 8GB kit for $37 (but it appears to be backordered)

Newegg: Timetech (with Hynix RAM) 2x 8GB kit for $30

Local vendor: no 2 x 8GB kit available, will sell 2 separate Crucial 8GB UDIMMs for $50.

I doubt the prices are going any lower...

Crucial, Gskill, and Patriot are all good ones Ive used with no problems. As for filling 4 slots do you need that much for something other than gaming? Gaming really needs only 16 and Ive seen reports that filling more than 2 slots can be slower than just having 2.

Also, you'll need to check your motherboard documentation to see if it is quad channel.

I'd at least check the prices on 16GB x 2 if your system supports it. Mismatched memory can cause all sorts of problems.

No quad channel on this this MB. If I fill up 4 banks it'd operate in dual channel mode as well.

Checking 2 x 16GB shows everything $54 and above, at least at Newegg.

Alas, that particular large town is increasingly spiraling into a doom loop.

If memory serves, I vaguely recall a Micro Center store that was located at The Mercado near Mission College back in the nineties. But there's currently only a single Micro Center in the entire state of California, and it's located in Tustin/SoCal.

Correct, no Microcenter anywhere near me. There *was* one around San Jose, but that closed MANY MANY years ago, even before Fry's went belly up.
