New laptop for the kid time (again)

Post by Zenn7 »

Previous laptop from 2021 seems to be shot (see http://octopusoverlords.com/forum/viewt ... p?t=100582 thread if you want more info on that).

LENOVO IP3I 1135G7/8/512/15.6H - that's what I got him last time. Until now, it's been good, no issues.

This is on sale for $450, in stock at Microcenter (like 25-30 miles away). Looks sorta like an upgraded version of the other one.

Other than sadly only having 8GB ram still, which works for his needs - this look good?
Tech Radar gave it good review (4 stars) for a budget laptop.

They only had 1 in store, so bought it (online) for in store pickup (pay in store, auto canceled if I don't pick it up in 3 days). Planning to do that tomorrow after work (cause driving around on Halloween seems like the stupidest thing I could do, so why not). Run it through a few PC tests (cpu, ram, heat test programs, just to make sure), make sure it's up to date and try to remove a little of the bloatware/unnecessary options.

I just picked up a cheap HP from Office Depot for $250. Similar rigs are at Staples. It''s nothing special but it's surfs and streams and spreadsheets which are my main functions for a mobile workstation. As you say, 8 gigs ram without having to dink with it, is the floor for such things

Thanks LM.

That one had a few complaints about being more fragile where the one I linked is marketed as being more rugged (reality probably varies a bit).

Since he takes it all over with him, definitely don't want a fragile laptop!

Besides, he does play a handful of games (Dungeon Defender, Orcs Must Die 2, Gemcraft - Frostborn Wrath, RPG Maker (various), PLAGUE, INC, Minecraft. Nothing too beefy, but thought the Ryzen 3 was the AMD economy processor.

I picked this one up (and we got 2 reams of printer paper for $1.99 each and a cheap keyboard).
