Community Map

Post by Odin »

One of the things I always thought was cool at GG was the community map that showed where various members were located. I have no idea who kept it updated and I'm not offering to do it myself (I'm nowhere near reliable enough with my job & family responsibilities taking precedence), but in case anyone else thought it was a good idea and wanted to do it, I figured I'd toss out a reminder that it had once existed.

It was Jeff Jones who created and maintained it. When he took a break from the forums for a bit, he passed it on to... some other person who shall remain nameless. When this 'person' received it, there were more than 120 entries that needed to be found and added, and this person never did get around to finding an entire weekend to get it caught up, thus failing utterly and miserably in their accepted duty.

In any case, here was the last version.

I shall now throw myself from the Bridge of Shame.

Actually, I think you have to tie yourself to the Tree of Woe.

The Bridge of Shame is for Quarter to Three.

Yep, I started it - gosh, i think it was back in 2002, maybe '03. I'd entertain the idea of doing a new one for OO. One problem BH & I ran into though, was the crowdedness of certain areas. It became quite difficult to get the names to fit.

I had/have zero photoshop type skills, so the map ended up looking like I'd done it with crayons by the time I turned it over to BH.

An idea I had though, is that if someone knew Java, or maybe Flash, we could do a really cool one, with names popping up on hover or something like that.

Good to hear at least that the folks involved are still hanging around and that the original still exists. Glad I brought it up - hopefully it can be OO-ized and live on.

I'd done a newer version I can't seem to find right now. In it, I'd simply labeled huge population centers with numbers, then made a seperate key to who lived on those numbers. It saved a ton of space.

Oh, and for the record, the last modified date on that map was: Saturday, July 27, 2002, 2:52:43 PM

Google Earth would be an easy way to do it, though a bit stalker-ish.

I don't think I want to get quite that specific. I see the personal pictures people post here and I think they forget that while they might intend them only for members of the "community" (ie. the people they know on this board), anybody anywhere can dial up this URL and look at that stuff, and it'll be here for years barring mishap. That's creepy.

I'd volunteer to maintain and host one using Google Maps. It's kind of fun to play around with.

Here's the idea:

http://www.rossk.net/maps/oomap

I'm sure you can do more things like on hover or have the balloons pop-up automatically at a certain zoom. I just haven't gotten that far into it.

It doesn't have to be that specific either - folks can post their coordinates at a level they're comfortable. If you just want it to reflect that you live in Seattle, then only post coords specific to the center of the city or something.

Anyway, if there's interest, I'm game.

Works for me

Oddly enough, the map shows all sorts of teeny little places around the city of Syracuse, but not the city itself. Luckily I know where it is. :D

Nice, Mookee!

'tis I.

Gads, this thing is deperessing. The hills I hung out in during my teenage years in Reno are subdivisions. The park I played in when I was 10 is now some sort of business. My first school, Sierra Vista Elementary, is now Sierra Vista Mall.
