Surprise new track from Myrkur today, with a new album announcement for Oct 20. Yay!

She's not really metal any more (last album was entirely Norwegian folk songs and this one sounds more darkwave-ish), but I still adore her. Woman has the voice of an angel.

Always happy to oblige, as the greatest (imo) and the most completely insane metal band ever to exist hails from Japan. :)

Stewart Copeland - Police Deranged for Orchestra

i was highly skeptical about this going in, as i don't like 'orchestral renditions' and i am a huge Police fan (i own multiple copies of their albums on vinyl, cassette and CD), but i gave it a chance as i trust Stewart knows what he's doing. so it turns out this is way more fun than it has any right to be. to me the best part are the (exclusively) female vocalists on this project - they are very good! i will absolutely be revisiting this in the future.

Concert for Lin on WXRT. The concert, a charity fundraiser in the name of the late Lin Braemer, was last weekend and sold out instantly. Thankfully, the radio station is broadcasting their recording tonight. So far, the performances have been excellent, Los Lobos is the headliner I believe, with Bob Mould and a collection of musicians calling themselves "The Linburgers" playing now and man are they good.

Im going through KISS music from the 70s and 80s. Its nice i can go online and listen to all the music from the double platinum album since my 8 tracks no longer work. And yes Im even listening to Disco KISS lol.

Heres a more rare KISS song because its sung by Peter. It was supposedly written by Paul for Rob Stewart who turned it down.

Cleopatra Records (of course) just issued this "Tribute to Rammstein" album which i would have totally ignored, except Laibach is on it and they picked (what is, for them) the most obvious choice to cover:

That was really interesting. I don't think I liked it. But. I listened to the whole 5 mins, and I really curious about what he did with the other songs. And maybe it grows on me? Really interesting, and I had no clue Copeland had done this. Thanks for sharing it.

EDIT: I like "Every Little She Does Is Magic" more. I wonder if it's because the source material is strong on these songs, or skillful re-imagining....

EDIT 2: Listened to the whole album. Entertaining. Nothing groundbreaking, but very interesting versions. Also saw he re-did the Police songs more recently with multicultural musical influences. "Beyond Borders". I have that bookmarked on Spotify to listen to soon.

Man, this song is good.

Even though Maps is 20 years old, I still think of it as music for the youths, because it came out in when I was in my late 20s and had stopped keeping up with new music.

Seeing Avatar/Orbit Culture/Native Howl tomorrow. I didn't know of Orbit Culture before buying my tickets, and initially hated the Hetfield-esque cleans that accompany the growls. But the band's really grown on me since then! I hope I get to see them headline at some point. They've got some deeeeeep grooves and heavy drops alongside these wonderful, mellow melodic sections.

I'm obsessed with the section of this song that begins around 2:50, evolving from a gentle piano into a light bagpipe-like electronic drone that sounds like something from Matmos's The Civil War (the progression reminds me of Reznor), before being slammed by this intense blackened riff. (No idea what's going on with these tortured souls eating gross food and puking blood, sorry.)

There's a similarly powerful section beginning at 2:15 in The Shadowing.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Been listening to Orbit Culture quite a bit this week. Hadn't heard of them before you posted, so thanks for the heads-up.

They're such an odd band. I don't really like the Metallica-esque cleans and some of their stuff edges right up to the nu-metal line that turns me off...then they'll drop an absolutely soul-crushing, bone-grinding, destroy-your-brain heavy riff that makes me start a one-man moshpit in my office.

I'm finding those complete face-melting moments outweigh the bits I don't like, so they're in regular rotation now.

While I've been mostly meh on everything they've done since, TV on the Radio's "Dear Science" album is sheer brilliance. Every single track is an absolute banger.

Yes!! Finally new album coming!!

Looks like they have a new drummer too. Damn that stinks, I really liked Derek Grant.
In June 2023, Grant announced his departure from Alkaline Trio, saying in a release that "The demands of a touring band have become increasingly difficult in previous years", and citing that it is the best thing for him to do for his mental health. He was with Alkaline Trio for 22 years.

I was recently watching a video of a tourist in Hanoi. Hanoi was much nicer looking than I had pictured it. Very French colonial.

New single from Green Day dropped; new album coming in early 2024. If you know who that is, it's probably time to schedule a colonoscopy.

I've mentioned before that my prime 80's guilty pleasure band is Men Without Hats. While their radio hits were fluffy pop filler, their other tracks always had a very slight hint of goth sensibilities that appealed to me. Listen to this and tell me you don't hear some Sisters of Mercy influence in there.

Anyways, their last album in 2012 ("Love in the Age of War") is far more fun than it has any right to be.

I've never liked anything from them before or since, but "American Idiot" was a goddamn masterpiece.
