Re: What are you listening to right now?
New album from The Smile is out today - A LIGHT FOR ATTRACTING ATTENTION.
The Smile is a band made up of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, Tom Skinner from Sons of Kemet, and produced by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.
If you think this means this album will sound like Radiohead just like every other non-Radiohead project featuring Radiohead members, you would be correct.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
The new album from Master Boot Record is an absolute blast. It's chiptune metal, so think of what it would sound like if your favorite arcade or SNES game were to suddenly spit out a metal album. Lots of cheezy synths, drums, and awesome guitar riffs. Entirely instrumental, no vocals. It's an awesome album to work out to.
Someone in a FB solo gaming group was looking for ambient music to play while playing dungeon crawlers, and Depressive Silence came up as a recommendation. Not even really sure what you'd call it...gothic darkwave synth ambient, maybe? Regardless, it's some really great, chill background music.

I'm not much of a metal guy, so I didn't realize the preponderance of black and white album covers until recently. One of our local record stores does a Facebook live sale every Thursday, and a couple of weeks ago was metal week. I swear I think *every* metal album they showed (out of probably 15-20) was a black and white cover.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
The new Septicflesh album that came out today is something special. They've done a really remarkable transition from a decent-but-forgettable death metal band to one of the genre leaders and true craftsmen in symphonic metal.
For me, different metal styles can elicit different images. Black metal is freezing winds howling over a bleak landscape. Atmospheric metal is a fall walk through the woods. Death metal is quick bursts of aggression and ultraviolence. Goth is creeping shadows in hazy, candlelit castles. Etc, etc. Few bands do as well as Septicflesh at creating a feeling of something huge and menacing. It's a zombie war elephant that is lumbering ever closer, picking up speed as it eventually crushes you underfoot. It's a giant shadowy mass that is creeping over the horizon, bringing terror and death as it comes.
Their last two albums have felt absolutely massive, simply crushing you under their weight. The opening track ("The Collector") is a great example. It starts off with light folksy melodies...then absolutely destroys you with a gigantic riff. It's brilliant, and I fucking love it.
And it sticks with the black/white cover theme!
Also, Cynic just posted this on YT. It's video from a 2010 show in Mexico that they thought had been lost. Shows them at their musical pinnacle playing one of their best songs, but makes me terribly sad knowing that half the people on that stage are now dead (bassist Sean Malone from suicide and drummer Sean Reinert from suspected heart attack). They were truly something special.

I'm so obsessed with this band right now. I don't care if it's Sabbath worship. It's not as if the world doesn't need an endless supply of Sabbath.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
There was a show on Reelz last night about Van Halen - something about 6 songs that define the band. I'm a sucker for that kind of content about bands I like (no way was I watching the EVH autopsy show that preceded it, however), so I tuned in. It was fine (although they do a poor job of saying which are the actual 6 songs), and I found it interesting that they didn't gloss over the Gary Cherone era. In fact, the last song was a Cherone song. The talking heads they had on mentioned how Eddie largely had free reign on that album without any strong producers trying to keep him in check, so it was kind of a peek into where his mind would go musically if he had no constraints.
I haven't listened to VH III in ages, as I didn't like it much at the time (I align with the masses on that one, apparently!). This inspired me to give it another play, so I put it on for the ride home after dropping off the twins at school this morning. It has some interesting musical stuff in there and Eddie's guitar playing sounds different than what came before (and not in a bad way). It really is all over the place, however, and I really do not like Cherone's contributions - his voice/style and lyrics don't work for me. I'll finish listening to it when I pick the twins up this afternoon, but that should do me on the album for another decade or two.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Finished the VH III listen, and it didn't get any better. Other than the musical interludes, every song is 5:20+, with some going inexplicably 7 or 8 minutes. The music has its interesting moments, but it's inconsistent. The singing and lyrics are poor throughout (although I'm sure that some people like Cherone's style, it's not for me). I think I need to listen to Fair Warning as an aural palate cleanser.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Polvo's Siberia (2013) is such an amazing indie/progressive/math record. I wish I hadn't waited nine years to listen to it. Polvo used to be melodic in their own atonal, discordant way. But this album (their most recent) would probably be best described as "mature" in the positive sense. It doesn't have some of the abrasiveness and experimentation of their classic recordings (though it's still present in places like on the first track), but it's a wonderful evolution of their sound.

This new Imperial Circus Dead Decadence album is a blast. Hailing from Japan (so you know it'll be weird), it's a mix of the best parts of Cthonic, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Gyze, and Cradle of Filth. Symphonic, gothic, melodic, highly technical, and completely insane.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
It is apparently Japanese metal day. Yay!!
Sigh - my #1a (with Wilderun) for best current metal band right now - put out the first song from their new album this morning, along with a release date of Aug 26. I simply adore these guys, and have been spinning this song nonstop for the past couple hours. I love the proggy weirdness, which hearkens back to their "Imaginary Sonicscape" days.
Between Sigh, Wilderun, Ghost, Septicflesh, and Zeal & Ardor (so far), there's going to be some serious competition for best 2022 album.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Was pleased to see this album turn up on Spotify. It definitely wasn't on the Canadian version the last time I looked.
I'm enjoying some of their tracks but the male clean vocals sound like they're from a lounge act. I know that's just a Japanese thing though.Skinypupy wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 10:23 am This new Imperial Circus Dead Decadence album is a blast. not sure if you're familiar with the run of albums Killing Joke have put out since that one, but many are excellent. Youth rejoining the band after Paul Raven's death was good fortune.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Right. He didn't just remove the distortion, he swapped it with a 60s era sounding spring reverb, and added a generic surf rock drum fill. Not all black metal uses this guitar picking technique (tremolo) so it isn't 100% going to work but it's common. You also see it often in punk and indie rock as well. He could have just as easily swapped in a RAT distortion tone and a grunge drum fill and claimed all black metal is grunge rock. Most music is a sound built around an idea based on many of the same techniques.
