Could they make melodic aggressive death metal with lyrics about miniature schnauzers? I'd buy that.

Not one, not two, not three...not even four electric guitars. They go with five and sometimes six. Ah, Finland. You are so wonderfully weird.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Two Fridays in a row we get a new melodic death metal from a band whose name begins with "A". This week it's Arch Enemy. They had put out more than the normal amount of singles than is the norm, so I was already familiar with some of the songs. In any event, I really like it. There is one song where they let Alissa do some nice clean vocals and it's unsurprisingly good. (Much better than the tepid weak vocals done on the ill conceived power ballad from Will to Power.) I was curious to see how much they would blend clean/harsh vocals, and the answer is - only on that song.
Amusingly, like Amon before them this is a short album at almost the exact same length (42-43 minutes). I am enjoying it a lot, but for the "more of the same" police, it may not be for you. But, in theory you would have dropped Arch Enemy a while ago...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
haha! No worries. I have certainly been there with many bands where I get bored and take years off without listening to them. In fact, it's happened before with Arch Enemy! I gave them a break for several albums and then got back into them when I saw a video of "The World is Yours" on YouTube a few years ago.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Since I'm now driving all day, I'm listening to radio more than I have in decades. Bluetooth does not play well with the Uber app (it suppresses ride offers) and besides, not many customers are keen to listening to a book I'm in the middle of. So I play WXRT -- given the vast range of styles and their reputation for playing deep cuts over the past 50 years, I'm surprised how repetitive their play list is...even with old stuff. I've heard Peter Gabriel's Steam 4 times in the past week, the Talking Heads Burning Down the House also 4 times, and numerous other oldies played on an almost daily basis. The new stuff they play get played several times a day...I don't really have a gripe with that, except some of the songs don't hold up to the umpteenth listen.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Wiki
When at age 50 Cohen first recorded the song, he described it as "rather joyous", and said that it came from "a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm, with emotion."[13] He later said "there is a religious hallelujah, but there are many other ones. When one looks at the world, there’s only one thing to say, and it’s hallelujah"
...
Cohen's lyrical poetry and his view that "many different hallelujahs exist" is reflected in wide-ranging covers with very different intents or tones, allowing the song to be "melancholic, fragile, uplifting [or] joyous" depending on the performer
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
It's one of the most-covered songs there is.
Written by Leonard Cohen, it's a meeting-place of spirituality and sexuality. There are numerous versions and something like 70 optional verses, some of them suitable for church/temple, some of them for the bedroom.
(Some of the core references are to the Biblical relationships of David & Bathsheba, David & God, and Samson & Delilah.)

Re: What are you listening to right now?
That's hard to say. Cohen was a secular Buddhist Jew, but it's clear that he's drawing on the power of religious tradition here.
The word "Hallelujah" literally means "Praise the Lord." Cohen's treatment here is ambiguous about God, but the expressed longing is very much based in spirituality (whether whole or broken).

Not a black metal fan per say, but I love me some Behemoth. I really like this album as well. I avoided the songs that have been released the past few weeks because I've been eagerly awaiting this album for months.Skinypupy wrote:Enjoying the new Behemoth album more than I was expecting to.

I’ll have to check it out. I wasn’t even aware they were still working, to be honest. The last I paid attention to them, they were going under the pseudonym MDFMK. Next you’re going to tell me Laibach is releasing new stuff.
Edit: well heck, Laibach is releasing new stuff.
Looks like they’re mostly performance art and stage shows these days though.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
That was over 20 years ago lol. I've only given a serious listen to half of the post-2000 stuff. With a few exceptions they just weren't the same after En Esch and Guenter Schulz left. One comment I read today is that they pretty much became an AC/DC and fail to distinguish themselves anymore, which I think is accurate. But each album has at least a couple worthwhile tracks. 2017's Hell Yeah has some good ones.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Yeah, as I said, it’s been a long time since I thought of them. I remember how Rip Up the System took us all by surprise back in the day, though. They brought power chords to industrial. Well, they probably weren’t the first, but they did kind of perfect it.
But a lot of industrial kind of just devolved into EDM it felt like, so my interest waned.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Welcome to my world when it comes to death/speed metal.
I don't find them that cringey or stupid in comparison to most of their peers in the genre. They have had more than their fair share of critical acclaim over the years, so I'm obviously not the only one that appreciates some of their work. They also are a politically charged band with actual messages in much of their music, so hats off to them for attempting to rise above the pack when it comes to lyricism.
