Still can't believe they were 15. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise - the early 1990s were awesome.

I’m still firmly stuck in the 40’s. That’s about all I listen to…swing/jazz/Big Bands/American Songbook stuff. Have for years now. It’s comfort listening to me.

Always had a certain fondness for that song. Not sure it's actually a very good song though... :D

But I'll keep being fond of it!

In German class in high school we had to learn 99 Luftballoons along with a few other goofy German pop songs. I think we also learned Walk Like an Egyptian in German. It was fun.

Edit - here's one of them - imagine the WTF on our faces when the teacher brought this out:

List of 2023 Top 10 Albums at the midway point:

1. Thy Catafalque - Alfold
2. Hellripper - Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags
3. Enslaved - Heimdal
4. Dodheimsgard - Balck Medium Current
5. Bell Witch - The Clandestine Gate
6. Bloodgutter - Death Mountain
7. Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite
8. Hellish Form - Deathless
9. Ov Sulfur - The Burden Ov Faith
10. Oak Pantheon - The Absence

Favorite song: Hellripper - "I, The Deciever"

Dissapointing Album: Toss up between Ghost's "Pantomime" EP (a bunch of mostly bland covers) and The Ocean's "Holocene" (a couple stellar tracks and a bunch of boring filler).

After we went and saw Melissa Etheridge this week, I had her fantastic album Yes I Am on rotation, but I switched over to a different 21st Century Playlist of Florence + the Machine and Chvrches.

I am constantly impressed with how lyrical and poetic Florence's lyrics are. So amazing!

I had no idea Scar Symmetry had resurfaced with a new album, their first in a decade. It's still the same mix of syrupy-sweet melodies interposed with absolutely brutal death metal that I used to love from them.

Really liking this new one.

Alabama Shakes. Not sure how I completely missed them.

Discovered King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. I see they've played a mishmash of genres and have released 24 albums in 13 years. I see Nonagon Infinity's been mentioned here before, but so far it's their metal albums albums I've been listening to, PetroDragonic Apocalypse and especially Infest the Rats' Nest. The latter is a pessimistic stoner thrash masterpiece.

I especially dig Mars For The Rich:
Mars for the privileged
Earth for the poor
Mars terraforming slowly
Earth has been deformed
Just forget it, ya ain't coming here
The ticket's too dear
I stare sadly into my beer
That world has no place for me

No idea WTF's going on in the videos, but the music's great. NSFW for gun violence and general weirdness.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

I discovered King Gizzard a few months back through a friend but their discography left me.....intimidated. I may suck it up and just start going through them all though. I love how crazy prolific and genre-jumpy they are.

The new Fleshvessel album “Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed” is a truly fascinating piece of work. It’s core is death metal, but these immensely talented musicians zig and zag in so many musical directions that it’ll make your head spin. They bring together a fascinating and eclectic mix of instruments. One minute you’re listening to a standard guitar/bass/drum, the next minute a flute solo, then a mandolin and a glockenspiel, followed by a full orchestral arrangement, capped off by a…wait, was that a zither and a theramin? It’s fun to simply try and pick out just what the hell they’re playing at any given moment.

While it does have some beautiful melodic passages (reminds me a bit of Wilderun's riffs) it’s not an easy listen, for sure. It reminds me of learning a new language where everything sounds discordant and off-kilter, right up until your brain begins to process how the pieces fit together and it starts to make perfect sense. It tickles all the chaotic and creative parts of my brain, much the same way I imagine freeform jazz does for others.

It certainly won’t be everyone’s cup-o-tea, but I find it absolutely fascinating. A quite unexpected entry into this year’s top 10 list.

Yeah, the first time I saw and heard them I was bowled over. I thought I saw them first on the Colbert show but couldn't find any video of that. Maybe it was one of the SNL clips below.

It felt like no time at all between me learning about them and them going on hiatus.

Last week when I was at summer camp for a week with Scouts, one of my Assistant Scoutmasters that live in the neighborhood of the camp brought me a present to play with. He brought in an old hand cranked Victrola style portable record player and a big old tub of 78s. I had a tremendous time listening to old 78s from the 40's and 50's. The sound fidelity and volume from this completely mechanical non electronic music box was amazing.

Most of the 78's was stuff I had never heard of, from obscure artists...a lot of cowboy music too. But the most amazing one that I found was a beautiful copy of "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire" by the Ink Spots. An actual shout of "OH MY GOD!" came out of my face. And it sounded beautiful, even with the crackles and pop. I played that one about 3-4 times in a row.

But man, now I want to find an old victrola and starting collecting 78s...

This single is Ministry's most Ministry-sounding track in twenty years. Which is either a welcome return, or a cynical attempt to recapture past glories. You, dear listener, decides. Album's out March 2024.

My local record store has an online show every week, and they always have a nice selection of used albums. This one came up and for some reason the album cover just really fascinated me. I bought it on a complete whim, having never heard of the band or this album. Heck, I didn't even know what kind of music it was. It became one of my favorite records in my entire collection.

Turns out Tranquility was a band formed in 1971 by British musician Terry Shaddick, whose biggest claim to fame was later co-writing Olivia Newton-John's hit "Physical." The band was really nothing but an assemblage of prog and psych session musicians that Shaddick hired to perform his songs. The lineup was never consistent, and band members dropped in and out throughout the entire album session. That doesn't mean the album was low quality - it was engineered by Keith Harwood who would go on to work with Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and David Bowie.

Tranquility made one follow-up album, Silver, but never found success. Their label dropped them, everyone went their separate ways, Shaddick became a songwriter, and they were lost to history. Both albums are fantastic, and their sophomore album is more well-known, but I have a soft spot for the first one due to the way I ran across it.

They played that one when I saw them live earlier in the year. It was the only one of the "new stuff" part of the set that I really liked.

I've been spinning lots of folks metal over the weekend. Throw an accordion, a fiddle, a tin whistle, and a hurdy gurdy into some metal, and I'm generally all over it.

Crazy that video has over 11M views. Such a catchy tune...the whole "Sagas" album is brilliant.
