Voting Discussion Thread

Post by Peacedog »

This is where you can discuss the voting going on in the Domain Name Voting Thread. Here you are free to argue for, expound on, theorize about, guess at, critique, laugh about, analyze, write poetry for, and solicit support for the votes in the DNVT. Please try to keep this about the 2 domain names, and the voting therein.

Do stop and vote, if you want to. Please read the rules.

Again, this was a decision that we thought was best placed in the hands of the community. So, show us that you care, or can pretend to, and vote.

Lastly, it is ok to rail on the lack of choices on this thread, but this is the place to do it (not the other).

Just out of curiosity, why are you not using the beautiful polling abilities of phpBB?

This is crazy. It OO doesn't win, I quit. :)
And in banks across the world
Christians, Moslems, Hindus, Jews
And every other race, creed, colour, tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly
Make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

OctopusOverlords.com!

Point 1: The octopus is a clearer theme with a ton of graphical and thematic options... the brutesquad is... what? We going to have a picture of some dudes standing around pretending they are tough?

Point 2: It isn't associated with the #1 movie of teenage boys who call their 'girlfriend' 'Buttercup'.

Point 3: I heard a rumour about some badass octopus overlord artwork that has already been seen by some folks. ;)

I'm with Kratz, options for themeing are WAY better with OO.com
Also, brutesquad sounds a little too much like we're trying to be cool. It's a fun "in-joke" to run around in lime-green speedos as an overweight geek, but it's not as good when you try to reach others with it. Badass Octopods is better then.

Also, did we not use the polling system because of the 5 post minimum thing?

I assume the polling can be cheated.

.com is sooooooooooo much better than .net

I actually kind of like both names, but the octopus is zanier, and I think a little originality is a good thing.

They're both .com addresses (octopusoverlords.com and thebrutesquad.com)

There will be no lime green speedos...that was funny as a joke, but it wouldn't make good sense.

Brute Squad was not an original thought for the maker of The Princess Bride. It's a group of fighters who band together and fight as a unit...they may not be highly trained or fearsome warriors, and individually they won't accomplish much, but as a group, they're a force to be reckoned with...together, they're much more powerful than the sum of their parts.

OctopusOverlords is not a name I'll be terribly proud of talking about with my non-gaming friends.

Brute Squad is easy to say (2 syllables that flow well).

OctopusOverlords is 6. Why do you think Spiderman doesn't say "Doctor Octopus" everytime? Cause short words flow better.

Imagine, "Good morning, my name is Grandy Peace - I represent OctopusOverlords.com and would like you to consider <doing something for the site>"
"Octopus...Overlords? OhhKay..."

The name's already registered. I think we can have some real fun with it, but I don't think it should be our identity, nor do I think it fits well with what we want the site to be...namely: successful.

I totally expected your Grandy Peace line to end with "Prepare to die."

I'm leaning towards Octopus Overlords.

It is a pretty big mouthful, I'll just abbreviate it to OctO

I disagree that OO will hurt the site from succeeding. It's got an equal chance to succeed as TBS does.

If a consortium of giraffes were in charge, how would you refer to them?

And brutesquad has that very unfortunate acronym. The syllable thing is an issue, but the reason Spiderman doesn't say "Doctor Octopus" is because names can be abbreviated. OctO sounds kinda cool I have to say. BS sounds, well, like BS.

My understanding is that that URL will always be a direct link to these forums, allowing you to skip the front page at your leisure.

Am I the only one who finds it very humorous that a guy named Nade(r) wants to vote for a 3rd party that won't win? :)

Since there's only two to choose from I assume someone has already claimed them for the site?

I in no way think Brute Squad sounds like someone trying to be "too badass." It is a good url because it's non specific. Which some might say isn't good, but sixsyllableoverlords is specific enough to be misleading.

the OctO's (i like that) will kill you if you vote brutesquad. All the brutesquad will do is beat you up. And they are all computer nerds, so even that is debateable.

Could you just delete the posts that aren't following the rules? It seems to have a cumulative effect when people see others doing it or feel the need to reply to the others doing it...

Too easy to hack. While I doubt anyone here would have the inclination to do so, there are quite a few people who have the mad skilz. ;)

Curved. And they're for dicing.

And I probably should have made that clear from the get go, that this is the appropriate place to bitch about the lack of choices. If it's somehow related to domain name selection, this is the place for it.

We are easily able to check posts and behind-the-scenes data to make sure people aren't registering ten different newbie accounts just to make sure their choice wins.

We can't do that with the poll. At least not yet...

I like OctopusOverlords.

1) We can use "OctO" as an abbreviation. It's kinda clever AND easy to pronounce.

2) It had a strong theme that's pretty unique. I mean, how many "Oh we're super dorks!" sites are there?

3) The potential for the art would be awesome.

However:

1) We have to be careful we don't get pigeon-holed into a gimmick. We we tip either way in the balance between over-the-top-tired-gimmick and we-just-picked-the-name-cuz it's cool, then the whole site gets corny as hell. But I'm confident we can get it tastefully done.

2) I'm not sure how much respect the name will get initially. I know I'm going to pimp the OctO abbreviation pretty hard.

OctopusOverlords.com will pick up a lot of mystified people Googling for "octopus". I foresee a lot of surreal "what the..." reactions coming soon.
