Songs that never get old

Post by Captain Caveman »

The vast majority of songs, even great ones, eventually overstay their welcome after awhile. This is a common phenomenon. Only a priviledged few have the ability to remain fresh after 25, 50 or even 100 listens. These I have dubbed "songs that never get old", and although I still do not understand what specific factors must align to produce these timeless tunes, I am always eager to discover the next song that will qualify for the list. Here is a sampling of songs that no matter how many times I hear them, never seem to get old:

Buckets of Rain - Bob Dylan
The Only Living Boy in New York - Simon & Garfunkle
Moonlight Mile - Rolling Stones
Harborcoat - REM
Houses on the Hill - Whiskeytown
New Slang - The Shins

What are some of yours?

I heard the live Wings version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" in the car the other day, that song never gets old.

Others that work for me:

Let it be-Beatles
Sprit of the Radio-Rush
Love the One You're With-Stephen Stills
Tangled up in Blue- Bob Dylan
Sugar Magnolia-Grateful Dead

Off the top of my head, I just never grow tired of I Melt With You by Modern English. Just brings a smile to my face and lots of good memories.

Right now the entire freaking Garden State soundtrack (which ironically, includes "Only Living Boy in New York." I've listened to it dozens upon dozens of times and I just never get tired of it.

Some other favorites:

"Patience" - Guns N' Roses
"Time of Your Life" - Green Day (a song which really SHOULD have gotten old by now)
"September" - Earth, Wind & Fire (damn you, Gap!)
"Hotel California" - The Eagles
"Love Me Tender" - Elvis

YK, that Garden Sate soundtrack is quite good, but most of the songs on it I have from other albums. It does serve as a gerat primer for the uninitiated, however.

As for Hotel California, I think that song got old for me sometime during early high school after hearing it thrice-daily listening to classic rock radio. It's now near the top of my "must turn the channel" list. At the very top, however, is my most loathed song of all-time: Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight".

Never grew tired of Layla and its signature instrumental riff at the end. I'm a big fan of Little Wing in all its versions.

I know there's a bunch of never-get-old songs for me, but only one that really matters (mainly because the others are 'classics' or other songs everyone knows).

Have you seen "Spanking the Monkey"? That'll skew your take on that song right there.

Nope, nor do I have any idea what you're talking about. Though I don't really have a 'take' on Buena Buena, I just think it's a damn good song.

"Spankingg the Monkey" is the first film directed by David O. Russell ("Flirting with Disaster", "3Kings", "I Heart Huckabees") that won the Sundance FIlm festival in 1994 or so. That Morphine album is featured throughout. It's a great, great flick, although a wee bit disturbing.

Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones
I love tSoM cover of that tune. If it weren't for the fact that Alice is so much better, that song would just sit on repeat.

Goin' Back to Tuscon - Supersuckers
I'm kinda partial to "She Used to be Pretty, but Now She's Pretty Fucked Up" I also believe they were the ones who did the slow country cover of Judas Priest's "Breakin' the Law".

I'd wager that there are no songs that never get old. Take your all time favorite and put it on repeat for a few hours straight and it will get old.

Oohh and I love Gimme Shelther, both the Stones and the SoM versions.

"Wish you were here", Pink Floyd.
"Copperhead Road", Steve Earle.
"Don't stand so close to me", Police.

That's among songs that get a lot of radio play even now.

Checked out the sample on Amazon, but it never made it out of the "Sand Castles Made of Sand" part of the track. That said, it sounded pretty damn good and I liked their version of Time After Time. Thanks for suggesting them!

I prefer the Stevie Ray Vaughn version of Little Wing just because I think it works better as an instrumental piece.

I have that version. Excellent piece. Just looked in the Apple Music Store and they have some versions that I never heard. I think, however, I'll amend my earlier post and say that I like Little Wing in most of its versions after hearing some samples...

Plush - Stone Temple Pilots

Tea in the Sahara - The Police

Policy of Truth - Depeche Mode
Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush

Probably a bunch more, but those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

I saw them live years ago in the Central Park Zoo, the stage was part of the seal tank. Tuck's guitar is very smooth and Patti has a great soul sound.

I'm so totally on the "Gimme Shelter" tip, alhtough there's only one version. Without Charlie Watts' snare (the very definition of "insistent").

The snare also puts "Hold On, I'm Comin'" into that class for me.

This thought also occurred to me listening to "Metal Mickey" by Suede. Bernard Butler's guitar sound never ages.
