Today seems a busy day for asshats the world over. Some black list must have gone out. My Discord and Twitch have both received hits from people trying to log into them lol. One from Vietnam one from Russia. I wonder if Putin is wanting to chat with girls in the Ukraine online?

We just returned from a week-long vacation on Cape Cod.

When a white person is very, very good or very rich, Cape Cod is where they go when they die. It is... distinctly monochrome, but it is also luxuriouly pleasant and has Provincetown for style.

This was a seven-day family reunion on my wife's side, meticulously over-engineered by one of her cousins, two years in the making. There were more than thirty guests across three generations in attendance, so it was easy to pick the good ones for spending time. The guests of honor were my MIL (now 85) and her brother (90), both of whom had a great time, and that made it worthwhile.

Still, a week is a long time for a vacation among relatives. I would have gone with four days, tops. I spent my time swimming and chatting, and some of the cousins were interested in at least Catan-level boardgaming.

I did discover, however, that being served a whole lobster gives me Cronenberg-level heebie jeebies.

The 90-year-old uncle covered most of the expenses for the week. I believe I would need a Mentat to calculate the total cost.

Oh, and I learned for the first time that the uncle was one of the principal NASA engineers responsible for Apollo Program re-entry systems.

I suppose it can be said that, in the long run, the Moon paid for my lobster.

Or a Mentos.

I love Cape Cod. We had a couple of memorable vacations there when I was young. Glad you made it back.

I'm the contrarian (surprise!) who doesn't like the Cape. Crowded, terrible traffic, touristy, expensive. Every weekend, half the population of Boston drives down there. I've been there 3-4 times and only enjoyed it once, when we stayed in a little cabin on the outer Cape and could bicycle a few miles to P-town. Did I mention the deer flies? You don't want to be anywhere near water during deer fly season.

I can see where it would be nice if you had a private compound to stay at and someone else was handling transportation and paying the bills. But beaches and the ocean are just not my scene.

I do remember the touristy areas being quite touristy, but as a somewhat distant visitor it didn't seem so bad, and I appreciate kitsch. I was also a kid so I may not have known better lol. I was actually excited by the minigolf courses.

The setting is one of the reasons I love Ghostwriter (2010), even though it was actually filmed by the Baltic Sea I believe since Polanski of course is still on the lam.

Took the kids to see “Lightyear” today. I really had no interest in it at all (I’m ‘meh’ on the Toy Story franchise in general) and only tagged along for the popcorn.

Maybe my expectations are just so low after the last few kids movies I’ve seen (Minions, that DC Super Pets thing) but I actually really enjoyed Lightyear. It was a fun sci-fi story that looked very cool and had some genuinely funny moments. It was a surprisingly enjoyable afternoon at the movies.

How do you pronounce this word?

Hyperbole.

For years I thought it was hyper-BOWL.Then I got schooled:

hy·per·bo·le | \ hī-ˈpər-bə-(ˌ)lēhttps://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hype ... e=hyperb05\

How is hyperbole pronounced—and why?

This word doesn't behave the way we expect a word that's spelled this way to behave. It begins with the prefix hyper-, which we know in words like hyperlink (and in the adjective hyper itself), but instead of having the accent, or emphasis, on the first syllable—HYE-per-link—it has the accent on the second syllable: hye-PER-buh-lee. And then there's that bole. It should sound just like the word bowl, right? Nope. Instead it's two syllables: \buh-lee\ .

So I was listening to an interview with John Carmack today and he said: hyper-BOWL. I thought maybe he knew something I didn't. No, he was wrong. Just please don't have it turn into another literally.

The wikipedia article for hyperbole has a link to an audio sample of the correct pronunciation. If you don't like how it's pronounced, blame the Greeks.

The Greek looks like it would be pronounced like 'ooper-bowl-uh', if I remember the phonetics correctly (although after 27 years, that is unlikely.)

It seems to have evolved over time, so it probably depends on which era/dialect you are talking about.
Pronunciation
  • (5th BCE Attic) IPA: /hy.per.bo.lɛ̌ː/
  • (1st CE Egyptian) IPA: /(h)y.pɛr.boˈle/
  • (4th CE Koine) IPA: /y.per.βoˈli/
  • (10th CE Byzantine) IPA: /y.per.voˈli/
  • (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA: /i.per.voˈli/

I learned 5th century Attic dialect. The y is pronunced like 'oo', and the h is barely there at all, a sort of half exhalation rather than the full letter.

According to the wiki article, the first known use as an English word was in the 15th century, so it probably derives from the Constantinopolitan version, which would account for the shift in vowel pronounciation.

Which leads us to bona fide.

bone-a-FIDE as in HIDE or bone-a-fee-day? I listened to a pronunciation widget that said bone-a-FIGH(as in high)-day, which I have not heard before.

Yes.

Latin: boh na fee day

Correct:
boh na fide (like boner fried}
and
Boh na fide ee (like boner mighty)
and
bon uh fide (first syllable like 'Don')
and
bon uh fide ee

Americans generally use the first one except for certain technical fields.

We're up to four:
National Park Service officials said rangers were called to the reservoir between Nevada and Arizona around 11 a.m. Saturday after skeletal remains were discovered at Swim Beach.

Rangers and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police dive team went to retrieve the remains.
...
On May 1, a barrel containing human remains was found near Hemenway Harbor. Police believe the remains were that of a man who died from a gunshot wound and the body was likely dumped in the mid-1970s to early 1980s.

Less than a week later, authorities say human skeletal remains were found at Calville Bay.

More recently, partial human remains were found in the Boulder Beach area on July 25.
It's almost as if people are the problem.
