Name Change

Post by Odin »

I've been thinking about making this change for a while. I'm mostly a nice guy, but sometimes I think my handle here and my Emperor Palpatine avatar shade some of the responses I get. It certainly doesn't help. When I joined GoneGold, it was after lurking for a long time. The thread that finally caught my attention enough to sign up dealt with the (at the time) forthcoming Star Wars prequel - either Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones, I can't recall. Since the subject was already on my mind, I chose a handle that reflected the topic, and I've used it ever since.

Now I think it's time for a change. I don't see an Odin on the member list, and it's a handle I've used in the way, way distant past (as far back as the early 80s on CompuServe, now that I think of it). If one of the mods or admins (I can't recall who has the necessary access) would be so kind as to make this name-change for me, I'd be much obliged.

Let the confusion begin! I suppose if Metalhed/Amish Warlord/TK-421 (I especially liked that persona, by the way) /Brian can manage it, I ought to do all right. :D

If you change your userID, does your post count and history come with you?

I'm often tempted myself.

I assume so - it's the same account, they're just changing the label for it in the database.

I dunno, though - it wouldn't be the same without our dear FeRod around. :D

They can make that sort of a change with you keeping those items along for the ride. When folks replied to you in the past or used the quote function, those posts won't include your updated name.

Staff, back in the day, encouraged (demanded?) that folks drag along some sort of notice so that the forum as a whole could associate your new ID with the old ID (see GreenGoo's signature) as this wasn't something they'd do for people who were trying to hide from a persona they had cultivated (those people have to nuke their old accounts and start anew in which case none of the posting history gets maintained).

I assume Ironrod's hypothetical change would be for marketing purposes.

No real reason except that I stopped using this nick more than 10 years ago. I am Kraken virtually everywhere else, and that handle is especially fitting for OO. In fact it's so obvious that I'm afraid somebody else will come along and use it. I'd have problems with that -- I feel proprietary toward it since naming my company Kraken Enterprises.

The only thing keeping "Ironrod" in play is inertia and continuity from GG.

You know, if you read a bit about Norse myth, Odin was quite the bastard as well...

Yeah, without question, but people aren't quite as sensitive to a character from 1000 years ago as they are to a character from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. :D

I don't like this name change thing. You build a reputation on your name and while you can't erase that reputation to most of us with a name change, you should have to stick with it.

Its like ATB on Gaming Trend, you can change your name, but you will always be ATB.
