One summer in the 1980s there were huge flocks of blackbirds in our area. Me and my friend would be walking and the light would dim and you'd hear what you thought was rain headed your way....ya fun times. We knew all the covered spots around the area to run to. It made quite the impression as I still remember it to this day.

The derecho in Iowa hit Cedar Rapids pretty hard. CR lost 70% of it's tree cover and about 50% of their trees. Right after, any tree left standing had hundreds or birds in it. If you went into one of the areas not completely destroyed by tree loss, you'd be surrounded by thousands and thousands of birds all chirping at once. It was (and still is) crazy. It's also crazy that about 25% of homes still haven't had their roofs repaired and closer to 50% haven't had siding or gutters repaired. We got shingles a year later and hope to have siding next summer. We have neighbors who still have holes in their roofs or part of the house still a gaping hole from trees. It's all kind of crazy how long it's taken.

When the tornado hit us we had tarp on the roof the next day and a new roof in a week. Siding went on the front about the same time. The tree in front was cut and moved by a roving church group in 2 days and the one in back was off the house the same as that.. Power was restrung 5 days later because we had to have our outdated meter and pole replaced first.
