We had excellent cheese fondue in Switzerland, where it was a national craze at the time. Tried making it at home with less-than-stellar results. I'll bet we still have a fondue set buried in the deepest recesses of the pantry.
We have a wonderful English pub here that serves a great Welsh rarebit!

I'm glad it's popular somewhere. Welsh rarebit doesn't exist around here unless I make it, AFAIK. I should make it.

You have to throw some sodium citrate in there.

Is sodium citrate the same as citric acid? If so, then yes please, keep that shit away from me.

None of my doctors have advised against citrates, though I don't know how much of them I get when I avoid citric acid.

Also, if so that's a shame, as I am prone to get kidney stones. Related?

sodium citrate can refer to any of the three sodium salts of citric acid.

Citrates fight kidney stones and help shrink current ones and keep new ones from forming. Theres actually a dietary supplement of a type of citrate in health stores that you can take. I should get me some.

I dope my drinking water with lemon juice to get a citrate bump in order to help avoid kidney stones. It was one of the laundry list of tips provided by the urologist I was referred to when I had my first stone.

I LOL'd at the chess game despite a piss-poor ending.

And the Big Shef was my favorite fast-food burger* back in the day. Our Burger Chef was two lots away from McD's. When it went under, BK took the spot. AFAIK they're both still there nigh on 50 years later.

*not counting the Kewpie Delux, but there was only one Kewpie's and it was a long ways away.

Our Chef is still there. When BC went under they just changed the name to The Chef. Still using the same broiler too. Same burgers just named diff.

Nope...nation wide and even Canada. Im in TN.

Burger Chef was once 2nd only to McDonalds. In 1972 BC had 1200 places and McD had 1600. Also McDonalds STOLE Burger Chef's idea for a kids meal with toy.

NM I see you said Chief

They had a burger called the Shef burger among other 'Shef' naming...The Burger Shef would probably been illegal I guess.

You need to check out the Broken Chains blog, which is (maybe was) a blog about "tracking down and eating at the surviving locations of nearly defunct restaurant chains". The guy also did a brief article on boredpanda, where he wrote "Burger Chef was once the second largest restaurant chain in the U.S. behind McDonald's, but mismanagement forced them to sell out to Hardee's parent company in 1982. The last restaurant to use the Burger Chef name stopped doing so in 1996, but a few holdouts remain today including The Chef in Cleveland, Tennessee, which still sells Burger Chef food."

The blog has a few articles about Big Shef I believe, or about former Burger Chefs.

I don't think I ever saw one of them, growing up in NJ.

I never once heard of or saw or had option to a “Burger Chef”.
I grew up outside of Chicago.

So anyone that thinks they had any relevance in the world is basically wrong and delusional. I’m sure they were nice.

Oh, man. Burger Chef had a series of 4 Star Wars posters and 4 Star Wars printed glasses before anyone else! They were everything!

I had them all, although they were lost when my parents pared down for an empty-nest relocation.

I have no memory of how the burgers tasted.

That's weird because I loved Burger Chef and their kids meal but I remember Star Wars posters and glasses being from Burger King. The Internet shows me the posters I had from Burger Chef though. Crazy.

In 1920 the ‘infant prodigy,’ who never played on Shabbos, defeated twenty ‘graybeards’ in Paris

Twenty graybeards sitting in a square played chess yesterday in Paris against a very small boy 8 years old, and he beat them all. Among the graybeards were some of the best players in France, and one at least, whose boast it is that he drew with Capablanca, the Pan-American chess champion, but all their reputation availed them nothing against a frail child with a pale, thoughtful face who moved quietly from one board to another, reducing their most skillful plans and wiles to nothingness and mating them and mating them when they least expected it.
