Ah, the forbidden book of my youth. See kids, it's important to read (especially the marked pages). I thought I was cool because my parents got it for me. They probably just thought it was another Judy "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" Blume book rather than adolescent contraband.Smoove_B wrote:Probably not of note for anyone, but Judy Bloom's Forever is $1.99 today. Back in 8th grade (when girls were still kind of icky but became considerably less so right before graduation) there was a girl that I started hanging around with and at some point she gave me a copy of this book. She specifically indicated she wanted me to read it. When I brushed it off, she said we should hang out and that she'd read it to me. I completely ignored her advances and she moved away after graduation. God, I was such an idiot and when I put the pieces together years later, I felt really bad about the whole thing.
So yeah, $1.99 -- have at it.

Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow is $1.99
I had it on my wishlist because someone here spoke so highly of it. Not sure if the others in the series are also on sale.

So...do you like books about Gladiators? He is a man of many names. Some call him the Golden One; others, the Lord of the Silver Bow. To the Dardanians, he is Prince Aeneas. But to his friends, he is Helikaon. Strong, fast, quick of mind, he is a bold warrior, hated by his enemies, feared even by his Trojan allies. For there is a darkness at the heart of the Golden One, a savagery that, once awakened, can be appeased only with blood.

Um... I guess? Never read one about gladiators per se. I do love pretty much all media "Roman" though.

I don't recall anything in that book that would seem particularly dated.Carpet_pissr wrote:I wonder if the first Freakonimics still holds up? I have the hard copy somewhere around here but never read it.

City of Stairs is still on sale for $1.99. This gets a very strong BUY recommendation from me. Great world building. Memorable and flawed anti-heroes. Just a great book.

Sweet! Thanks for pointing this out. Technically it's showing up for me as $0.99, not free, but obviously that's a fine price for all Lovecraft.
What are the most essential reads from this, do you think? I have read a couple of the classics - At the Mountains of Madness, Call of Cthulhu, and the Haunter of the Dark, but I think that's it.

Re: [Kindle] Daily e-book deals of note
I was able to get it Friday for free and thank you very much for pointing it out! Have not read any Lovecraft, but have wanted to since 30 or so years ago when I read an old "The New Defenders" comic book that had a Lovecraftian theme. Was so disappointed when I got more around that issue to discover it was only the one issue. Thought they'd do more with it.El Guapo wrote:Sweet! Thanks for pointing this out. Code Breakers Complete Books 1-4. $.99
Never heard of it, but I'll pick it up for a buck.Book Description: Code Breakers has been one of the highest rated sci fi series on Amazon for the last four years, with over a million downloads and conversion into an RPG setting. Containing all four novels of the series, this box set will delight fans of gritty post-apocalyptic fiction, with a cyberpunk flavor.
Often compared to the early works of William Gibson and Neal Stephenson, Code Breakers is a fast-paced, action-packed and thought-provoking series. Barnes has injected the world full of interesting characters, AIs, droids, and advanced tech in a post-cataclysmic setting where the very idea of freedom has to be fought for.
Join Gerry, Gabe, and Petal in this epic tale of survival, cutting edge science, and a thrill-a-minute adventure that will have you turning pages as fast as you can, as our heroes struggle for their lives, and for the future of humanity itself.
Contains four full length novels: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta with a special offer included inside (at the end of the book).

I don't know if it is any good, but they also have To The Stars and Back by the same author for $0.99. It's a 5 book set.

I've never read Lovecraft directly, but books borrowing some of his critters are a thing these days, and I've had to review three or four of them for Library Thing. So this might be nice to have, and it's only $2 today.
