Holy crap! What are the stakes here exactly? What is Jones potentially facing with all this?

But that's not her job. If that was the intent, that is the President's prerogative. There were also probably safer less pointed ways of doing it. Moreso, I acknowledged that concern earlier but we did include text specifically crafted for Taiwan in the CHIPS act. They get a piece of the action here. In any case, it was likely in her math but a lot of people in the foreign policy sector think it was a fairly reckless move that now China is capitalizing on for domestic purposes.

AP News
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones arrived at a Texas courthouse for his defamation trial
...
The plaintiffs are seeking $150 million for emotional distress, as well as reputational and punitive damages.

Reynal told jurors that his client has been punished enough, losing millions of dollars being booted off major social media platforms.

He asked them to award the plaintiffs $1.

What was the rationale behind suggesting $1? I feel like that's a dick move that can only backfire.

That's what's called "nominal damages". Essentially as a general rule you can't award a plaintiff nothing in damages if they win even if you conclude that there weren't any damages as a result of the violation. So in that situation you award the plaintiff $1. So his lawyer's not just pulling that number out of nowhere.

That's the background of USFL's infamous $3 recovery against the NFL in its antitrust case, IIRC. They won, but the damages were nominal so they got $1, but the statute they sued under required treble damages, so they got $3.

They are at this spot because Jones refused to comply with the discovery process to the point that the judge entered a default judgement against him. So he's already guilty - this is just trying to determine what the damages are going to be.

Is his lawyer trying to make an "ineffective counsel" case?

Political Randomness

Post by Zarathud »

Alex Jones refused to participate for years, while he concealed, destroyed and denied evidence. The judge found him liable, and now it’s only about the damages.

And the plaintiff’s lawyer just got enough evidence to destroy Alex Jones. And anyone who texted him.

His defense attorney has been trying to get a mistrial, and now is going to see Alex referred for perjury. Alex has been talking about the trial on air despite instructions to STFU, and the judge is holding requests for sanctions until the end. Alex has been warned multiple times for lying and telling mistruths under oath.

He’s tried to file bankruptcy then talked about it being to avoid the damages (fraud) on air. I assume the texts and emails are similarly damning.

He’s lost, going to have to pay, and get dinged for more penalties by the judge. And there are three more trials upcoming. Goddamn amateur.

Reynal, Jones' lawyer, had a paralegal transfer some files to a common Dropbox. She sent the wrong stuff. Bankston, Plaintiff's attorney, sent them an email saying "hey, this looks like privileged stuff." Reynal replied "yes, please disregard the link." The problem is, that's not the procedure. The rules require Reynal to declare in writing all the files that were privileged (and I think why). So Bankston just waited until the 10 day claw back period was up and we get yesterday's fireworks.

And solid proof Alex Jones was concealing and lying. The incompetence of Jones and his attorneys is astounding.

Too many different bits to post snippets but lets say investigations into Hunter are not over. Funny how this is popping up before elections, much like 1/6 investigations went into full swing. Perhaps they were a bit too early.

It's interesting how Trumps Executive Office was weaponized against democrats but Biden's try to stay above the fray and he gets dragged down.

I still think the soul of country was over the Supreme Court and the soul is lost. The news about Wray, the Whitehouse, and Kavanaugh will probably stick with me forever, even if we weather the storm.

This is the output of an investigation weaponized by Trump. This started back in 2018 and you can be damn sure he was targeted by Trump's political minions. They've been looking at every nook and cranny of his life for the last 4 years. Which is absurd in its own way.
