It was awe inspiring just to watch him take the guy by the shoulders and maneuver him to exactly where he needed him. It was an elaborate strategy playing out in real time, and still sounded completely natural.

Exactly. These are the same people that watch Trump debate and think he's crushing it.

I've recently been watching some evolution and/or atheist call in show videos on youtube. It's hard to be sympathetic to (these specific) theists when they don't understand even the most basic aspects of the world they live in, let alone detailed research and complex theories.

It's like your country is intentionally keeping most of its population ignorant, while training the privileged to rule and shear them.

Watching these videos...what in the actual fuck?!

They also skirt around the term 'performance.' Is giving a speech a performance? Is attending a protest a performance? Walking in a parade? What about telling your friend a joke where others can hear? High school events (if they still exist) where football players dress like cheerleaders (and vice-versa) for one day?

Anyway, it sounds like Drag Queen Science Shows are the way to go. Which sounds, by the way, awesome.

I haven’t bothered to read any of these laws/bills, but none of this can possibly be constitutional, can it? A drag show is an artistic performance. You can’t ban it under the First Amendment. This all seems incredibly stupid.

Chattanooga banned drag shows and events just the other day. Too sexual too deviant. The GOP is going to drag everyone else back to the 1950s whether they want to go or not.

Stripping is also an artistic performance, but you can't strip in public (despite, one might argue, there being zero evidence that nudity is harmful to anyone.) They're trying to equate them. Any other time (after the 1960s, but before 2023) that wouldn't have worked. But now? They may very well get away with it. If they don't like what the precedent allows, they just make new precedent.

Let's try to be realistic here - it's not like they're calling for eradication of people

"Transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely," Daily Wire host Michael Knowles says at CPAC to cheers in the middle of a straight-up eliminationist anti-trans tirade. Fuck this shit
Story from Huffington Post:
Sebastian Gorka, an alleged member of a Nazi-collaborating political order in Hungary who served as an advisor to former President Donald Trump, kicked off proceedings Friday morning from the main stage inside the Gaylord Convention Center. Democrats, he warned the crowd, are “mutilating boys and girls” and “sacrificing them on the altar of their transgender insanity.”

...

Michael Knowles, the host of ”The Michael Knowles Show” on The Daily Wire, gave a speech at CPAC that, at moments, sounded genocidal. “The problem with transgenderism is not that it’s inappropriate for children under the age of 9,” he said. “The problem with transgenderism is that it isn’t true.”

There are an estimated 1.6 million trans people in the United States. Knowles told the CPAC crowd that these people should not have a right to exist.

“If [transgenderism] is false, then for the good of society... transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely,” he said.

Eradicated. The crowd roared again.

I know you probably know, and you don't need to be told... but historians have tried to painfully warn us of how human it was for 'Hitler to get away with it'.

Everything is totally fine in Tennessee:
On Monday, the Tennessee House of Representatives passed a law that allows county clerks to refuse to marry same-sex, transgender, and mixed-race couples if they disagree with the union, The New Republic reports.

The bill, which now moves to the state Senate, reads: “a person shall not be required to solemnize a marriage if the person has an objection to solemnizing the marriage based on the person’s conscience or religious beliefs.”
Ok, how about some more details?
State Rep. Monty Fritts sponsored the bill. According to the Memphis Flyer, Fritts told the Children and Family Affairs Subcommittee Tuesday that a “big reason” he put forth the bill was to help block elder abuse.

“When you look at some of the research that we have found on this, that … young folks are trying to marry older folks to get to their financial accounts … I think there are other things that we need to do.”
WTF??!

I get that's just the fig leaf they use to cover not performing LGBTQ+ marriages, but did The Memphis Flyer think to ask the seemingly logical follow up question?

How is a County Clerk qualified to know that such abuse is happening in order to justify not performing the marriage?

The new bill not only forbids trans youth from receiving gender-affirming care, a practice that professional medical associations have deemed safe and effective for children with gender dysphoria, but takes it a step further by mandating doctors set a timeline to de-transition children already taking puberty blockers or undergoing hormone therapy.

Under the bill, teachers would not be allowed to discuss sexual orientation or gender identity with students of any age. School districts would also be required to craft policies that forbid transgender students from using the restroom tied to their gender identities.

...

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D), who is running for reelection this year, now has 10 days to either veto or sign Senate Bill 150 into law. Even if he did veto it, Kentucky’s legislature would be able to override his decision.

So what's Tennessee up to this week?
AN ACT to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 7, Chapter 51, relative to adult cabaret entertainment.
Here it clarifies that "adult cabaret performance" are "male and female impersonators" and then indicates that all adult cabaret performances must be registered for a state level permit.

This is totally normal.

Death threats are only for homosexuals, darnit!
Over the past several years, Sure Foundation Baptist Church in Spokane, Washington – and the associated New Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Movement (New IFB) – has earned a reputation for having some of the most offensive Christian pastors in the country, who regularly use slurs like “fa***t” and explicitly say they support mass shooters who kill LGBTQ+ people.

Now they’re whining about getting death threats.

Oh, I was wondering why I was getting death threats again, this morning, out of the blue. I thought, I bet Mahjer Bheta is behind this. Sure enough, after sifting through your sea of Christian hate posts, there it was. Your dog whistle of death. Who is really inciting violence?

They seriously kicked off an anti-gay agenda from within the Gaylord Convention Center.... it's like some bad 80s comedy movie with a dictator played by Leslie Neilson now isn't it.

I've found myself thinking the same thing, but then I realize the 60's existed and things were WAY worse for people of colour before the civil rights movement.

If it could be done then, it can be done again. It's a shame people are probably going to have to die again though. It's never the people who deserve it.

I'm optimistic that the march of progress always moves forward. Sometimes by only inches, and sometimes with a stiff wind in its face, but ultimately forward. Our system sometimes allows a minority viewpoint to seize control, but they *are* a minority and ultimately will not prevail.

I'd feel better about those aspects of our history if the system itself wasn't potentially breaking down. The next couple of elections are going to decide if were doing two steps forward, one step back, or the other way around.
