Blackhawk wrote: Mon May 15, 2023 10:34 am I used to love tactical games. I made an attempt to get back into them a couple of years ago, but the tactical shooter community drove me away. Every forum, every chat was like being in an extremist militia meeting. They rhetoric, the bigotry, the conspiracy theories, the Trumpisms - it was packed with it.
I feel the same way about many in those communities, but I like the tactical games so I only play solo and minimize any social contact. I have many happy hours in Door Kickers 1 & 2 and have figured out which Discord channel are useful for me and which to stay away from.

Unfortunately, unlike DK and DK2, many of these games are really tailored for coop play :(
Exactly. Most tactical games (by which - my bad - I mostly meant tactical shooters in the vein of the classic Rainbow Six/SWAT titles) are multiplayer only, or so multiplayer focused that they'd might as well be.
I knew what you meant, tactical team shooters like the R6 and SWAT, a first person experience. I should have mentioned Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint as examples of good tactical team shooters with decent AI teammates. Obviously DK and DK2 are not first person games

I have been following a game in Steam Early Access, Black One Blood Brothers, which is designed to be single player only. It has some reasonable reviews and is on sale for 50% off for the next week. Normally since it is EA I am more reluctant to grab it, but at half-off I might buy it just to support the devs and encourage them to complete it.

Actually, I would call Wildlands and Breakpoint military themed action games. They're very run-and-gun (which is fun, but it isn't the kind of games that attract the lunatic militia fringe.)

I'd offer up things like ARMA 3, Insurgency, Insurgency: Sandstorm, Squad, Zero Hour, Ground Branch, etc.

Gosh, it has been a long time since I played an ARMA game.

By the way, I'm sometimes at a loss when trying to give genre descriptions to games  as you can probably tell.

Nah, it's fine. It's one of the genres that's poorly defined to begin with, as where 'tactical shooter' stops and 'milsim' begins varies depending on who you ask (and some see them as synonymous.) The most common usage is probably that something like Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a military action game (lots of game-like mechanics, instant healing or health regen, etc.) A tactical shooter feels realistic and has realistic elements, but has compromises for gameplay (like, say, healing syringes or a single ammo pool vs keeping track of which mags you swapped when half-empty), while 'milsim' is a tactical shooter that throws everything to the wind in the name of realism.

I'd call Door Kickers a tactical strategy game, personally.

For grins, I bought that Black One Blood Brother game. It is indeed a mix of Rainbow Six (original) where you get to hunt terrorists and whatnot all by yourself, or with AI friends. I tried a lone wolf mission and failed miserably but then it's been a while since I've played shooters. :D

Apparently Amazon has cut a deal with Embracer to get the rights to make a Lord of the Rings MMO. I wonder if this will impact the existing Lord of the Rings Online MMO. I'm still more than a little bitter about how Star Wars Galaxies was shut down to make way for The Old Republic.

Amazon Is Trying To Make A Lord Of The Rings MMO Again
Just over two years since it was cancelled, Amazon is reviving its attempt to launch a Lord of the Rings MMO. This comes as Amazon Games and franchise rights holders Middle-earth Enterprises manage to come to a deal, with behind-the-scenes drama causing the last Lord of the Rings MMO to be scrapped in 2021.

The project is being led by Amazon and would be the third active MMO under its belt, joining Lost Ark and New World. Not much has been shared with the public so far, but the game will represent "the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings", perhaps retelling aspects of the original work in an MMO format.

But can it compete with all of the other MMOs that aren't coming out?

Based on the "success" of their current MMO I have high confidence in Amazon to pull this off

Heads up on a couple games I stumbled across. Both are like post apoc / zombie survival games. First is single player early access and cost money. The second is a free mmo. It gives me a Stalker vibe.

Turn-based tactical espionage game Classified: France ’44 launches this year on PC and consoles

Publisher Team17 Digital and developer Absolutely Games announced turned-based tactical espionage game Classified: France ’44 today. It is launching later this year for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and is inspired by the true story of the Jedburghs – a multi-national team of World War II Allied Special Forces who operated behind enemy lines.

The game is set during the months leading up to the Normandy landings in northern France on D-Day and features a non-linear, replayable single-player campaign. Gameplay features a high emphasis on stealth to complete missions, including a robust overwatch ability that provides more tactical options than usual compared to other turn-based shooters. When you’re not engaging in firefights, you’ll be working to gain the trust of political factions and managing your squad to create a resistance force that will decide the fate of the D-day landings.

This sounds incredible and I need it immediately. We don’t have any gameplay yet, but we do have a cinematic announcement trailer, which you can view below:

Since TF2 has screwed the pooch for me I need a 3rd game in my rotation now. A shooter with action. In my mind Im thinking returning to Far Cry 6 perhaps. Or playing through Stalker Clear Sky for the 3rd time..or maybe its the 2nd for that one. Its basically Stalker SoC with one new area and some stuff redone so it would be like my 4th time through. Or maybe something else like Remnant that I only played a little coop with my friend. Or even Outsiders.

If you are thinking of STALKER, you should check out the STALKER: Anomaly mod. It basically merges the content from all three games.

I'm going to come back to this some day, but I had trouble getting started playing on a Steamdeck. I think it was mostly control issues and I've gotten a bit better with the controls, but I was firing too many shots wildly and the ammo was too limited. I love the concept, though!

You mean this mod takes all three game maps and stories and quests and just mashes it all into one big game world?...That would be impressive. I was thinking of just running Clear Sky and using the MISERY mod but Ive read some bad stuff on it lately. And it does SO much I dont want. Maybe Ill look into this or just stick to my usual COMPLETE mod with file editing for extra weight carrying ability..if I cant carry 500 guns back to base with me it just isn't worth it :P Seriously I usually tweak it for 1000 - 2000 lbs lol. Dont like multiple trips. Dont like low ammo, and HATE not looting about everything I see.

Thought about adding Division 2 t my play list but after 6 tries at it and it not grabbing me at all I dont think Ill bother.

EDIT: Still looking for that third game to install and play along with the others. Needs to be a shooter I think. Though Id love that SS remake.

I think I know what you mean, but for the life of me I can't quite think of one . Anyone have examples? I'd love to try one of these myself as I think I've burned out of games that have economy aspects in them, such as pretty much every colony and city builder. I'm OK with games with basic economy systems like Jagged Alliance, but more than that is putting me off right now.
