Video Games Randomness - Prioritize specific game threads!

If it's a video game it goes here.

Saw a mention of this in an article, looks like an interesting take on the city builder genre:

I don't know how many of you play or have played OpenTTD, which is a free version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, but to celebrate their twentieth anniversary they have released OpenTTD 14.0, which adds a lot of new stuff. The game is free, give it a look.

I should give it a try. People raved about TTD back in the day. I never played. I tried Open TTD I don't know how many years ago (It was a lot) and the configuration and UI just weren't worth the hassle to learn the game. If it's now generations forward in time and configured to run through Steam, maybe it's better for me.

There is an extensive wiki with a tutorial and lots of references. There are also the usual places to go ask questions like reddit, Discord, Steam discussions and of course here. If folks desire it I can start a dedicated thread, just let me know.

Broken Roads ..thought Id turn you onto this little seeming gem. Irs sorta Fallout in the Outback of Australia. If you're still here then take a look at it. It has promise I think but its off to a rocky start too. Typical.

This looks fun too,

In a vibrant undersea kingdom on the verge of collapse, a hermit crab embarks on a treasure hunt to buy back his repossessed shell. The second game from AGGRO CRAB
The company is called AGGRO CRAB....and they release a 2nd crab themed game. Me thinks they are a bit crab happy.

Heres an Xbox video but its on Steam too...or will be.

New Steam game released into early access this week, sounds interesting. From PC Gamer:
Here's a tactical extraction shooter focusing on careful PvE maneuvering with—and this is the important part—no PvP. This is brilliant news if you love the idea of games like Escape from Tarkov but fail miserably in practice. Set in an alternate history Vietnam wracked by civil war, squads of up to four players complete contracts dished out by three different private military companies, with a variety of gadgets and loadouts to deliberate over. It's an Early Access game, and development will take another two years, but it looks like there's already plenty to chew on already. Oh, and it can be played solo as well.

It's at a real decent price so i took a chance. I LOVE PVE. Pkaying solo is just icing. However if there is no friendly fire I mught give multiplayer a shot.

Don't you hate it when you get an achievement or trophy for just following the main line of the story. IMO they should be reserved for doing something special or out of the ordinary.

I remember getting the platinum trophy for The Walking Dead (platinum on Playstation is what you get for finishing every other achievement.) You literally get it, and every other achievement in that game, just for playing through it.

I have nothing against achievements, I just don't ever go out of my way to get them.

Interestingly, I have asked my kids about trophies (10 and 15) and they have all said they don't really care about getting them either.

I find achievements of minor interest, like milestones showing how far you have progressed. In my current game Sweet Transit the achievements are tied to some nice artwork as well. Like my wife's relatives, they are nice but I wouldn't miss them if they were no longer around

When I'm on the PS5, they are something I need to remember to look up to see what it was that I achieved. The video snapshots don't help much.

Actually, I have to do the same thing on the PC, but then it's just a slight glance to the right to the second monitor and steam telling me what it was.

On some games I enjoy them as something like an extra set of goals - almost a set of side quests. Figuring out how to achieve them can be interesting, as can actually pulling off a tough one.

In other games I ignore them completely.

+1.

Depends on the game and the achievement. I will definitely chase an achievement on occasion, or ignore them completely.

Absolutely. If I'm having tons of fun with the minute-to-minute gameplay, I'm more likely to seek out achievements (like I'm working on getting all of the achievements for the Borderlands series right now.) But I'll ignore them if I'm ready for a game to be over and done with, or if I'm just liking it, or if they're absurd or grindy ("kill 10,000 enemies with sniper rifles without using the scope", "Finish the game on Ultra Mega Impossible with Double Hardcore enabled", etc.) Or even if they're built on an insane number of playthroughs ("Finish the game as every faction" in a Civ-like game with 15 factions.)

In other words, I'll chase them all down if doing so is going to be fun and an extra gameplay twist, but not if they're unfun.

Starting to make progress in Sifu. Made it to the second stage of the third boss on a single playthrough (i.e. dying in your 70's).

It's fun, but I still make a ton of mistakes and miss-timings etc.

Think of it as the polar opposite of this gaming gem, that mocks "button-mashing fools"… ;)

Same here. Half-Life 2 had an achievement called "Little Rocket Man" which required you to play most of the game in a different and awkward way. I found it a memorable (and annoying!) challenge.

The other reason achievements can be cool is the global stats. I like seeing how many players got the various achievements. How many people finished chapter 1, compared to how many finished the game? I bet developers like these stats too.

Other than that, I find achievements annoying. I recently played a game that popped up two achievements right as the dramatic final cutscene started playing. I was like "dude, not now." I should remember to turn off achievement pop-ups.

Trying to keep that little red-hatted bastard in a milk crate during the driving sequences... :grund:

You'll note, Gnome Chompski, that I didn't provide you with a helmet when I stuffed you in the rocket. Suck vacuum, you bastard.

Seeing how many people made it to specific points in the game or hit basic milestones is generally the only part of achievements that is interesting to me.

Tried bragging to my son about my progress, he was like "oh yeah, I made it to the last boss but I'm not a fan of how the fight worked so I never did finish it".

My understanding of his gaming was that grand strategy and minecraft-esque games were his forte and interest. I was crestfallen to learn that my progress that I was so proud of was nothing but an afterthought to him. Too funny. :D

I thought that's how achievements started as a thing in the way back machine. You unlocked an achievement in old style video games and it opens up content of some sort. Usually an income or a thing to make you better. I remember them from my console days going back to I don't know how far.

This is normally just regular game progression. You can't play chapter 2 until you have the chapter 1 achievement, etc.
