I didn't realize it started up again. Hope it's still on Comedy Central and my DVR slurped it up.

Last night was also the premier of "Kevin can f**k himself" but this ain't that thread.

Unfortunately, Adult Swim is a pain to watch if you don't have cable unless you want to subscribe to an expensive 'live' option. It is an anti-cord-cutter network. I'll wait until it's available elsewhere.

(And yes, I know the first episode is free. )

I think this latest episode is setting us up for some bigger stories:
Spoiler:
1) We get a name drop from Nimbus for Rick's wife. We now know for sure her name was Diane and apparently Nimbus knew her. I hope this leads to more on that.

2) We also got a call out to someone named Kyle at one point. The insinuation was that he might have been someone Rick traveled with before Morty. I know there actually was a minor character named Kyle back in season 2 who was a scientist in the Tinyverse that Rick invented, but I suspect that's not who they're talking about.
Other than that, my line for the week is “Were we Blades in that one? Tight.”

Hmmm...those were good catches, they happened so fast. That's my one complaint about the show is that sometimes the dialogue comes so quickly, you can miss key elements if you're not 100% dialed in.

Seasons 1-4 are on Hulu, but Season 5 isn't.

Where are you watching, and will the new stuff eventually migrate to Hulu?

I have Hulu + Live TV + Hulu DVR so I'm "recording" it from Adult Swim via Hulu as it's airing.

I have probably watched every past episode 4 or 5 times by now and i still catch new stuff sometimes. I like how it is so subtle and not blarring in your face to get the point across.

I jumped between loving and getting frustrated with episode 2 of season 5 (Mortiplicity).

Loved it because it tried to shred so many scifi tropes.

Frustrated because it tried to shred so many scifi tropes.

But seriously, it was denser than last week's episode, so it's going to take at least one more watch before I start to understand everything they tried to do in that episode.

However, it all pales in comparison to
Spoiler:
ending the show with an extended tribute to Highlander featuring a wooden Jerry realizing he's immortal while the Highlander theme plays in the background.
Also, there was a brief callout to last week's name drop on Diane in a blink and you'll miss it moment. Rick basically states "we're not going to get into it" and then the story moves on.

Even if this last episode was a 2 minute premise stretched out into an entire episode, I sure enjoyed it. But yea, that post credit ending was extra dark. :D

Maybe it's just me, but I feels like this season of R&M is heavily Justin and less Dan. It feels closer to the much more cynical and mean spirited Solar Opposites by Justin than it does previous seasons of R&M with Dan. I've always felt that Dan brings some humanity to Justin's admittedly often times funny cynicism, and that's what has kept the show from being about a cruel grandfather who is essentially a supervillain that enjoys torturing his grandson.

But this season I'm not really getting that vibe so far. I'm still enjoying it, don't get me wrong. But the formula just seems a little off.

Oh, it's still miles beyond almost any other show. Don't get me wrong. I just miss the relatively light tone of a Vat of Acid, Pickle Rick or Ricklantis Mixup episode every now and again.

Film Theory provides an intriguing hypothesis on the reason the fifth season has seemed more than a wee bit 'off' and oddly inconsistent:

Okay, Fishing for Galactus might be my favorite bit from this season.

Also, this felt like an episode with more Harmon. It was a return to form in many ways.

Yeah, that was a fun ride. As a casual viewer who didn't remember Evil Morty from S1 (if there's anything to that video), I enjoy the episodic episodes more than those with a lot of subtle callbacks for the serial fanbase. I do miss Abradolph Lincler, though.

Canon and attention to details being R&M's thing, I have a question
Spoiler:
So, if Summer makes Naruto part of the Smith family because it's the family we have. Leaving aside the fact that Morty spawned and entire race we was attached to, he let go his gazorpazorpian child. What does that do to that lost relationship? And Morty, is now absent father again and again with less long lasting attachment for his brood than Rick is often shown to have to his.

I don't know if it's just that I'm using cannabis right now, but this connects with me deeply:

They're kinda losing me. The season seemed really short with such a long gap to get to the "finale" and what was there felt like some sort of meta walking a line between being serialized and being episodic and just got too meta in trying to justify itself. I'll still be TiVoing but the magic that made me look forward to the next show or season seems to have worn thin. They are getting too clever for my own good. I like me some snobbery in my cartoons but I don't needy a group of writers fancying themselves Pynchon. I couldn't even get through Pynchon when my grades were on the line.

I'm finally caught up.

This is the only show I daren't watch sober from the effects of cannabis because it hurts too much. But it's too dense for me to properly appreciate it high. So I have to watch it stoned twice.

I still thoroughly enjoy the show. And the new season premiere was great. However, I do feel that at this point in time, I'm replaying scenes less to get a joke than I am to understand what was said/shown in regards to the huge mythology this show has built up over the course of its run. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it is less laugh out loud funny and more "wait...is that a callback to the origin of Rick's friendship with Birdman?". I guess it's only natural, considering the cerebral nature of the show, but I do miss the self contained episodes full of nothing but Rick being the worst Doc Brown grandfather in history.

I don't have the brain cycles to worry about the call backs but last night's episode needed no mythology to be awesome, though knowing everyone's personalities sure helped.
