It appears the launch has been rough, with lots of lag and crashes and "mostly negative" ratings on Steam.

I'm sure they'll fix it eventually.
From what I recall, the release of the Horizons DLC was similarly disappointing and buggy, though from what I have seen and read about the Odyssey release, it does seem to be in a significantly worse state. Frontier Developments has seemingly always had a checkered history of botched releases with each major patch. Suffice to say, I have not rushed out to purchase the Odyssey DLC, and am more than to content to hold off until the kinks are hopefully sufficiently worked out.

I pre-ordered it.

I've already downloaded it (and the first patch).

I have not yet played it; I'm waiting for the dust to settle out and for FD to clear up all the performance issues that should have been expected due to suck a quick transition from alpha to release.

I've actually been on a hiatus from ED for the last several months, after playing with few breaks since release. I've got plenty of other things to do with my diminished free time, notably MSFS and Cyberpunk. Even CK3, which I adore, has gotten scant attention from me lately. :(

I haven't fired up Elite: Dangerous in years and haven't been following the game to any extent either, so I was surprised to hear that Frontier is still actively developing new features. In a lot of ways this is sort of the polar opposite of Star Citizen -- the initial kickstarter campaign for ED was pretty low-key, but they did release the game more or less on schedule and a decade later they're still going at it (alongside a variety of other projects). I backed it at whatever level included all subsequent expansions, so I really should dust off my HOTAS and find some time to play it again. Eventually...

I used to be able to dock at a fast clip on the C64 Elite using a big red Wilco joystick. Sync up the rotation and you could blast in more quickly, without crashing. Took a lot of practice.

I was crazy about Elite back in the day. I actually went and bought a C64 after I already had my Amiga 500 just to play Elite and Autoduel, because I had no idea when or even if they'd be ported to the Amiga.

I'm not sure "still" is the right word there. For a while it seemed to me like FD had abandoned new development on the game, or at least made it a lower priority while they pursued other more interesting/profitable things.

Apparently some of those other things (IIRC Jurassic World 2, F1 Manager(s), Warhammer) did not generate the revenue that FD expected. Now they've "rediscovered" E:D and have recently started to release new content, like 4 new ships, Power Play 2, and this.

At least that's my take on it.

"Still"... "Again"... Either works, I guess.

Like I said, I haven't been following them all that closely and was surprised that more stuff is in the pipeline.

I just recently got interested in playing a space game again, so I re-installed Elite Dangerous and added the Odyssey DLC (the only DLC I didn't have before).

I last played in 2021. I was surprised to find my old character and upgraded ship still waiting for me. Is there any reason I can't just pick up from there? Will my old save perfectly adapt to a couple of years of upgrades and Odyssey?

I really want to try this in VR, but don’t really have a room setup that’s conducive to hooking a VR headset up to my gaming PC. Might need to figure that out…

What VR set do you have?
If it's a Quest variant you can go wireless.

Yeah elite has recently had a little bit more attention paid to it since Odyssey release with a big thargoid story arc and new ships. I've been only playing last 4-5 years with my dad (74) as an evening thing, but i have about 5000 hours according to Steam. he plays a lot more as he's retired. I look forward ot the next stage with system colonisation and base building. I think it could really boost it up again.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I have a Quest 3, but have never really looked into if/how to get it connected to my PC. Partly because I'm lazy, and partly because I'd have to pry it from the kid's hands to ever play it.
