GOG Connect

Post by Isgrimnur »

GOG Connect
Connect your Steam account and jumpstart your GOG.com library.
You own the games, so why buy them more than once?

To connect your library with GOG.com, sign in to your active Steam account via this page. You'll be able to import all the games listed below to your GOG.com library – assuming you own them.

The eligible games are limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers, so stay tuned for more games to come.

I don't get it. Why would someone be interested in doing this? You already have access to all your Steam games in Steam. What am I missing?

Explain.

You mean in case Steam goes under?

Wait, or does this mean the games once transferred to GOG are now completely DRM free? If so, why would Steam allow this?

Steam already has your money, and it takes agreement between 'partners', so it's not something that they're doing unilaterally.

I'm not sure that Steam and GoG even need to communicate about it. Your list of games is publicly available (unless you set it to private.) All GoG needs is permission from the developers to allow an already sold copy of the game to be added to your GoG account, then it looks at what games you have and adds those that are eligible.

It benefits GoG just through word-of-mouth and getting people to pay more attention to what they're offering.

Also, some games on GoG have extras that aren't in the steam versions (eg, soundtrack, artwork, etc).

And in some cases, gog will give you a (bigger) discount for buying a group of games together, and will include that discount if you own some of the games - so this will mean you may be able to get the discount without rebuying games you have on steam but not on gog.

Hopefully the connection between the two isn't secured by GOG in any way. Steam has a lot more protection than they do, and I'd hate to see my very precious steam account compromised because a script kiddie found a hack online that allows him to access my steam account.

You are logging into Steam via the Steam API - not through GoG itself.

It is not up to Steam.

Steam only let you share your game list to gog.com.

From that list the publishers that own the games and gog.com give you gog.com copies for the
games.

It is not all games, just games that the publishers agree to do this.

I'm not clear on the direction this is supposed to go. I linked my account but gog says I have nothing eligible, even though I own VVVVV and Saints Row 2 on Steam but not on gog.

Hmm OK just read this: NOTE: Make sure your Steam Privacy Settings & Profile Status are set to public.

Sooooooo, no. Maybe I'll set it public just long enough to sync up the games today. I sure as hell am not making my Steam acct public all the time.

ed - OK that worked. Set it to public, synced up some games, set it back to private.

Interesting concept. While it could take days, or so it said, it actually only took a minute to go thru my measly 376 Steam games and add 3 to my GOG library.

after going through all my titles, here are the ones that were added to my GOG account (there would have been more had i not owned them on GOG already):

Braid
BIT.TRIP RUNNER
Saint's Row 2
Surgeon Simulator 2013
To The Moon
Trine [Enchanted Edition]
VVVVVV

i thought for sure Super Hexagon would have been added as well. strange.

just a heads up

make sure you actually "add" them to your account after GOG lists them as found and addable

the only game I qualified for was Shadowrun .. but, yet, it wasn't listed in my account, so I tried to buy it, figuring it would say I owned it or that it was free ... NO .. it didn't

these are on a timer for adding to your acct.. make sure to follow thru before the buzzer sounds

Presumably the GOG versions are all going to be DRM-free, which may or may not be the case for the Steam versions.

It was limited time offer (about a week for each batch), the first batch expired a while ago and the second batch also expired.

Why are new additions time limited? :? Makes me not want to bother. Is there somewhere to sign up to be notified?

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg
