I thought the linked article said there was a Millenium Falcon lego set of 6,000 pieces so that would be where a lot of those pieces came from.Daehawk wrote:Ive never seen Lego parts in those shapes.

Love this thread! My boys and I are working right now on a pretty big (relatively speaking, for us) recreation of the Hoth battle. We've got the much-maligned UCS Hoth set, plus another snowspeeder, an AT-AT, a bunch of snow troopers, a Millennium Falcon, and an X-Wing. We're about two thirds done. I'll post pics when we're finished.

My 5 year old has been saving money for over a year-- allowance, odd jobs, birthday and holiday money from relatives-- and just last week had enough to purchase (at a subsidized price thanks to his parents) the set he's been lusting after since first getting into Star Wars... the Death Star. Complete with almost four thousand pieces. He's been building for a week and isn't even halfway done yet.

A ~$500 set that's recommended for 14 and up?

He paid under $300 (we paid $400... got it used from someone). But he's completed age 14+ sets by himself several times already. The instructions are wordless, and he's very good at patiently following the pictured directions step-by-step. He worked almost three hours straight yesterday.

Our 5 year old does better with LEGO instructions than the 8 year old. He can diligently, quietly piece them together 90% of the time. The older one gets into it by three steps and then claims it's impossible and quits.

My son has the giant lego-like blocks. Lately he's been assembling them into structures shaped like "[", sometimes as tall as he is. As with anything vaguely "C" shaped, he declares his creation to be Pacman.Chrisoc13 wrote:Can't wait for a couple years when my kid is old enough I have an excuse to buy lots of Legos.

Probably cost more in LEGOs than it did to build the original.

Re: LEGO projects with tons of bricks
This hit a couple delays, but we're done! It ended up taking up much more space than I thought, so it was tough to find a good place to display it. It's in the basement family room right now on a counter. I'd like to find a better space, but this gives a feel for what's there. Fun project!!Kurth wrote:Love this thread! Must be more than one giant Titanic Lego model...unless the one announce in 2016 or whatever I posted on is finally just being released.
Be king of the Lego world with record 9,090-piece Titanic set

Available on November 8, the set will cost $630 — and it does not include Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet or an iceberg.

My 12yo son is a LEGO fanatic and a Titanic fanatic. I feel like he is getting this for Christmas. Feels really hard to justify, but I feel like I am going to do it anyway. That's just too perfect.

Re: LEGO projects with tons of bricks
My kids like Lego, they generally make the set as bought, then it get is broken down, pieces lost, and at time to time they attempt using pieces for their own creations. Never as complicated as the intended, though.
They have a Lego club that has a fairly steep monthly fee that's in the area. I think it's geared for 12+ and might be worthwhile if either kid shows an inclination towards engineering (my son kind of does). It would be a better use of their time than Boy Scouts, that's for sure.

Re: LEGO projects with tons of bricks
I have a buddy who is living the adult Lego dream. He's been buying and flipping sets for years. He makes around $3500 a month on Lego sets alone.
He always winds up buying 4 or 5 of these big sets and sitting on them until they're retired. Of course he also keeps a lot of sets, and has an entire garage devoted to Lego storage and building.
He's also one of the nicest, most generous guys I know. For these really high-priced sets, he'll send them out as loaners to friends, let them build it, then pass along to the next friend. I've been able to build the big roller coaster, Hogwarts Castle, and Diagon Alley this way. Sets I'd never dream of being able to afford or build on my own.

Re: LEGO projects with tons of bricks
When I was unable to get the LEGO Titanic for my son for Christmas, generous was not what I was thinking of your friend. Nice and generous doesn't seem the fittest description for scalpers.
Anyway, I got an email this morning that it was back in stock and luckily it appears demand for the LEGO Titanic is a bit lower than for a PS5 so I was able to get my hands on one (well, order confirmed at least) in the 6 or 7 minutes it was in stock.

Yeah, Lego scalpers are about as popular on deal boards as bitcoin miners are on gaming boards.
