I never did see that one. Does it rise to the greatness of Waterworld?

The words "rise"or "greatness" are not words I would ever use alongside either of those two works.

Listen, I had three beers under my belt and Vudu had it on sale. When you're tipsy, even a Brian Herbert novel can sound like a good idea.

Jeff V wrote: Mon Nov 08, 2021 3:27 pm Some people will accept nothing less than the greatness of the original, and if that's the bar they set for personal enjoyment, I pity them, because few books will ever satisfy them. I read a lot, sometimes I read challenging books, sometimes it's brain candy. I enjoy either for different reasons.
I mean... everything I read doesn't have to be a masterpiece or anything - but I guess I'm more interested in the ideas and insights of actual authors than I am in "worlds" as such. The Duniverse is fascinating because of the ideas and concepts Frank Herbert puts into it, and the way he, as an enlightenment conservative, investigates his thoughts on what good governance is, how religion and governance plays together, the nature of consciousness and predicting the future, evolution as a larger natural law even for social development etc. etc.

I'm not intrinsically very interested in another author's take on the background of some of the characters, really.

Take the book "Nineteen eighty-four" by George Orwell. It is fascinating because of the concepts the author, an anti-stalinist democratic socialist, struggles with - what drives authoritarian tyranny, what is the object of power and how would the power-mad organize society if their only goal is power itself.

If Orwell has a kid who wrote some books detailing Winston's childhood or Julia's teenage years, I wouldn't be interested in that either. Because it's not about the world for me, it's about the concepts the author is trying to explore.

Now, I don't mean to shame you or anyone for enjoying the Brian Herbert books. I've enjoyed my share of pulp as well, in my case, Swedish gothic horror novels such as those by Nikanor Teratologen or Gunnar Blå - hardly masterpieces but fun to read for very different reasons,

Reading all 6 of the original Frank Herbert novels isn't going to give you any closure. He died before he could finish the story.
You have three options for where to end to have things tied up neatly (as they can be).

1) Read only Dune.
2) Read Dune & Dune Messiah
3) Read everything, including Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson's sequels. I don't recommend this option (the novels are not generally well regarded but they do have their fans).

I personally only read Frank's novels, so I don't have a tidy ending, but I'm fine with that.
I'm an outlier because I recommend option
2.5) Read Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and God-Emperor of Dune.

This is the full "Atreides prescience arc," where we see pretty much everything Frank Herbert has to say about heroes, religion, politics, and the possibility of controlling the future.

Yes, the fourth book is weird for one main reason:
Spoiler:
The protagonist is Paul's son, who has merged himself with the sandworm lifecycle and ruled as emperor for thousands of years.
But I think the first four books complete Herbert's dealing with all of the Big Ideas that originally animated the setting for him. What comes after all feels unfinished.

Where I lost it was Chapterhouse and Heretics are thousands of years farther still, while Brian takes the continuity thousands (2 I think?) years into the past. There's nothing in human history that leads one to find such continuity even a little plausible. The stories set in those various eras aren't necessarily bad, but one does have to check their brain before entering.

To be fair, humanity isn’t terribly old, in the scheme of things. At least the kind of humanity that would be capable of recording their history with any real proficiency. We’re barely past the “eyahhh, giant ball of light in sky is god!” stage.

i'm going to add, you're not going to get the Whole Story and probably a notion of the Exact Opposite Theme if you don't also read Dune: Messiah (even though it's a far inferior work in several aspects) for reasons already mentioned earlier in this thread

I finally watched this. I wanted to host a viewing party with some friends, but it didn't work out. I watched it yesterday with my family. It was AMAZING. And then later, I watched it again.

I'm a big fan. I used to read the first 4 books annually, back when I had more time. now its only every couple of years. I have read all the extended universe stuff multiple times, and I enjoy those also. Some people get really snobby about the Brian Herbert works, but I tell ya, I read Chapterhouse and Heretics, and those were not exactly genius level writing like the first 4.

But anyways, I am pleased with how closely it followed the plot. I don't mind the parts that were cut, and I am super glad about not adding any major non-book content . (I'm talking about you, wierding modules).

The visual of the ornathopters got me super excited.

Spoiler:
The family was surprised by how many main characters got killed in the movie. Especially Duncan, who is my favorite, and they all know it. And they are confused about how he could be my favorite, since he is in only half of half a movie. I nearly had to run out of the room to prevent spoilers.
I don't know if I can keep silent, and its really unlikely any of them are going to read the books.

Was that Crown? Come to think of it, Crown was in Niles or Skokie IIRC. They did have a bar, though.

There are several theaters in my area that serve booze throughout the movie, and food, too. The one in Naperville is pretty much like one would expect such a place to be, the one in Bolingbrook is a little more upscale, expect a dinner and movie to exceed $50/person. I liked it, but we only went once, on my b-day about 5 years ago. Don't recall what we saw.

The one in Naperville has a lobby bar too. This was invaluable when my son lost patience during Angry Birds - The Movie and I needed to remove him from the theater proper.

The Evanston 12 Cinemark. I loved that theater. I'm hoping it comes back in a way that looks like its previous incarnation.

For a while I thought that would be the future of all theaters...it just makes a lot of sense. It eliminates the excuse of watching the movie at home because I can have a beer or 4 while watching. Sadly, my local theater is not among them, and therefore watching at home is usually the most attractive option.

Nothing like having to open a soda can i na theater. Have to time it just right or CLICKSCREEEEFIZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

My wife would always carry a large purse for the movies. Snuck a whole bag of slider burgers in once. Im sure no one smelled them and wondered wtf. Last time we went to the movies was Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Our cousin went with us. Wife snuck in a bag of pork skins, a couple drinks, candy, and something else I cant recall. Paying for overpriced junk at a already expensive movie is not good. I do still sometimes get popcorn and a icee like drink.

Miss those days.

The worst is anything aerosol/under pressure. There was a guy sitting three seats down from me at a theater once who brought spray on butter with him for his popcorn. I didn't even know people did that, for christ's sake. But about every 10 minutes, I'd hear this loud "FFFFSSSSHHHH" and I'd look over and see him staring right back at me as if saying, "Oh, I'm going to butter...and I'm going to butter loud and long, sucker!".

Audio-visually, this is the most impressive mainstream film I've seen in a long time. Blade Runner 2049 (and Arrival too) was probably the last time I was this impressed, and they of course share the same director. Visually, this film is art. Together with Zimmer's score it does an amazing job of evoking the weird and otherworldly. It's been a long time since Zimmer's surprised me... his score gets a little bombastic at times, but it suits the subject.

Plot-wise, it's Dune. I don't think I ever finished the book, but I've seen the other adaptations and remember liking the Sci-Fi channel miniseries a lot. Would someone completely new to the series understand what the hell's going on? I have no idea. I think the film does suffer from Part One syndrome. That and just needing more time to tell the story. But it's so damn gorgeous I don't care. The cast is overloaded with talent; I think everyone does a great job, but there's just not enough time for most of them to shine, even in a film of this length. I'm not 100% sold on the young leads, but they're good enough. They seem like they were picked for their attractiveness first. But then, I've hated young actors since I was young myself, so I'm not objective.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Florence Pugh is in negotiations to play Princess Irulan. Good choice IMO.

It also means the Emperor will be Caucasian (sorry Idris Elba fans).

This is complete fan-casting from my side, but I'd love for Matthew Goode to play the Emperor. They're probably going to pick a bigger name, though.
