My memories of seeing the 1984 version... It was my first THX film. I hadn't read the book either. I saw it with my mom, who kept leaning over to ask me what was going on... :D

Ha! I wish!

Though I'm not sure that it would have helped with the plot. :)

Movie theater staff gave them to you with your ticket. I had a couple of copies in my high-school desk until my parents downsized and trashed all that.

i've come around to Lynch's _Dune_ - especially with De Laurentiis as executive producer, how could it be otherwise? starting to feel Villeneuve's version is a little too serious and needs a bit more Jodorowsky.

I...may actually get one of those.

Archinerd, Zarathud and Seppe will just have to deal with the embarrassment of sitting next to me while I hold that aloft and make worm sounds throughout the film.

There's a reason DUNE calls them "thumpers"...

I might still have one from Apocalypse Now in a box somewhere.

I probably mentioned this before (several times), when I saw Lynch's Dune, I was one of 4 friends. Two of us read the book and couldn't believe how bad the movie was. The other two couldn't follow it well enough to decide if it was good or bad.

I have no shame. I fully expect hepcat to misbehave, and to participate in the silliness.

I learned the Dune story from a coloring book and the classic Avalon Hill board game gifted to me by my fun Aunt. She was dating a guy who was into sci-fi literature at the time.

I sw the trailer for the next movie yesterday. I got properly excited. And then I had to go back and make sure if it was this March or next March, because time has no meaning anymore.

bought tickets for Thursday, Feb 29 at 3pm at SIFF Downtown (formerly Cinerama) in Seattle.. i realize pretty much _no one else_ i know will be able to make this showing, but it's the very first one and it still had decent seats available.

It’s “I WIIILLL KIIIILLL HIM!” He doesn’t elongate “HIM”. That would just be silly.

I should probably just call you and demonstrate. What’s your number?

I'm not familiar with anything Dune-related, but watched the first one on a flight last week. I liked it...I think. It was rather confusing and I admit I got a bit lost in all the flash-forwards/flash-backs. But the spectacle of it all certainly cannot be denied.

I enjoyed it enough to probably watch the sequel when it comes to streaming at some point.

I watched Dune pt. 1 recently. I quite liked the first half, but was bored by the second half.

It's generally faithful to the book, but there are lots of little changes that I wish it hadn't made, like
Spoiler:
- Omitting the dinner scene
- Omitting where Jessica confronts a drunken Duncan
- Baron Harkonnen flipping on his shield just before being exposed to the toxin. I liked it more in the book that he already had his shield on at the lowest setting and just forgot about it.
I'll watch Part 2, it should be more entertaining.

Sting must have felt really awkward thinking, “I really want to move but this bloke is sleeping on my shoulder. Shite, is he drooling on me?!?”

Interesting points, but movies have to be much more economical with time than novels:

1) The dinner scene (one of my favorites!) would probably take at least ten minutes. I think most of the plot/world-making that matters there is established in the much shorter (and invented by Villeneuve) scene where Paul encounters the gardener irrigating date palms. That's probably why the latter exists.

2) Likewise, Jessica and drunken Duncan would require a whole subplot where Duncan and Thufir suspect Jessica of treason. That would require several scenes and maybe another 15+ minutes, and all of it is moot after the Harkonnen attack anyway.

3) I'm not sure this matters much. The Baron's vulnerability right up until the key moment is probably more dramatic.

I saw this in the theater over the weekend (it was re-released to promote the upcoming sequel). It's such a unique blend of epic and weird, and I'm glad that I dragged along my kid (he had no interest the first time around).

Right after the credits, they showed a scene from Dune 2. No spoilers, but it was very well done. I can't wait for it to come out.

I can't wait.

TMI:
Spoiler:
This Super Bowl Sunday, we made a bunch of food that was all oriented a little too spicy for my IBS. My wife wasn't sure if I wanted to endure the cost of eating such foods - and I told her, "the spice must flow".
Then I had to explain it to her.

Went to the new(ish) Alamo Drafthouse in Boston with my 11 YO son to see Part 1 (again, for me), ahead of the sequel coming out next month. Still a great movie with the right mix of Dune weird. Plus the Alamo Drafthouse was fun, and glad to finally get to check it out.

Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen's Gambit, Menu, The VVitch, and soon to be Furiosa) made a surprise appearance among the cast at the European premiere of Dune 2.

It's now confirmed that she plays Paul's sister Alia. Presumably she appears in some sort of vision of the future, as Alia is basically still a toddler at the end of the novel.
