The Wrap
But if the show ever moves past the story laid out in the books like “Game of Thrones” did, Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich says fans should definitely not expect it to mine the games for material.

“Extreme long vision is no, we will not start adapting the games,” Hissrich told TheWrap during a press round table at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. “I can only attack one season at a time, I’m so excited for this one, the rest kind of makes my mind explode right now. If someone says ‘what happens in Season 7,’ sure I have thoughts. Fingers crossed, we get there.”

The games, in case you’re not familiar, are a trilogy of stories that serves as a sequel to the books, picking up where they end and continuing the story of Geralt of Rivia, a famed monster hunter who keeps getting caught up in lots of major world events.

Cast compared to game characters. Still not sure as Id figure most would know the game characters and not the book. I never heard of the books before the game.

Actual conversation, discussing why the characters and locations in Lord of the Rings online looked different from the movie versions.

Him: "I really loved the Lord of the Rings movies, but I don't know why everything looks different."
Me: "Have you read the books?"
Him: "I don't like novelizations of movies."
Me: "..."

I just talked to my sister about this.
Sis: Did you see the trailer for The Witcher?

Me: I did! Looks cool. I hear it's based on the books.

Sis: Oh, yeah. I read the books.

Me: The trailer really seems to reference the games in cool ways.

Sis: Um ... there are games?

Which is funny because I wager a majority of the people who have gotten into the books have been via the games, alhough it could also be true a whole new audience will view the series and want to play the games.

Yeah, my sis is an outlier who got into the books through RenFaire culture.

Yeah, come to think of it, I have a friend who may have discovered it the same way. But I have to wonder just how widespread learning about it that way would be.

The Witcher Showrunner Has Seven Seasons of Story Planned
Talking to SFX magazine for issue 320 (via PCGamesN), Hissrich said “I’ve [mapped out stories] for seven seasons. Right now it’s just about, ‘how do you set up stories that really capture audiences for years at a time?'”

“The worst thing we could do is put all of our energies just into season one, and not be thinking about where these characters can grow to,” she added.

Season 2 to start filming in early 2020:
A full month out from the debut of the highly-anticipated TV series adaptation of acclaimed fantasy novel series “The Witcher” and Netflix has officially greenlit the series for a second season.

Like the first it will run for eight episodes and is set to begin production in London early 2020 with plans for a Fall 2021 premiere on the streaming service. Schmidt Hissrich will again serve as executive producer and showrunner.
That's encouraging. I would take this to mean they were pleased with what they've seen, enough to keep the production ball rolling. I'm also going to guess it's partially because because Yennefer is a featured character and not Triss.

I will say that is very nice of the Netflix folks to schedule this release for the first day of my christmas va(stay)cation.

Did someone, somewhere, summon a djinn to then wish for all 8 chapter titles? Here you go. Now does anyone know a doctor to check Jaskier's vitals?

This looks surprisingly good, but I'm going to be real disappointed if there's no sex-on-a-stuffed-unicorn scene.

I will watch it and (hopefully) love it, but I think we should all be ready for the knee-jerk media reaction that it's just a Game of Thrones rip-off.

I'm glad they've already renewed for season 2. It may be the kind of show that could use the first season to set things up and have a slow payoff. Or they could get right to the wooden unicorn sex scenes.

What's hilarious is that like half the people reading along have no idea what you're talking about because they choose poorly and went with Triss.

I chose well and went with Triss, but that choice happened after the unicorn. :D
