Worldbuilders [Holiday Charity] [Pat Rothfuss] [Nerdery]

Post by Zaxxon »

Every year, Pat Rothfuss runs a fundraiser via his charity Worldbuilders supporting Heifer International. They raise funds to provide livestock, food, etc to help impoverished folks get on their feet and stay there.

They actually do it twice a year--once in the summer and once during the holidays. This year they are shooting for a million bucks, in large part due to an anonymous donor who's pledged $285k if they hit $715k on their own.

That's the feel-good part. Now for the OO nerdery part--over the years this tradition has been running, it's gotten more and more attention from the folks in the world who make geekish things. Each $10 you donate, you get a chance to win something cool. And this year the breadth and depth of cool things is ridiculous. From unique books, to a JoCo Cruise cabin, to a Wyrmwood gaming table, it's neato.

If you're looking to spread some holiday cheer, consider donating.

I wish Rothfuss would just write the third part of the Kingkiller Chronicles.

Ran into Rothfus at GenCon a few years ago -- about four times. Guy was having a ball and had a booth for the charity. Nice guy seemed to be perpetually surrounded by nerds or ladies.

The 2018 edition of The Worldbuilders fundraiser is up. Still waiting on Rothfuss's usually-epic intro blog post, but his freakout post is already there.

I done did donate.

This is still a thing. He's streaming Minecraft on Twitch for the current fundraiser.

That Minecraft must be super addictive if he only wrote one chapter in 10 years.

You might be on to something. Minecraft was originally released 10 years ago.

One GenCon I kept running into Patrick Rothfuss. He was always smiling and had a large number of young women around when he wasn’t near the RPG tables. Many of them were talking to nerds raising money at his Worldbuilder booth. He’s having too much fun to write, I think.

He's an interesting dude. He comes on the JoCo cruise most years, and does seem to have a retinue of young women around him there as well. He's pretty fascinating to talk to or hear speak.

Just a quick bump for anyone that wants to catch the big stream, which is starting now.

Don't have Twitch or whatever the f it is. I suppose the DoS prologue will show up on You Tube.

Thanks, bro.

Edit: Looks like I missed the prologue. I have no idea what 90% of the Q & A is about, and I'm not about to re-read the books to get a clue. Besides, after 10+ years they are buried in my garage somewhere. I just want to know what's in that goddamn chest (though I'm sure it will be a letdown).

I got to what I think is the beginning of the stream. But his pace is like a glacier pre-global warming. I will leave it on in the background while playing some games.

Edit: Prologue was totally not worth waiting for. Makes me wonder why I thought his writing was so great. I have a feeling this may turn out like Duke Nukem Forever.

As I suspected, the prologue and Q&A are now on You Tube if you are tired of watching paint dry.
