[HBO] Barry

Elevator pitch: Hitman goes to LA for a contract, trails his target into an acting class (taught by the Fonz), and gets the acting bug.

Anyone else watching this?

I thought the first two episodes were pretty good, but last night really nailed it. And Henry Winkler is great.

Definitely has an Elmore Leonard vibe.

I haven't watched last night's yet but I really enjoyed the first two.

Watching Silicon Valley then Barry back to back is quite the study in contrasts in comedy.

Heh, at first I thought this was going to be a movie about Obama, because there is one on Netflix about him with that title.

I thought it was about Bonds...

This sunday is the season's final episode, so thought I would bump this thread and say how awesome this short series has been. Defiantly the surprise hit of the season for me. Highly recommend, just wish it wasn't so short (8 30-minute episodes total).

I'm bummed that Silicon Valley is only 8 eps this season as well. Too short.

I was surprised that this thread hasn't been active with the second season underway right now on HBO.

Is anybody else enjoying this as much as I am?

I am! The last episode was fantastic. In fact, I think this season has been consistently funnier than last season so far. And I really liked last season!

Just discovered Barry a few weeks ago and binged through season 1. Last night's episode was crazy and exactly what I needed after Game of Thrones. I'm not sure which season I prefer but this season needs a little more NoHo Hank.

Based on the preview it iooks like he's back next week.

Just discovered this (since my HBO sub will be active a few more weeks) and I'm really impressed with how awesome this show is. Absolutely fantastic. I'm bumping on the off chance others have missed it and they're burning time after cancelling GoT or holding on a bit longer to watch the Deadwood movie later this week.

I binged season 1 just before season 2 started and really enjoyed it, season 2 didn't disappoint at all. Noho Hank deserves his own show!

He was supposed to die in the pilot episode, but they realized that he was the funniest guy on the show. Loved him in Gotham too.

That was a good decision.

I don't think season 2 finished as strong as Season 1 - but that might be because the Season 1 finale was so great. Still, I'm anxious to see what happens next.

I feel like S2 EP5 (where we meet Ronny) was worth the entire second season happening. That was easily on the same level as Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul in terms of writing - and it was only half the length!

Late to the party, but I’m hooked on this show now. Hader is amazing. The comedy is almost Coen brothers level at times. So much to like.

Good news/ bad news sort of thing - the lockdowns hit just as they were about to start filming Season 3.

So they went and and wrote Season 4 while waiting

Damn...what other shows are coming up on HBO that I can't miss? I want to catch up on everything if I have to subscribe for a month.

When is that supposed to start? And HBO will drag it out an episode a week probably, so I'd have to wait until it's over before I can try to get it on a free trial or something.

Not sure if I'm the only one watching (first two episodes have aired), but man...this show just turned real dark. I mean, it was already dark but these first two episodes. Barry...is in a bad spot.

I've only watched the first episode of the season so far. But man. Barry...I feel for you bud.

Argh, I keep forgetting this is back! Tonight....I promise!

Edit: okay, best line of the first two episodes has to be
I like your intensity. You’ve got a sort of not present Joaquin Phoenix thing going.

Edit 2: good lord, just give all the awards to Hader. He’s doing Breaking Bad level acting in this.

How did I miss this all along? I just started watching and I'm up to s1e6.

I love Bill Hader, but I never expected him to be soooo good in a straight role rather than comedy.

NoHo Hank is everything.

I need to go back and rewatch the last few episodes of season 2 as I completely forgot how the dynamic between Barry and his girlfriend played out, and now I'm a little confused as to their interactions.

And yes, NoHo is friggin' hilarious. I'm glad they saw that and kept him on, writing larger parts as they went.

I'm into s2e4 and I still can't believe how strong this show is.

All of the main characters are flawed people, but not in a cartoonish ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT way. It's just embarrassing to watch everyone trying and failing to be good.

My only complaint so far with season 3 is that it seems far more bleak and painful than the first two. But that's on me. My expectations shouldn't dictate the direction of the show. The writing is still very strong and I'm still amazed at how great Hader is.

How is The Fonz holding up?

In a future time when a free week of HBO comes to pass, I'll catch up on this.

Last night's episode (710N) was insane. Not ronny/lily insane, but a close second.

It was a little too perfect - felt like a plausible conversation.

Not sure where they're going after this last episode ("candy assess") but there were some...significant developments in the plot. Still have no idea what they're doing with Sally or NoHo Hank. I do kinda wish he opened up that pastry franchise.

Tech Support: Well, it sounds like things are working now.

I'm still chuckling over that one.

I'm a bit behind but catching up this week.

I just finished S3E2 and you were not kidding. The comedy is taking a seat all the way in the back and focusing on the dark. I'm totally digging it too.

It still has some laugh out loud moments though.
Spoiler:
Barry's psychological warfare scheme of replacing a victim's furniture periodically with smaller furniture to make them think they're shrinking is hilariously overly complicated.

I thought the visual gag of the couple breaking up because she has too many dogs while we see Cusenau in their backyard running away from 1, then 5, then 20+ dogs was a riot.
