Yes, they've been doing a good job of playing with visuals. The car conversation from this week's episode (with Fuches) and the way it ended was hilarious.

One thing I didn't pick up on was the commentary about Sally's show and how the streaming algorithm said if a show has someone eating dessert within the first two minutes of the episode it will be a hit.
Spoiler:
The first episode of the season had Barry eating a donut while the two guys were arguing in the grave
Maybe next year, maybe no go

I’m beginning to suspect this season is mostly in Barry’s head. There’s some really odd things happening that are even too surreal/out of the blue for this show.

The most recent episode definitely had bits that took place in Barry's head but I think the rest is real life - or at least real-Barry-life in a world where Ronny/Lilly exist.

I love this show so much. The chase in 710N was incredible and I really dig the decision to have no soundtrack but just focus on the sounds of the bike. The sound design in the lane-splitting sequence should win someone an Emmy.

The one scene that made me think this, oddly enough, was
Spoiler:
When Barry pulled the dirt bike up to the car dealership and the salesman was going through his car sales pitch...only to start randomly talking about how he was having an affair. It was just so weird that it made me think that things aren't really what we believe them to be this season.

It would actually be a perfect ending to the series. It wraps up almost everything, in a way. But I know a season 4 is coming, so I’m curious where they’ll go now.

Also, as I’m watching Hader giving such a masterful performance, I have to remind myself this is the same guy who played Stefon on SNL
Spoiler:

These always made me laugh because supposedly John Mulaney would insert jokes Hader hadn't seen right before they'd shoot these, that's why Hader's always cracking up while doing the bit.

The final season starts on 4/16/23

Don't even think about watching that trailer if you're not current on the series.

I think I just saw the first season or two. Haven't had HBO in a while, and these days do not have time to binge a series.

Best show on TV. I'm a little sad it's the last season but 4 seasons is probably plenty.

So...uh, yeah. Barry is back and that was one hell of a two-episode premiere. Not going to spoiler anything, just an informal bump if you didn't realize S4 started last night.

Also, NoHo Hank's fashion choice this week is off the charts. He's genuinely one of my favorite characters ever.

I just wish the actor playing NoHo (Anthony Carrigan) would get bigger parts outside Barry, damn it. He's still doing small roles in mostly tv and direct to video stuff. The man is a talent, people!

This should be enough to convince anyone that Barry is great.

(season 3, episode 4....mild spoilers)
Spoiler:
Warning: the show starts off as a full on comedy, for the most part. But as it goes on it adds Breaking Bad levels of drama and tragedy. That doesn't replace the comedy, mind you. It just adds a lot of pathos to said comedy. And depth. A buttload of depth.

Oh hey,
Spoiler:
A Guillermo Del Toro cameo. Neat!

Also, I couldn’t stop laughing at the faces Fred Armisen kept making. It was just such a weird scene.

Oh, and the opening few minutes had me laughing too.

Great episode all around.

:D

Regarding that scene with Fred
Spoiler:
It didn't click until afterwards that the exploding gun/pen was really just a gadget that failed - the entire podcast conversation NoHo Hank had. Between that and the computer being tossed in the pool during the break-in scene while Gene was confronting the wife, the editing/writing was quite sharp. The whole jail exchange with the FBI agents was like a dark SNL skit premise. Oh, and the trunk washing scene. No words, no details, just standing there rinsing out his trunk after the reporter had visited. Great stuff.

Also from the "wow that's an awesome little detail I never noticed until the Internet pointed it out" department...
Spoiler:
In the first episode this season Sally is on a plane and "sees" Shane in the seat in front of her, the guy she killed last season.

In episode 3, while she's teaching her class it frequently cuts to a shot of her students sitting in the audience. After belittling her one student to get a reaction out of her the class confronts Sally about it. Sally looks shaken and tells the group to take a break.

After that line, it cuts again to her students and Shane is there, sitting down and staring at Sally. They don't focus on him, show Sally freaking out or acknowledge it in any way, but suddenly he's there.

Good God almighty, this was a dark episode.
Spoiler:
The camera following Cristobal down under the sand as he suffocates is pure nightmare fuel.

However, I did laugh out loud at the Dave and Buster raid. Especially the cop on the radio announcing that the only thing they found were ”a bunch of Chargers fans…and one guy in a Houston Oilers hat..which is confusing.”

If
Spoiler:
they really are jumping ahead about 13 years or so, I suspect the series is going to end with the aftermath of the two deaths we saw. Hank is going to be a different man after Cristobal’s death, but Gene killing his own son is going to be a huge thing. I suspect he’ll be gunning for Barry.

I don't think they're in witness protection. I think they're on the run. Barry broke out of prison and, from what anyone could tell, helped kill a ton of federal agents. I don't think he'd get any sort of deal in those circumstances.

Definitely not witness protection. They're hiding out.

My thoughts on latest episode
Spoiler:
I called it on Gene. He's back and he's out for blood. But he's using the only weapon he knows: acting. His goal is most likely to draw Barry out of hiding so he can get him killed/caught for what happened to his son. And as we saw in the final minutes of this episode, Barry has bit on the bait.

Barry's embracing religion seems out of place. Was he prone to that before? I know he would fall for self help stuff, so is this just an extension of his inherent need for a belief that he can be better?

Sally's encounter with Bevel was....interesting. It shows just how broken she is.

I can't wait to see what's happened to Hank.

The back story for Larry Chowder the Magical Boy (a show heavily advertised in the final minutes of this episode) cracks me up. Apparently, a gaffer on the show used to tell a story to the crew about working in a video store years ago. One day, a woman came in asking for a copy of Larry Chowder: The Magical Boy, which they eventually figured out was her mistaken interpretation of the Harry Potter films. They thought it was so funny, they made it into an easter egg in Barry.

Spoiler:
NoHo drooling over one of the bad ass killers was comedy gold.

As for the Wahlberg shoutout, it just served as yet another reminder to me that Cousineau is really the villain of this show.
