JetFred wrote: Fri Sep 10, 2021 10:17 pm But anyway, the point is...why do I make sure to claim every free Epic game? I've never installed a game from my Epic collection.
I have only played a couple of specific ones that came free on Epic (possibly only one - World War Z.) Likewise the PS+ collection, and I don't think I've every played a game from the Prime gaming giveaways. But I still claim every last one of them, even those that don't look good or genres I don't play. Why bother?

Because they're free, and I don't know what tomorrow holds. Genres I was obsessed with 20 years ago I haven't touched in a decade. Likewise, there are topics that bored me years ago that fascinate me now. Five years from now? Who knows - maybe I'll discover an interest in racing or golf, or suddenly find a love for pixel graphics or roguelikes. And when I do, I'll have a library of them waiting for me, ready to go. It's not likely enough that I'll invest in them, but click the button to claim the freebie? Hell yes.

Aven Colony looks pretty interesting, but the reviews are...not kind.

Still, will give it a look for free.

Yep. This is one of those situations where BH and I disagree (maybe). Or it at least relates to the recent discussion we had about game ratings.

In this case, the game is free. It's in a genre that I typically enjoy. In fact it's one of my favorite genres. BUT, the reviews as you said, are pretty terrible. Because they are so terrible, I won't even claim this one. Why not? Because I have at least 5 VERY GOOD to AMAZING (rated) games in this very genre, that remain unplayed. It's highly unlikely that I will get to all of those, and play them to the point of boredom. So why even add something like this that is pretty roundly criticized as being not amazing?

Even if one day I did find that I played the umpteem other "good to amazing" city builders currently in my backlog to exhaustion, by that time, I can assure you that I will have acquired at least one new one in the same genre.

whereas i don't have much interest in this genre, but now i feel compelled to play it just to see _why_ the reviews are not so good

Partially. First, there are other city builders, but the aesthetic is particularly appealing to me. "Clean sci-fi" is a look I love, far more than '21st century' or 'industrial revolution' ever has. Second, reviews of four year old games don't generally tell the whole story. A quick check shows at last 16 updates and three content updates since release. It may be a great game now - or it may still be crap. There have been plenty of games that were released to awful reviews that turned out great (No Man's Sky stands out as a prime example - it has a 61 on Metacritic, despite having been patched into a really good game that Steam says I have 146 hours in.)

The poor reviews would influence my choice to play it, or at least make me dig deeper if it looked like exactly the kind of game I was in the mood for. But I'd still claim it. It doesn't cost me anything to do so.

But again, I prefer a vast library of choices over a collection carefully cultivated by a third party.

Borderlands 2's original Tiny Tina DLC is now a free standalone game on the Epic Store
The Borderlands loot-shooter spinoff Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is set to launch on March 25, 2022. That's still a good way off, but you can get to know the character right now by way of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-shot Adventure, which is now available—and free for the week—on the Epic Games Store.

Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep was originally released in June 2013 as the fourth DLC campaign for Borderlands 2, in which players choose one of six unique Vault Hunters and "jump into chaotic fantasy battles." Unlike conventional Borderlands games, you see, Assault on Dragon Keep is a sort of meta-adventure set in a magical RPG realm: Tina Tiny is the GM, and it's up to you and your friends to rescue the queen and save the kingdom.

Aside from that, though, it's pretty much straight-ahead Borderlands: Shoot lots of weirdos, swipe lots of loot. But the changeup works well for it. PC Gamer's print review (via Metacritic) awarded it an 86% score, saying that "it's the best add-on so far, playing to all the series' strengths."

The One-shot Adventure edition is a standalone version of the expansion that serves as a sort of prelude to the upcoming Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, which will be built around the same sort of D&D-Borderlands mashup but on a much larger scale.

Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-shot Adventure is free on the Epic Games Store until 11 am ET on November 16—that's one week from today. After that, the price will go up to $10.

As someone who bought this almost a decade ago but hasn't played it yet, I demand a refund! You're all unworthy.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Bought what? Are you confusing the Tiny Tina DLC for Borderlands 2 with this? It's completely different. It's a teaser(?)/demo(?) for the new stand-alone Tiny Tina game (which I assume will be running in some variant of the Borderlands 3 engine).

Never mind. I'm the idiot. I skimmed it and completely missed the frakkin' title of the article.

'Never Alone' has got to win the award for "Game Most Often Given Away" amiright?

That thing is EVERYwhere - all platforms. I probably own 4 copies and all its dlc or follow-ups. With all that coverage, you might suspect I love the game, played it even?
