Eligible? Does that mean they won't get no-cost vaccine or they won't be allowed to get the vaccine? I can see the former, and I can see a way they can still be vaccinated but the latter seems impossible.

They aren't being considered as part of the state's plan; they don't exist because they're non-citizens and so they cannot obtain a vaccination. But I guess they're also going to be told to show up to work. You'd think the employers would not be happy about this as they're going to have plants with workers in a mixed immunity status.
Meatpacking workers are slated to receive the vaccination in Phase 1B, after first responders, utility workers, and educators, among others. The state was in Phase 1A as of Monday morning, with more than 36,000 doses having been administered to frontline healthcare workers and residents and staff of long-term care facilities.

If I were a billionaire I'd pay each and every one of those workers to stay home until that policy were reversed.

If I remember high school history correctly, you don't get to be a billionaire (or any sort of ~aire) by treating your workers with respect and doing the right thing.

Would probably be cheaper and more effective to buy them all a vaccine.

On the plus side, I would imagine most or all of the members that are vulnerable have probably already gotten one dose of the vaccine, so any spike will hopefully be lesser than it otherwise would have been.

But those GOP members are still assholes.

14 days to vaccine's full efficacy. 14 days after the second administration, that is.

Yes, but there's something like 60%(?) efficacy after the first shot, IIRC, and I think they got it about a couple of weeks ago. While not great, I don't think it's ad bad as it could have been.

China places 11m under lockdown after outbreak in northern city
China has placed 11 million people in the northern city of Shijiazhuang under lockdown after more than 100 new Covid cases were confirmed there.

Residents are banned from leaving the city and schools have also been closed.

More than 5,000 testing sites have been set up so every resident can be tested.

The new figures are the highest China has seen in more than five months. The country has been able to contain such outbreaks by immediately taking tough action.

This has involved consistently using mass testing when new clusters of cases appear, even if they seem relatively small.

Hebei province, where Shijiazhuang is located, reported 120 new cases on Thursday and all but one of those infections was in the city. Elsewhere in the country, 22 new cases were confirmed.

My area (Greenville) made it in a federal report!
The most recent White House COVID-19 Task Force report shows the Greenville area and Spartanburg are among the hardest hit by coronavirus in the country.

The report ranks Greenville and Spartanburg with metro areas like Provo, Utah, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, among the mid-sized areas with the most cases per 100,000 people, highest percent positive rates and worst case trends over the last eight weeks.

The Greenville area includes Anderson and Mauldin for these measures.

Per the report, the Greenville area had 787 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days from Dec. 31 to Jan. 6. It is higher than any figure for the metro areas with between 250,000 and 1 million people.

Only Provo, Utah, had a higher percent positive in that time than Greenville.

Spartanburg was fifth on the list for the most cases per 100,000 people in this group of cities.

Cases per 100,000 people for cities with between 250,000 and 1 million people, according to White House COVID-19 Task Force report for Dec. 31 to Jan. 6:
Greenville: 787
Provo, Utah: 778
Evansville, Indiana: 757
Chattanooga, Tennessee: 676
Spartanburg: 674
Pensacola, Florida: 638
Ogden, Utah: 611
Tulsa, Oklahoma: 596
Knoxville, Tennessee: 586
Augusta, Georgia: 580

Percent Positive for those cities during that time:
Provo: 32.7%
Greenville: 31.3%
Tulsa: 29%
Spartanburg: 28.9%
Augusta: 25.3%
Evansville: 24.9%
Knoxville: 24.8%
Ogden: 24.3%
Chattanooga: 23.3%
Pensacola: 19.3%

The report was published Thursday.

NEW: Speaker Pelosi implementing FINES for members who don't wear a mask on the House floor

$500 fine for first offense.

$2,500 for second office.

Fines will be deducted from Member pay (no use of campaign funds or MRA for fines).
About time. First offense is fine; second one should be more. I would also volunteer my time to make them attend a course I would create that they'd need to sit through. Pain.

It depends on whose numbers you believe are most reliable. The Johns Hopkins tracker currently says 380,361. The WorldOMeters tracker currently says 389,599.

Looking at Statista.com looks like we are 3rd per capita by state in COVID deaths, while being far lower (~37th by state per capita) in cases. Curious why that would be, especially when it seems like mask compliance and general safety precautions here are better than what I hear about most other states.

I'm pretty sure that some of the discrepancy is due to the fact that they run on different time zones. They each have a slightly different 24-hour period.

My initial thoughts for more deaths for fewer cases would be due to demographics:
-more elderly,
-more susceptible race,
-more susceptible health condition (weight, immunocompromised, heart health, etc.), and/or
-fewer hospital openings

Also higher levels of healthcare inequity. Usually, though not always, economic.

Johns Hopkins seems to have been consistently reporting lower US numbers than WorldOMeters for as long as I've been paying attention. I suspect that it's due to some combination of reporting lag and differing inputs, but I've never really tried to confirm that. At any rate, for the big picture I'm generally more interested in the slope of the graphs than the specific day-to-day numbers, and there isn't any significant difference in any of the sources when it comes to that.
