If you're nominating the 1996 remake of the 1939 film, then I'm nominating the 1939 remake of the 1923 film.

So could I still pick the 1923 Hunchback as a remake of the 1911 version?

Nah, I'll go for another French novel adaptation: 1943's Phantom of the Opera, a remake of the 1925 version.

I get in a recurring argument with my friend as to whether two movie adaptations of the same source material actually means the later one is a remake. I say it is not. Sometimes a movie may actually be based on the previous movie as much as it is the source material, but not always. But for the sake of this game, it seems we can count every version of the same material to be in the remake category. Sorry, I was answering a question nobody asked.

FWIW, I agree

I’d like it to be more of a ‘True Grit’ kind of remake...

Winner.

FYI, I didn't consider Bram Stoker's Dracula to be a remake, even though that's a very underrated movie.
