Oof... Frozen shoulder apparently really sucks.
I had a co-worker with it. His doctor basically told him that it will go away on it's own... in 6 months to 3 years. He did physical therapy, which helped some. Otherwise they were talking about possible surgery. But he definitely was not having fun. He'd wake up every time he rolled over.

Yeah. That’s still me. Bed time sucks.
And I was also told the same thing.
Although I think I was told ‘could take over a year’, not that it may actually be 3 years.
It’s not well understood in the medical community. The cause of it, nor the real fix for it. It’s not washed away with a steroid. PT helps kinda loosen it, but after a number of months you start to question how much of it is the PT and how much of it is actually just time passing. I’m sure it helped even if not to address the frozen shoulder.

Thats why pain is there...to worn you not to do those things like walk it off.... Same as if you break your leg...pain....dont try to walk. "_Just walk it off. I push past pain until it goes away, because pain is in the mind and one mustn't give in.

Ah, here's an image of what they are going to do to me next week, my robotic radical prostatectomy.
Here's the robot they will be using, next to the doctor.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
I have a swollen rotator cuff. That's usually caused by a specific injury, so the doc was a little puzzled that I couldn't remember one. The treatment is anti-inflammatory painkillers, icing, and (eventually, when the pain starts to ebb) some shoulder bursitis range-of-motion exercises. If there's no improvement in a week he'll give me a blast of cortisone, but that's never the first choice of treatment.
I'm going to walk to CVS now to pick up my pills.

I think I have mentioned this before (perhaps in this very thread). One time I sprained something in my shoulder while putting on a jacket. It hurt when I tried to raise my arm, so I stopped doing that. For two years.

Except that humans evolved around walking. Our bodies are designed to function with us walking for ~10 or more hours per day. It's why we can get away with having our heart in such an inefficient location (above most of the bits that need blood.) Walking is how we operate the pumps and valves that keep our bodies functioning. And it is why sitting is so bad for us. Walking resolves a considerable number of pains, many of which are a direct result of not moving enough.
That doesn't mean that everything benefits from walking. You don't walk off a sprained ankle. Or that you should ignore pain. But for many pains and injuries? Get off of your ass and get moving.

I definitely have some old sports injuries that don't like me sitting on my ass too much. For example, I took a fall while skiing 10(?) years ago, tweaked my knee. Did an MRI to rule out any serious structural damage, it didn't show anything so I didn't do any treatment. The orthopedic specialist that evaluated the MRI said that there was some fluid accumulated around the MCL but not enough to justify any draining procedure, and that it would just heal on its own. And it mostly did - but if I go too long without any kind of exercising, the pain in the knee comes back. Serves as a reminder for me to go hit the treadmill.

+1. Being sedentary is bad, and pain encourages that. If you surrender to pain it will define you. Aunt Jeanne is right when she says "walk it off" (altho it's a family joke because it's her advice for everything). She's 96 years old so she's walked a lot off.Blackhawk wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 2:18 pmExcept that humans evolved around walking. I am so sorry to hear about your son and it must feel terrible for him and you guys too. Parents are really super heroes to put in the hard work and love for your kids. Good luck Skinypupy.Skinypupy wrote: ↑Wed Aug 31, 2022 5:06 pm Not necessarily my own medical issue, but definitely something I feel like I'm getting too old for.
Wonder Twin 9.3b has suffered from encopresis issues for a number of years now. It's a horrible thing for anyone to not have full control over their bowels, much less a 9 year old kid. We've watched him go from happy, active, and cheerful to sullen, withdrawn, and hesitant due to the issue. He wants desperately to fix it, but is also absolutely terrified of any of the typical measures that are required to do so, such as enemas, high-dose laxatives, etc. The last time he had to do an enema at the hospital, it literally took three nurses and us to pin him down.
He's been to multiple doctors, specialists, and specialists of specialists. We got him into a clinic that specializes in anorectal malfunctions and other bowel related issues. We spent most of the past two days doing imaging and other testing. We finally got their recommended treatment regimen yesterday. Daily (yes, daily) high volume enemas...for six months.
I honestly have no idea how we're going to do this. I feel like we're going to irreparably traumatize the poor kid mentally in an effort to fix the issue.

Oh, and here is the good news. YEA!! I am so happy for you guys!!! Good luck with the long haul!Skinypupy wrote: ↑Sun Sep 04, 2022 10:08 pmSo, the first two days were horrific. He fought it every step of the way, screaming absolute bloody murder. We were very patient and got through it, but...yeah. It was really rough.
Over the last three days though, I think he's started to realize how much this is helping him. He hasn't soiled any pants once since we started (he used to be going through 3-4 paid of underwear a day), he doesn't stink, his appetite is back, and he can be active without being afraid he's going to mess. It's honestly like having a whole different kid in the house. He's cheerful, he's actively running around, he's not as mopey, he's more confident, and he's sleeping better. We've figured out a routine and now that he realizes it's not as awful as he had built it up in his mind, it's pretty easy. Last two nights were done without any fuss at all. It's truly incredible the difference that it's making.
We haven't broken it to him yet that this will likely have to continue for the next six months (hoping that doesn't turn the attitude back negative), but it is getting much, much easier.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
I snapped a ligament in my left shoulder throwing someone out from deep centerfield in a softball game once. It largely doesn't bother me, except when I try to throw (then it doesn't work). It can also be troublesome when doing any sort of manual labor.Unagi wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 9:04 amI developed (last year) a 'Frozen Shoulder' - and it hurt like hell doing specific motions but didn't hurt when I pushed against someone holding my arm down... That was key in the diagnosis. The muscles/ligaments could push back against someone trying to hold me down, so they were OK in that regard, but they would (or a nerve would) scream bloody murder and not be able to move into any number of positions.Kraken wrote: ↑Tue Sep 06, 2022 10:09 pm Can one dislocate a shoulder in one's sleep?
My right arm is just barely functional today, with the help of some CBD tincture and Advil. But my right foot -- the bane of my existence for the past several weeks -- feels fine! It's like the right side of my body has a minimum pain quota that it's just moving around. Yesterday it was my elbow.
If I'm still crippled in the morning I'm calling the damned doctor.
Got a shot, helped about 40-50% of it.
Went to PT for a few months - helped another 20-25% of it.
Over the year, it's now up to about 90% normal, with just one real maneuver that still makes me wince.
A few years ago, I had trigger finger in my left (dominant) hand's ring finger. Not only could I not wear a ring on that finger (the joint was swollen) but when it would lock, straightening it out felt like trying to bend your finger backwards (if you're not double-jointed). I tried bowling with it...was that ever a mistake. Fortunately my then-toddler son became unbearable and we had to extract ourselves from the event. The last time I bowled prior to this, 7 of 8 games were over 200. Anyway, I got the shot, had to wear a brace for a month and two weeks after taking off the brace it started locking again. Laparoscopic surgery to enlarge the sheath around the nerve was the next treatment option. I stalled...and then six months later the problem just went away. I still have bad arthritis now in both hands that can be debilitating at times, but it doesn't compare to what that trigger finger was like.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
I got a call from the concierge (again, I'm not kidding) of the clinic, who was contacting me to let me know the times and other info. Turns out that worrying about traffic on the morning of the surgery isn't an issue, as we have to be there at five in the morning . It's not because the surgeon does surgeries all day, he just likes to get his surgeries done early. Sheesh. Since I have trouble sleeping in a strange bed I'll probably get very little sleep in the hotel the night before, but that's OK since I have to stay overnight after the surgery and snoozing will help past the time. I will be worried about my wife, but she will tell me to knock that talk off and so I guess I shall .

Ya for kidney surgery I had to in in a different town at 6am or 7am. I had to get up at like 4am..I dont go to bed until 1am lol. Most of the morning was busy work like changing in a gown, getting IV started...which I swear had pre knockout juice in it as I cant remember but bits and pieces after that IV started..... another waiting room area in bed this time, the old needle through my back and wire thread from there through my kidney and out my wiener . Glad I dont remember that one. Musta shot some more juice into my hand. Then a 3rd waiting room where I had to keep trying to pee and then turned sick and thats all I remember until waking up in the room for the night.
The doc had us set up like a Henry Ford line...next next next.
And also I haven't been bowling in at least 27 years. I loved to bowl as a teen. But after meeting my wife we only went a couple times. I didn't want to just go and make her watch me bowl. She was a better bowler than me but due to physical problems had to quit. Ive thought about going lately but I dont really want to bowl alone plus the only place I know of that we have now is some goofy upscale fun place with loud music, beer, and at night they have the blacklight glow in the dark stuff. It might be ok...dont know. Bowling is still pretty cheap. Not as cheap as the 80s and 90s but meh.
I swear though I had the most fun at our old underground bowling alley that doubled as a fallout shelter. Was built in the 50s. There was ONE ball in the entire place that fit my hand just right. I loved it.
EDIT: NM..I looked at prices of their snacks and read reviews of the place. Kinda bad reviews kinda good. But they sound rude and dont know what they are doing.
Plus a hot dog is $5??? $5!? ..I can buy 24 or 36 hotdogs in the store for that $5. Sheesh.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
My swollen rotator cuff healed up a whole lot faster than I thought it would and that's about 90% fine again. However, on Thursday I broke a toe, so now there's something new to ice. It's always something.
Despite being impressively swollen and bruised, it doesn't hurt much. I was able to do a 3/4-mile hike on Saturday with only some minor balance issues from one toe not pulling its weight (literally).

You know, that mention about your balance makes me think about my wife's issues. She has arthritis in her feet that is forcing the toes outwards, which affects her balance. I wasn't sure if it was something specific to that condition or if anyone with toe issues might also have balance issues. So now I know more about it.
Tomorrow evening we head off to go to the hotel before my very early morning Tuesday surgery. I'm anxious about the situation, not so much the surgery as what happens afterwards. When they talk about bladder spasms and other not very fun stuff I'm reminded that for at least a month after my surgery it's going to be my wife having to look after me. I'm not used to not being healthy. I've always been the one who lifts the heavy weights, does the driving, takes care of a lot of the manual chores and all the other things that you realize you either won't be able to do or aren't allowed to do.
Not to mention possible nausea, incontinence, bowels issues, cramps, etc. Sheesh, why am I doing this again? Oh, that's right, cancer. Well, fuck cancer

I cut a corner too close and kicked a footlocker. Hard.
A broken toe is not an old-age thing and this isn't my first one. I didn't even think it was broken until my D.O. friend said it was.
I hear you about being the family workhorse. My Wife does only slightly over 0% of the physical labor around here. If I were laid up she would discover that we don't really have a trash fairy, a lawn fairy, a food fairy, and all the rest.
Hope you have a speedy and smooth recovery.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
As requested, the first post of my AAR
Arrived at the hospital ten minutes early for my five am appointment (because as Vince Lombardi said, five minutes early is ten minutes late ). The doors were closed since the lobby doesn't open till 5am
But at five the concierge was waiting for us (me and one other guy had 5am slots). I was first on the list so I got each of the steps first; sign the last minute forms, got briefed by the anesthesiologist, got my IV in, shaved my stomach (that's where the robot goes in), etc.
I don't remember what else happened, just waking up in the recovery area. I felt pretty good, which was mostly the pain killers. However, it took a long time for a room to open up for me. By the time they took me to my room I was starting to hurt.

The surgery is the easy part (for the patient). It's the recovery that's more interesting.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
AAR #3 . Still in the hospital after my prostate surgery.
It's 4:25 in the morning. I'm a light sleeper and so every door closing door the hall stirs me. I did get some solid sleep but I'll be happy to get back to my quiet house.
Things continue to go well. The two things that the staff emphasize me to do is drink plenty of water and walk a lot, both of which I'm doing to a fine degree. I've been doing so much fluids that a couple of times I've had to call for a nurse to drain my collection bag rather than wait for their normal rounds. They are positively impressed with my urine output, a phrase I never thought I'd be writing
Walking has been easy for me since most mornings I power walk three miles. But in the hallways I've run into other patients that had the same surgery on the same day (the doc does ten each day) and they are walking very shakily and are still on IVs. Which always reminds me that there but for the grace of God (or some other divine being or fate or whatever) go I.
My wife left to get dinner and stay in the hotel but should be here in a couple of hours since we have a class at 7:30am to brief those of us who are going home. Because I've had so many other distractions I haven't been able to angst about her being away, but then I do have ready a note with the description of the car and license plate, just in case
Hopefully the next AAR posting will be done from home

+1. I fell out of mine (though not as powery as it should be) due to GI issues. I'm trying to get in a state where I start again. It was the best thing I was doing for my health in years and I've been noticeably worse off for stopping this last month or more.

Preach it. I just got back from my 3-mile morning walk, which I'm convinced is the only thing keeping me from getting decrepit. I'm glad walking serves you well, too, and hope you'll be back on the road soon.

I need to walk more, but the climate around here is awful and getting worse. Going for a walk in 85% humidity isn't walking; it's swimming laps.

Re: We're getting old (OO medical complaints)
So, my ex asked me to drive her to the hospital three Sundays ago, with weakness and vertigo. After four days in the hospital, they sent us home with a diagnosis of hyponatremia and some lighthearted advice to have her drink Gatorade and to get a couple of good meals into her.
Last night, I had to sleep over, because she was very weak. Good thing I was off today.
After taking her to visit a friend, she sends me an email that one of her test results seems to indicate an autoimmune disease diagnosis might be in her future. Waiting to hear from her doctor.
Fuck.

AAR #4. I'm back at home, arrived here yesterday noontime. Things are going well. My catheter comes out next Monday and then I'll just be taking it easy for several weeks.
