So it's meaningless to say you've seen them for $550.
Indeed, that's about as useful as observing how you've seen e-mail from the desk of a Nigerian barrister, with assurances of a large sum of money courtesy of an unclaimed inheritance.

Ive seen that too.
In real prices from real companies the RTX 3080 is running about $770.
So half a left kidney. Down from a left kidney and a sperm donation.

i'm again going to pay attention to power consumption for the next GPU i buy - and efficency will be a deciding factor
* performance-per-watt will be a huge -even primary- factor
* 'ultra' 4K gaming is also going to be secondarily important (going to move from a 2005-era VGA 1280x1040 4:3 monitor to a 4K one) so will see what next-gen brings to the table
* also waiting for next-gen card specs to see what raytracing looks like there
i still suspect my next GPU will be from AMD, but keeping options open

not that i'd really buy anything from Asrock (budget PC component manufacturer)

I want a new machine so I can waterfall mine down to my son for his computer classes. It seems really dumb not to wait for the 4xxx series to come out, but those are some tempting prices.

No loss to my eyes. had 2 or 3 EVGA cards die right at the end of the warranty. So goodbye. And they were my favorite card maker once. id not bother looking at other brands. Things change.

Im pretty sure this is the best year for GPU upgrades.
EVGA's graphics cards have exclusively used Nvidia GPUs since its founding in 1999, and according to Gamers Nexus, GeForce sales represent 80 percent of EVGA's revenue, making this a momentous and arguably company-endangering change. But EVGA CEO Andrew Han told Gamers Nexus that the decision was about "principle" rather than financials—Han complained about a lack of communication from Nvidia about new products, including information about pricing and availability.
Nvidia's pricing strategy was apparently another sore point for EVGA. Nvidia's first-party Founders Edition cards could often undercut the pricing of cards offered by EVGA and other vendors, forcing them to either lower prices or lose sales as a result.
I guess he covers some of that in your video, but It's too long to watch.

Makes you wonder if nVidia is about to go bye bye in some way. Heard nothing but awful stuff about them for a few years now. Time for a new player to come in and wipe them out as is tradition.

Doubt they're going to go away anytime soon. Many other manufacturers rely on them and their chips to put out their own cards and would be left in a lurch if they did. Plus, you can't very well leave AMD be the only one making GPU chips.

For some reason I thought their data center and AI businesses were typically a larger part of revenue, but nope. 80% normally came from graphics cards, but recently it’s been just 30%. Huge shift for any company to adjust to.
“After continued growth across several quarters despite supply chain constraints continuing to be an issue, the global economic downturn has caught up to US chip producer NVIDIA. The company generated $6.7 billion in Q2, a decrease of around $1.6 billion compared to Q1. This result can be attributed to an unprecedented nosedive in one of the chip producer's central revenue pillars.
NVIDIA is primarily known for its gaming graphics processing units (GPU), which only made up 30 percent of its total revenue between April and July and saw a revenue drop of 44 percent compared to the previous quarter. Propping up the unexpected drop in revenues is the company's data center segment, which grew by one percent. According to CEO Jensen Huang, the company is "navigating [its] supply chain transitions in a challenging macro environment and [...] will get through this" despite issuing a revenue forecast of $5.9 billion for the third quarter.”

Is RTX no longer a big deal? I have been holding out for YEARS to buy a card with that functionality, but it seems no one really talks about it anymore. Is it the "3D movies" of gaming now?
I do have a couple of Minecrafters en casa if that matters.

I thought RTX was just standard fare these days ...like texture and lighting or shadows or lens flares and god rays...just became part of the norm now.
I still dont have any RTX ...I remember when shadows and such caused my system to crawl.

Those prices though! I'll be in the market for a new card soon, and at those prices, Nvidia priced them way out of my price range. I'll most likely just get a 2000 series or 3000 series card next when I get to my upgrade.

No, my impression has that now that we're (nearly) three generations into the tech, it's just standard.

raytracing currently tends to be limited to glass and water puddles. making EVERYSINGLELIGHTSOURCE raytraced - and forget about 60fps ... or even 30fps - involves PC GPU power that doesn't exist for the home user yet.

Yeah, and normally as tech matures, prices come down. But because of the cryptosaga and the pandemic related scarcity issues, they've actually gone up.
Wondering now, what are the AMD prices looking like at this point?

lots of rebates and bundles lately, which is the last-ditch effort to reduce inventory before actually marking the prices down

Now see, that seems far more reasonable. Part of me still wonders what their latest generation will be priced at though. And if they're still more reasonably priced, then I wonder if Nvidia will pretty much be forced to do an about-face on the pricing.
And it's not just the pricing this gen either, it's the size of the card. What we've seen so far makes it look liked the card will need its own separate housing at some point, because at 4 slots, that is more than would be allowed for some cases.

They should be getting smaller but nope. Bigger and bigger and bigger and hotter and more power.

Theoretically, they should be getting smaller and more efficient, not bigger. 4 Slots is a lot to ask to give up in computing terms. If that's the trend, then I think we'll start to see external GPUs being the norm by next gen. That would be one way to keep from motherboards getting too big from needing more slots.

It sounds like the market demands that each generation get a substantial boost in performance, but that their ability to provide that without increasing the size of the card is limited (especially in the current situation.) So they're left with a choice - create a card that is huge and hot, or create a card that is only a half-step up from today's cards, but the same size (or even smaller) and take a beating on the reviews, and then take another, worse beating when their competition steps in with giant cards that give 20 FPS more.
Most of the market is obsessed with power, not efficiency.
