Farming Simulator 22 - Coming 11/22/21

Post by jztemple2 »

It might be a little early to be talking up the game, but it's been so damn hot outside I thought I'd mention a new feature that's coming with Farming Simulator 22 (Steam link) that might help cool you off.

I have two versions of this now. The latest being 19. As cool as the new seasons are I'm going to to wait for a major price drop on this one.

I've also gotten previous versions, four in fact going back to FS 2013. I didn't put too many hours in the last one, it wasn't what I really wanted at the time. However, in the three years since then my taste in gaming is changing. I'm finding strategy games like Civ VI just too overwhelming in detail. I purchased Old World back on an Epic sale, but every time I start the game and look at it I just sigh and go back to desktop . I just can't manage to get enthusiastic for a game that required so much planning and calculating.

However, I'm finding that I'm really liking first person games that aren't necessarily shooters. When I initially got SnowRunner over a year ago I put in a couple dozen hours then uninstalled. However, a few weeks ago I tried it again and I'm now up to 125 hours plus on it :D. There's just something about driving something mechanical to do a job that has been appealing to me. I had put in a lot of hours on American Truck Simulator but I'm now finding it too boring since I've tasted the challenge of SnowRunner.

So, for those who might be wondering what all the fuss is about, I'm posting links to some articles and news updates that will get folks up to date with what's been announced about the game.

First Look at production chains in Farming Simulator 22. For the first time Farm Simulator will include production chains that you can own and manage.

First Look at the new crops in Farming Simulator 22. There are three new crops in FS22, grapes, olives and sorghum.

And a couple more info updates just prior to release next week:

About the AI worker in Farming Simulator 22...
Need a helping hand on your farm? If your friends are currently not available to join you for a crossplay-session in Farming Simulator 22, you might want to hire a worker.

Since we showed you a screenshot a couple of months ago, you were asking about this ominous "AI worker" screen. Indeed, we were holding back the information since we were working on this feature until the last minute. Here's a little preview, now.

Farming Simulator Academy: Introducing game tutorials for beginners
Farming Simulator and it's scope of gameplay mechanics can be overwhelming when starting out as a newcomer. Cultivators, plows, subsoilers - what's the difference? And, isn't power harrow the name of a Swedish metal band or something?

In case you're absolutely new to the game, or tried to convince your non-farming friends to work on your virtual farm, you might relate. Maybe you need help. You've come to the right place!

New dev post, Welcome to Erlengrat - trailer, screenshots & map overview

By the way, the game is on sale for 20% off on Green Man Gaming
Vast mountainous grasslands, curvy roads, moving passenger trains and cable cars at the horizon: Erlengrat represents the European alpine regions and invites you to an idyllic landscape, perfectly designed for grassland care and animal husbandry. Watch the brand-new trailer below!

Check out the map highlights, below. We already introduced Haut-Beyleron and Elmcreek to you, and with Erlengrat, our tour of guiding you through the maps of Farming Simulator 22 is now over. In just a few days, it's time to choose your destination and start farming.

• representative of a tourist destination in the German-speaking Alps
• overall altitude difference of 260 meters between highest and lowest point
• multiple vantage points to overlook Erlengrat and its surroundings
• a lot of sightseeing locations, including a shopping mile
• looks especially beautiful during winter

FS22 have now been released, 23.4 GB on Steam. I'm installing but as I'm just about to go out the door for a few days of touristing before having Thanksgiving with the wife's family I probably won't even be able to fire it up till at least Thursday night

Now that I'm back from our Thanksgiving trip I've been able to put in a few hours on the game. There have been the usual minor bugs, nothing horrible, but I've almost rage quit about three times today because the damn game is so hard to get into. The tutorial is a joke. There is in-game documentation:
Image

...but it is not searchable and there are a lot of niggling questions that pop up that aren't addressed, particularly since there is no tool-tip support. However, I've posted questions on the Steam forum and gotten quick help, so that's good. And I needed it since I managed to jam my pickup into the girders of a bridge  :
Image

And the greatest help has been Farming Simulator Academy which is an online resource of lessons on how to actually get things done. And I've found I can highlight and copy an entire page, then paste it into a Word document and print it out for later reading and note taking. Really, it's not that hard if you are patient and willing to do some trial and error.

So overall I'm pretty happy with the game so far, GIANTS has been soliciting bug reports and in the past they were quick to post updates. Also speaking of GIANTS, they use an in-game mods selection and installation system so they can vet mods for compliance and compatibility which is very nice. GIANTS has already released several of their own mods, and the community has been active as well.

My favorite current mod is the Government Subsidy mod. You post a sign like the one below to indicate that you are getting a government subsidy . There are two varieties of signs, one that gets you $350 an hour... and one that gives you $350,000 an hour . This is good if you just need that expensive tractor and are already way in hock to the bank. Post a sign, let an in-game hour go by and get the $350K, then take down the sign... or not

Running off to DL the Government Subsidies mod....

Thanks for the link to the guide. Getting started in this game is always the hardest thing. It looks pretty good on the PS5, although my major benefit is the controller - it just feels much better using that PS5 controller than the older PC controller I have.

I got the pickup truck out by ramming it with my tractor and actually pushing it through the rest of the bridge

This is a good video, TOP 10 MODS OF THE WEEK - All Platforms - Farming Simulator 22 by Farmer Cop. Farmer Cop put out a lot of useful videos for FS19 and has begun doing the same for FS22. He satisfies two requirements I have for watching folk's YouTube videos. First, he doesn't webcam himself into the video, something I find rather narcissistic and annoying since it usually blocks some of the game screen. And he talks in a reasonably normal tone, if a bit fast. Anyway, the mods he highlights in this video are pretty good, although I notice that several are for PC and Mac only.

My current fleet of vehicles and trailers/tools.
Image

To simplify things I have a tractor for each trailer or tool. I have that semi-tractor & trailer for deliveries but I normally keep it parked off site. To make a big enough parking area I used the Landscape option in the shop and put down gravel on a field.

This is my current farm, the field numbers in blue are my fields. I'll probably gravel over fields 48 and 49 for other uses, like animals and buildings. Those two fields are awkwardly shaped and give the AI helpers fits.
Image

The game is an improvement over FS19. The AI helpers are better, although I still can't get them to use a forage wagon to pick up a straw swath or use the baler either. However, at least with grain crops, they do pretty well. There are a number of other nice small changes, but so far I'm just scratching the surface.

I've been putting together some notes so I can keep up with procedures. The info in-game is OK but I like having an end-to-end list at times, like the below:
Grain Harvesting Routine
- Starting with havested field.
- Collect straw using forager wagon or baler. Bales will need to be collected.
- Mulch the field.
- Using overlay, see if field needs to be plowed, otherwise use cultivator.
- Use stone collector to remove stones.
- Using a roller, roll the field.
- Using overlay, see if lime needs to be added.
- Sow the field.
- Perform first fertilizer run.
- Remove weeds.
- Perform second fertilizer run.
- Harvest when ready.

I don't know if anyone else is following this thread (hello? anyone? Bueller?) but I thought I'd post a few things. First of all, FS22 is on sale at Green Man Gaming for 25% off. I've used GMG for years, so take that for what it is worth.

I've switched on the Seasons option in the game. What this does is restrict planting of certain crops to certain times of the year, making it more realistic and also more immersive. I've also enabled the Snow option, which means I'll be driving around in snow plows and spreading salt during the slow winter months :D . FS22 has an option to select the number of days you play during each month. This is important because, for instance, you can't fertilize on the same day you plant, but if you have, as suggested, three days per month activated (you can have as little as one or as many as twenty-eight) you can plant on one day, fertilized the next day of the month (actually ten days later by the calendar) and do your second fertilization on the third day of the month.

I now have chickens, pigs and sheep, and some lights back there as well, so no one walks off with my prize Rhode Island Red.
Image

I've also moved my equipment from that tight parking space behind the silos to an open area between a couple of roads. I've sure the county doesn't mind . I've added lights so no one drives off with my mulcher:
Image

Now, some tractor porn :D

Not really . Except for a few AI walking and driving around the town is pretty empty. I'm more worried about my AI Helpers who seem to have an urge to let their tractors go hump a tree

Good article from PC Gamer, If you love cool spaceships you should really play Farming Simulator 22
Do you enjoy locking S-foils in attack position while piloting your X-Wing? Do you like when Serenity pulled a Crazy Ivan maneuver in Firefly by rotating one engine? How about when any sci-fi spaceship slowly lowers a walkway or extends its wings or has a bunch of metal moving parts that slowly shift into position and make a cool-looking ship even cooler-looking?

I'm gonna go ahead and state, for the record, that the vehicles in Farming Simulator 22 will give you that same feeling of pleasure. In fact, I think anyone who loves cool spaceships will love Farming Simulator 22's vehicles and equipment. You're not zooming through outer space or blowing up TIE Fighters. You're probably just baling hay or harvesting sorghum or spraying a field with pesticides. But damn if these machines aren't completely satisfying to watch.

I'm following this! Keep writing!

I installed the government subsidy and it is a life saver. I felt bad grabbing 350,000 Euros (I play the France map) for nothing, but then remembered just how long and how hard it would be to get that the normal way, even on Easy. I've always gotten frustrated by these games, because you have to start off so slow and I want to try cool things (like viticulture and olive groves). This time, I'm going to approach it like I did when I used the money cheat way back in The Sims - I want to play my way, not play some drawn out life sim. So, if I need some cash, I'll plop down that sign to get me started.

I told my wife that to understand the appeal of this game to me, she has to imagine me as a five year old sitting in a huge sand box in the backyard with a bunch of Tonka trucks to push around :D. Oh, and a bunch of other five year olds who I can direct to push other trucks around doing things for me . Now imagine that you tell that five year old that he can either have only a few trucks for several hours, and then slowly add one or two more at a time, or by sticking a "Government Subsidy" sign in the sand he can have as many trucks as he wants

Winter is coming... wait, it's here:
Image

Unfortunately, snow isn't really interesting in the game as it's winter and except for taking care of the animals, there's no real reason for driving around in the area. Speaking of animals, I now have all the different facilities for animals; chickens, bees, pigs, sheep, cows and horses. Horses are a bit of a nuisance. You have to ride each horse every day to develop their fitness. And then you sell them. Silly horses. Anyway, it's fun to ride them:

So I was playing today, starting my spring planting, etc. And then I got three CTD in a row . I'm just not interested in dealing with CTDs right now. Had it happened once, or even twice, I might have tried to get through it, but after the third crash at almost the same point in the game I think I'm going to hold off for now. The irritating thing was that it didn't happen while doing the same thing, I was doing different things, so it isn't like I can just switch to another vehicle or just not do that thing :grund:

I decided to give the game another try today, but when I started the game and went to load my saved game, it was missing . I went and checked the save game location under My Docs and there are indeed files in the save game slot file I was using, but they don't show up in the game. I've posted my issue to the Steam forum but I'm otherwise stuck. I've got 47 hours in that save, I'm going to be pissed if I can't get the game to see the save files.

I found a save game backup folder which has a number of previous save game folders for each save game slot. The first two newest save games didn't load, apparently corrupted, but the third newest one did load so I'm back in business. However, I'll be manually saving more often.

Are you still playing FS22? I've become very interested lately after trying it out on Gamepass for XBOX. So I bought it on PC and just got a steering wheel. I'm pretty sure I'll like it since I liked ATS.

I'm not playing it anymore, but I did put in fifty hours on the game which is a lot for me. Once I'd seen all the gameplay (different crops, different types of machines, weather, that sort of thing) I was ready to move on. I enjoyed it but I tend to prefer to not play a game endlessly unless I'm seeing new things.

No, I just edited the save game, which was indeed easy :D. I just wanted to have fun with the game rather than making it a tycoon experience.
