The app appears to be the first project of the Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), which will list on the Nasdaq through a merger with Digital World Acquisition Group, according to an announcement tweeted out by spokeswoman Liz Harrington. The transaction values TMTG at up to $1.7 billion, Harrington said.

Whoever they are you can bet the Trump family owned tons of their value before this announcement and are selling it off now to people who will be buying into "TMTG" which may or may not become a real media company.

“Based on the screenshots I have seen, it absolutely is based on Mastodon,” Eugen Rochko, founder and lead developer of Mastodon told Motherboard in an email. He pointed to one screenshot of Truth Social’s error message, which is using the default Mastodon elephant mascot.
“Well that looks familiar,” the Mastodon Twitter account tweeted in response to Daily Dot reporter Mikael Thalen posting a screenshot of a Truth Social account he managed to register in Donald Trump’s name. Rochko told Motherboard this Truth Social screenshot “looks exactly like the Mastodon UI with the light theme.”
Its terms also say that “all source code” of Truth Social is proprietary. That might run afoul of Mastodon’s own license.
“The main thing is that Mastodon is free software, released under the AGPLv3 license, so anyone can use it—provided they comply with the license. The main part of the license is making the source code and any modifications to it available to the public,” Rochko told Motherboard. With Truth Social saying that its code is proprietary “that would be a problem, as that would indicate a license violation,” Rochko added.

I'm shocked that this is a half assed grift. I just saw the screenshot and they just changed the logo and switched it to the light background. For fuck sakes people. Can they now block them from using their code? That would be hilarious.

I'm honestly not sure that GETTR (I keep wanting to call it GRIFTR) is screwed. I mean, god knows what their business model was to begin with. But given Trump's history on executing on any actual business plan, there's no way that Trump's network is going anywhere. So save as much money as possible, heap (more) praise on Trump, wait for him to lose interest, and then "merge" with Trump's network in a few months when Trump gets bored and needs a face-saving out.

I could see that happening. They are for practical purposes designed to be cesspools. Eventually they'll probably have to merge since advertising spend is going to be limited no matter what. They've already run into issues over lack of moderation with child abuse/child porn sneaking into the GETTR network.
I don't have the time or inclination to visit the site, but given Florida Man's lack of attention to detail, I hope there will be a greatest hits of trolling and exploits.

I suspect his entirely involvement is a hand-wave and a "make this happen by Friday" comment, so his flunkies rushed together an open-source platform solution to show it was possible and then it became canon as soon as it was presented.
