I don't understand "current streak" and "max streak." I've played 8 games. I won 4 of them in 4 tries and the other 4 (including today) in 5 tries. It says my current streak is 3 and max streak is 4.
I really only care about keeping my win percentage at 100, but those streak numbers baffle me.
The game seems to think you won 4, missed one, then won 3. Which is obviously odd if it also says you have a 100% win percentage. Someone eating your cookies?
I've played 10 days, and my stats show 10 played, 100% win, 10 current, 10 max.

Sounds like you missed a day in the middle.
Yeah, this makes sense if the word 'streak' means 'of all possible games' rather than 'of games you've played' which is how I first took it. So Kraken didn't lose one, he just missed one.

Missed my first one today playing on Hard.

I didn't realize there was a hard mode. Looks like that just forces you to use confirmed letters in guesses? Like once you know that the word starts with an S or B or what have you all subsequent guesses need to have that letter in the right position?
Yes, once a letter is green, you must have it in that spot in all future guesses. I read quickly and saw that you had to use the clues it gives in all future guesses. I thought that meant if you got a yellow letter, you had to include the yellow letter in the next guess in a new spot (because you already know it can't go there). I was wrong - you just have to use the letter, but you can repeat the wrong spot. I might still do it the harder way, though, to add to the challenge.
If you know it is the wrong spot and you need to use the letter, what is the logic of putting it in the wrong spot again? Any good reason to do that instead of trying to find the right spot for it?
Early on it can be more beneficial to try and identify more letters than to start guessing. The ideal word to ID letters may repeat a wrong one that way.
my second guess was almost penis but I figured that would be wrong based on filters. I'm beginning to come around to the idea that the words are always common.
Not as good as many of you fine folks, but I'm happy to get it right in 4 guesses.

PANIC
I was curious about the odds of solving it in one guess so I looked it up and apparently there are about 12,000-13,000 five letter words in English, according to most online dictionaries. So it's statistically feasible if you use the same starting word for about thirty years.

Yeah, but the guy who created it only used a list that is MUCH shorter than that. If I remember from the NYT article, he ran the list past his partner (or somebody) and eliminated a lot of archaic answers that he felt people wouldn't get. Or something like that.
I'll never know my streak number easily, as I do some of them here at home, and lots of them at work.
Today's was fine, though I think I should generally wait a bit until I'm more awake.

EDIT: Added link to article (if it hasn't been included earlier in thread).
I have three out of five. I'm totally stuck. By trying remaining letters (and backing out) I can guarantee that I can look at four out of five in the correct pieces, but I can't see a single word forming there. Four out of five visible after only three guesses. And I know it's something obvious.
I think it's time for a 'no chance' guess just to eliminate some letters. Rememember, me: SONITARE! Like the toothbrush, but with a T... also like a Toothbrush (see, I just mnemoniced.)
/edit - Paid off. Got one more letter confirmed, and three more eliminated.

Yup. And I knew the third guess was extremely unlikely, but I haven't had enough caffeine and didn't see another to try.

Spoiler:
In retrospect, I think I blocked 'P' in the first slot, because caffiene-low me tried 'PANIR' earlier on (I was thinking of panier, probably.) It wouldn't accept it, and I think my brain said, "Nope, not a P."
I really need to do these after my tea has kicked in.
I have this issue where I make non-optimal guesses (non-hard-mode compliant) because I do my first couple of guesses pretty quickly...

PANIC
I repeated the A in the third position on my second guess, even though I had been told that wasn't correct. I do this about 80% of the time with my second or third guesses.
I took a while before the third guess (trying to get some of N, C, H into the word), but then as soon as I could add two of those letters to the mix, I submitted and was pleased that it went through!

I just noticed everybody is on the same one. I thought it would be random.
Yeah, I accidentally clicked on someone's spoiler for today's puzzle, since it was before midnight my time, and I didn't realize the puzzle already rolled over. Tried playing some Absurdle but it appears to be broken today (will only let you click the "random guess" button but not put in any letters).
