We drove to lunch in Orlando yesterday, going over the St Johns river near Christmas, FL.

It's been two months since Hurricane Ian dropped a bunch of rain in the area yet the St Johns at this location is still at minor flood stage. The level has gone down about a foot or so since the storm, but still looks to be about two to three feet above normal, and that's the summertime normal, not the winter dry season. Downstream there are still lots of people with flooded property. At least the airboaters are having a good time, there were mobs of them out the day after Thanksgiving.

The bizarre and destructive 2022 hurricane season ends
The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season draws to an official close on November 30, after generating 14 named storms, eight hurricanes, two major hurricanes, and an accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) of 95. Those numbers compare with the 1991-2020 averages for an entire season of 14.4 named storms, 7.2 hurricanes, 3.2 major hurricanes, and an ACE index of 123. Thus, the season was near-average for number of named storms and hurricanes, and below average for major hurricanes and ACE index, and it breaks an unprecedented streak of six consecutive years with an above-average ACE index (>126).

One hurricane from 2022 will surely get its name retired: Ian, with over $50 billion in damages and at least 145 deaths, ranking as the fifth-deadliest Atlantic hurricane of the past 60 years. The other major hurricane of 2022 – Hurricane Fiona, which brought major destruction to Puerto Rico and Canada – also has a strong chance of having its name retired.

Hurricane season end, winter season spins up: A meteorological hammer drops with blizzard conditions and severe weather
Decembers have been trending warmer across the contiguous U.S. in recent decades, but you wouldn’t guess it from the chilly conditions set to envelop most of the country between now and the new year. A major upper-level storm moving into the West on Monday will set off the big shift. Reinforcements of cold air from Canada and the Arctic will push toward the U.S. over the following few days.

Readings will tumble below average this week from the Rockies eastward, and then dip to even colder levels next week. Much of the central U.S. might stay below freezing for days on end, and temperatures could drop below zero Fahrenheit from Denver to Chicago northward.
