[Netflix] Umbrella Academy

Post by Jaymann »

I can't believe there was not a dedicated thread for one of my favorite series. Am 3 episodes into Season 3, but had to pause for a spoiler rant:
Spoiler:
Why did they have to make the Vanya/Viktor transformation the focal point of the season? Of course Elliot is free to do whatever they want in RL, but did they have to shoehorn that into the plot? I can't help but think of Viktor as a girl with short hair, and it is a big distraction. An accomplished actor should be able to play Vanya as written. If this plot point is in the comics, fine, I will shut up. But if they forced it in due to Elliot's lifestyle choices, I call bullshit.

Not reading your rant as I haven't watched season 3 yet, but I'm surprised there isn't a thread for this already as well. I don't watch TV pretty much at all and I blasted through the first 2 seasons. It's just such a fun show. I am a bit worried about all the new people they are bringing in for the 3rd season. Should start watching it this weekend.

I think the ensemble of actors are all good. But at the end of the day, I’m there for Number 5. Good lord that kid actor is just hilarious.

…although it appears he’s 18 now, so no longer a kid actor, I guess.

Ya he's freaking fantastic in his role. Klaus is fantastic as well. He has the best arc in season 2.

After seeing this thread I went and watched the first episode. I'm not sure what the premise of this is. Could one of you my friends, enlighten me?

It's a different take on the superhero genre, specifically one that is closer to X-Men in that there's a definite parent/child dynamic that influences the entire story but on the whole it's about superheroes, family dysfunction and....time travel.

The characters (and actors that portray them) are all excellent - definitely a character driven drama and not a big-budget movie with super hero special effects. Just based on some other things you've posted here during your tenure, I'm guessing you'd like it.

I'm totally burnt out on superhero crap, but this one just is so much fun that it gets a pass. I'm a sucker for the visuals and the music in the show. That's a big part of it.

6 foot 4 per the interwebs. Yeah he is a big, muscular dude for reals.

He is also the pretty great comic relief character Jeff in Doctor Who - The Eleventh Hour. Hard to believe that was 12 years ago.

Haven't started S3 yet.

I predict as soon as Number 5 shows up, you’ll stay for him if nothing else.

His crotchety, old man humor is great coming from a teenage kid.

Why do they never know what is going on in the house? Like break-ins, interlopers, gunplay.... "Did you hear something?"

I picked it back up again after not having time for TV. Enjoying it.

Well, that and it’s pretty far from the typical Marvel Avengers superhero stuff. Closer to Deadpool maybe.

Finished the season. Enjoyed it, but the ending was a bit underwhelming:
Spoiler:
At least they got Ben (alt) back but lost Sloane. No powers might be interesting.

Why did they change it from TV-14 to TV-MA for this 3rd season? I haven't watched yet so no spoilers please, I was just surprised to see it - given what has already been covered and/or implied.

I think Netflix’s position is now ‘when it doubt, it’s MA’

I’ve seen quite bc a bit of (IMO) ‘absolutely ok for non-mature audiences’ stuff rated as MA.

I just want to say the Footloose thing was just totally perfection.
So awesome.

Maybe that’s how it got the TV MA. Heh.

Arise, Gilead! :P

Also LOVED the Footloose bit and I normally hate stuff like that. It was almost "Community"-esque. I think that's a big reason I like the show...they don't quite reach "absurd" levels, but they don't mind inching right up to the line, and I think it's great.

Doesn't hurt that the writing is fantastic IMO.

It's official - series will end with Season 4:
“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago,” said showrunner Steve Blackman. “But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”

I may invest more time in it now, knowing it will have a proper ending.

Thought they could have ended it with Season 3, but will still tune in to see how it all wraps up.

I just finished season 3 last night. For some reason I just kept dragging my feet on finishing it. Or even starting it. Not sure why as I do enjoy the show. :?

Anyway, I liked it. I thought Klaus stole this season. He was in top form.

I thought Jayme Hargreeves was Anne Hathaway, even though I knew that couldn't be right.
