FIFA World Cup 2022

USA could only manage a 1-1 tie vs Wales.

This just in: England looks very good.

I want to watch it but then I remember at least 6500 migrant workers died to make it possible.

Odd that you'd start a thread and not mention Saudi Arabia's stunning upset of Argentina this morning.

Iran's #1 keeper had to leave the game early due to concussion. The backup keeper was not great. Let in a few softies. Not to take anything away from England but that score was a bit skewed.

Woke up a little after the half and watched the rest of the game. Was absolutely shocking.

That group may come down to how many goals Wales and the US can pump by Iran after yesterday's tie.

Though if Pulisic can't get out of his own way for the US, it might not matter.

Or if we can’t play two full halves without extreme fatigue.

I think it might be less fatigue and more inexperience. Pulisic had a few chances to send guys in early in the second half and just wouldn't take them like he did on the Weah goal.

The Zimmerman challenge on Bale was ill advised, too.

Japan upsetting Germany isn't nearly the upset of Saudi Arabia upsetting Argentina. Japan is arguably the best Asian team.

In other news, Spain looks like Spain. Cruising by an overmatched Costa Rica.

Looking forward to Canada/Belgium game later this morning!

Watched that game this morning. Good effort from Serbia, but Brazil was just dominant. 22 shots, sheesh.

That goal was amazing.

I actually tuned in just in time to see Ecuador score a goal against Netherlands only to have it called back :( . Something about "offsides" but they didn't really explain the rule. I thought it was strategy to obscure the view of the goalie.

Today is do or die for USA vs. England.

If you're in an offside position you can't interfere with the play such as by preventing a player/goalie from seeing the ball.

What constitutes an offside position?

An analyst came on and explained the infraction, but he had such a heavy brogue that I couldn't understand WTF he was saying.

US should at least have tossed it at the box at the end there. Otherwise solid showing by them for sure.

How do the standings work:

Is it it all play all?

How many teams advance?

Groups of four teams. Within each group, all play all. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie. Top two teams advance to the knockout rounds.

Great effort by the U.S. today against England. Being from there originally, I root for England . . . except when they're playing the U.S.

Now it all comes down to U.S. v. Iran on Tuesday. If the U.S. wins, we move on. Lose or draw, and it's Iran that moves on. Let's go!!!

Solid showing and a good result, but...

... for the first 60 minutes the US looked like the more skilled, creative team (great defense on Kane was huge all match ).

Then England got their subs in, and the US didn't until too late and the US didn't really threaten or even look dangerous the rest of the way.

In solid position, but dear lord if this team could close out strong they'd haver 6 points.

What a crazy day so far in Qatar, with Costa Rica upsetting Japan and Morocco upsetting Belgium.

Can Canada make it three-for-three before the Spain v Germany main event?

Nope. Croatia stomped them.

Spain/Germany is going to be fun to watch. I’m guessing the Germans revert to form and make it a fight. Don’t think Spain is going to run away with this one, but predicting outcomes at this World Cup has been tough, to say the least!

I thought Germany was on their way out of the tournament until they hit that last goal. Then, they almost pulled ahead a few minutes later. If they had secured the W over Spain, it would have been chaos! As it is, Germany is alive, at least for a while. I think they get out of the group stage if Spain beats Japan and they beat Costa Rica. Seems realistic, but, again, who knows in this World Cup?

Being a long time fan of the Columbus Crew I can tell you this is how Berhalter Coaches. His teams out possess the other team but don't score, he subs way too late to affect the game and he gets outplayed and out coached in the final 30 minutes leading to losses that should have been wins. He did this time and again with the Crew. It's super frustrating to watch.
