Shame my little lizards around the pool have to suffer the cold. I've put out a heating pad but they are suspicious of anything new.

Yeah, I know it's nothing new. But... it's something that isn't done up here, perhaps because of how frequently it snows.

Shoveled half the driveway and the walk.

-9 F

That was an improvement over the -13 F when I got up. :D

For the most part it didn't feel that cold. Possibly because there was no wind. But I finally threw in the to... shovel... when my eyes started to freeze shut.

Its about 43 here but the wind is kinda blustery so Im really cold outside even bundled up. Cant wait on the 30 mph wind and 6 degrees...brrrr.

In fact its the warmest part of the day right now so I better hit the shower up before I freeze.

Grocery store was mobbed and the roads are choked this afternoon. Thursday is the new Friday and people are trying to beat the storm. We're supposed to get heavy rain and high winds tonight with the temperature rising to 60. Then tomorrow afternoon the rain moves out and the cold moves in. It will be icy if the change comes too quickly. We're not expecting real extreme cold, but they say it will be the coldest xmas eve here in decades with highs in the 20s and windchill in the 0 range. Normal December highs are in the low 40s.

Wind, snow, brutal cold: Arctic front barrels eastward from Plains
A well-advertised Arctic outbreak was barging through the Great Plains toward the Mississippi Valley on Thursday, en route to reach the Atlantic Ocean by Saturday, Christmas Eve. Many locations in the central and eastern United States will get their lowest temperatures in more than 30 years, accompanied by a few hours of wind-whipped, travel-snarling snowfall.

At midday Thursday, blizzard warnings extended from far eastern Montana across the Dakotas to Iowa and Wisconsin, and also across many lake-facing parts of northern and western Michigan.

An incredible swath covering most of the nation – all the way from eastern Washington to northern Florida – was under a wind chill warning.

Life-threatening, snow-driving gusts raked much of eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska on Wednesday night, producing wind chills on the order of -40 to -50 degrees Fahrenheit.

I just hope the power doesn't go out this weekend. I dont have enough kerosene to last that long. I have a fireplace but nothing to burn in it...besides it hasn't been used at all in 10 years at least and the last time the chimney was actually swept was me around 1995.

I still remember going to Enterprise 1701 on Corrine Drive in Orlando and the owner, knowing my taste in gaming, saying how he had this new game that just arrived in the ziplock bag format. I was hooked :D. I was a big Star Fleet Battles player back in the eighties and early nineties. Of course I was the only person I knew who played SFB, so it was all solo. I collected all the modules and the Captain's Logs for many years. My rulebook had all the errata penciled in or had taped flaps of them .

I'm personally responsible for one particular bit of errata pertaining to planetary bases. We had a dispute about whether or not it was possible for them to use a cloak while resolving a battle in our homebrew strategic campaign (this was before they released Federation & Empire) so our ringleader sent the question to Stephen Cole along with a batch of other playtest feedback and questions. Many Orion pirate lives were lost after we received the reply...

I used to have a pretty comprehensive collection of SFB magazines (Nexus and Captain's Log). When Star Fleet Command was in development the devs were seeking out some specific SFB references. I still have some emails that I exchanged with Chris Taylor back in 1999 that culminated with me sending them my stash of Nexus magazines in exchange for a copy of the game manual signed by the dev team. I did take the time to photocopy everything before shipping it to them. Me-now is more than a little miffed with me-then for sending them the originals instead of the photocopies.

Still, I did get this:

But, hey, what about that weather. Crazy, huh?

We dropped from 30 to 10 to 5 in a couple of hours today. It's supposed to bottom out well below zero, with wind chills in the -35 to -45 range by tomorrow. My MiL arrived from the Philippines on Monday, said she wanted to experience real winter. Well, I have to give her credit, she bundled up and walked to the kid's school to walk them home today. I was going to try to drive them, but Uber was busy with surge pricing in the area and the school is just a few blocks away...

I still have my copy, but of course no autographs . And somewhere in my backups are the community versions of Starfleet Command 2 and Orion Pirates. I loved those games and I wish someone would put out remasters.

Yeah, how about that crazy weather? Here in Central Florida they are activating cold weather shelters for the weekend. And my brother in Asheville NC is expecting a low temp of -13 degF and possible 45 mph winds.

The big transition was preceeded by a haboob which is pretty rare in these parts. Since the temp was in the mid-40s, I swung through the car wash on the way home. When I got to my garage, my charge port was frozen shut. Fortunately we have a space heater in the garage, so one popped GFI circuit layer, I was able to get access to charging up my car over night. No issues with my drive in this morning, despite the brisk temps.

My online bud is from Maine. He says its going to be 50-70 mph wind and 2 inches of rain. He is in the UK so he lucked out. He said its not been bad there. Its actually been colder here. I dont get why as UK is as north as Canada.

It's windy AF here (51km/h, gusting to a nice 69 km/h) but the temperature is hovering at 0C with no appreciable wind chill. However, it's raining so there is going to be ice everywhere.

According to my UPS log, there was a significant power event at 0425 but we didn't actually lose power, so hopefully our luck holds on that front going forward.

Would be nice if the flash freeze hits sooner than later so trees stop uprooting and blowing over. Power outages around our area are numerous. Small, but numerous. With the temps dropping I can't imagine they'll want to mess around; it's going to be brutal.

Ya our lights have been flickering and there's a pole down a few streets over. Which is par for the course. You would think we would run out of trees to fall on the lines at some point. :P I cut down two gigantic trees in my front yard years ago. They terrify me.

The front hasn't reached us yet so I got up at nine to temps in the seventies, little wind and bright sunshine. Yet by dawn tomorrow it will be 31 degF with gusts to 20 mph. And except for a little sun tomorrow morning it will be overcast through till mid-week.
