[Disney+] X-Men 97
They're bringing the 90s X-Men cartoon back with original voice actors. Picks up where the original left off.

Boosted based on comments made elsewhere.

This show is surpassing all of my expectations. I thought it would be gimmicky and just made for nostalgia purposes, but it has been great so far.

Re: [Disney+] X-Men 97
It really has been. I was a bit blown away that by Ep3 they had covered dozens of comic books and over a decade's worth of material/story-lines that were slowly released to fans back in the day. The writing is tight.

Re: [Disney+] X-Men 97
How much of a continuation of the stories of the original cartoon is it? I only ever saw a few episodes of the classic series.

It’s a direct continuation, but as long as you’re somewhat familiar with the characters and X-men storylines you’ll be fine. There are also recap videos that will give you everything you need to know from those cartoons.
I tried to watch those original cartoons recently and couldn’t do it.

I’ve only shown my kids a small handful of the old cartoons and they’re doing fine keeping up with the new series. There are definitely moments or references that are more meaningful if you’ve seen the old series, but this stands on its own just fine. Well worth a watch. Last night’s episode in particular was amazing.

I need to believe there's going to be some comic-book level flim-flammery because otherwise I'm going to be rather upset.
Great episode, regardless. And I didn't all pick up on what was in your spoiler (the additional detail you noticed). That's....interesting.

To be fair, I immediately watched a recap breakdown of the episode to process what the hell I just saw and it was highlighted there.Smoove_B wrote:I need to believe there's going to be some comic-book level flim-flammery because otherwise I'm going to be rather upset.

The comments from the guy who brought the show back are very interesting (even if he was fired for being a horrible person to work with).
I would recommend reading the comments in full, but basically he wanted the first four episodes to be nostalgic and emulate life for us 90s kids. The world was safe and made sense. Then 9/11 happened and nothing was the same.
Episode 5 is supposed to be this show’s 9/11, and the rest of the season will be the fallout.

Well. Today's episode was something.

I left these last two episodes to watch back-to-back tonight as I'm not sure if I can wait another week for the season finale.

Re: [Disney+] X-Men 97
Are you talking about the ending? I wasn't expecting that iconic moment from the comics, but this season isn't pulling any punches. No idea how they're going to end this next week but I seriously hope they're already working on S2.
Regardless, overall it was like non-stop references to the early 1990s comics; great stuff to see on the TV!

Yeah, that's exactly what I was referring to. I remember sitting with my mouth agape when I read the original comic.Smoove_B wrote: ↑Thu May 09, 2024 11:56 amAre you talking about the ending? Wow. This last episode had a ton of great moments. But that last shot…
Hard to believe there’s just one episode left.

Looking for an answer free of spoilers except for the specific question: Which comic (storyline) was this based off of?

Re: [Disney+] X-Men 97
"Fatal Attractions" (for the ending and last few episodes). The season started with parts of "The Trial of Magneto" from ~1985.
Again, this season has been smooshing together stories that took close to a decade to unfold in some cases and they just rip through it in 28 minutes. That's not bad, it's just crazy how much stuff they're covering. And they're not lifting exact elements - sort of picking and choosing things that make sense for the story they're telling in the cartoon.

I'm still reading Marvel, and I'm coming up on some X-Men soon. I want to take into account whether I'm about to read the same content.
