I'm just following the guidelines from app. Tells me how much I can eat. I don't lie to myself. Some days it sucks. Today I am projected to exceed my budget by about 99 calories currently. That means I need to do about another 3000 steps before the day is done. And the budget is killing me. Today I got a bowl of ice cream, yogurt and granola, coffee with cream and sugar, a fried egg and cheese sandwich, and for dinner I will get a large plate of slow roasted petite red potatoes. Total calories will be 2,251 of my allotted 1,965. Stupid 600 calorie portion of ice cream. But I wanted it and I needed room in the freezer.

A couple of years ago I dropped a full 50 pounds. Life went sideways, depression hit, and I gained back about 30 of that. I've now re-lost about 25 (so I'm down to only 5 above my low numbers.) It's less that I'm doing anything special (I was already eating healthy) and more that I'm not stress eating on top of that the way I was.

I really, really need to get back to working out, as I was doing really, really well there for a while, doubling or tripling the recommended amount of exercise every week. I just need a brain breather for long enough to get over the hurdle of creating the routine.

Ok, I’m in.

LordMortis convinced me to try the calorie tracking app Lose It!, with the goal of losing 50 lbs by year end. I’m too fluffy and pretty sure GenCon walking may kill me. After failing that physical challenge, I plan on adding walking or treadmill time to get ready for next year.

I was down 10 lbs the last month before edging up over the July 4 holiday.

Woke up this morning back at 209.5. I suppose that was not a shock, given the huge weight loss of the last three weeks. And then there were three 7-elevens on my morning walk. That meant three free small slurpees. There went the entire caloric benefit of my walk.

It's funny how things align for us retired guys! I walked back from the community supported ag u-pick. It was a nice 3 mile walk at a good pace but totally counteracted because I walked past a hoagie shop and a water ice stand right at lunch time!

Hoagies are the death of me. I think a 9" cheese steak from my favorite place is about 1400 calories. Soooo good. Technically, they are within walking distance, but that would be about 5 mile round trip and my longest walks were about 4 miles before my accident. Doing 3.5 today was a stretch, but I needed bread... and a slurpee... and a slurpee... and a slurpee...

Pizza is my weakness. I’ll easily use my calorie budget by eating pizza all day when we order. My wife can’t handle the cheese anymore, and my kids would rather have chicken nuggets. So I have the pizza to myself.

Yeah, when I eat pizza, living by myself, I have to essentially budget a pizza day and then have a pizza that is around 2,000 calories. That ends up my breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Something that used to be a sitting for dinner... and something else, like a big coke or bread and dip or... something...

I'm looking forward to hitting a maintenance weight where I can let off the gas and a whole pizza will just be lunch and dinner or maybe even just dinner and I get a light lunch and breakfast.

I have a lot of weaknesses. Fried food never smells or tastes so good as when you are calorie counting. I can smell restaurant fried food literally from a half mile away when I'm walking. I can smell breakfasts frying from several houses away.

Petite red skin potatoes were $1.99 a for pound and a half. I miss potatoes. I cut back on them when I started getting more than one kidney stone a year. A pound and a half of petite red skin potatoes is about 500 calories and will fill me up for almost an entire day. I do have to add another 150 calories in oil to mix with seasonings and coat them but still. 650 calories, while not enough for a day, would be enough for me to get by on two days a week and not feel hungry all the time.

I can't believe how much I ate yesterday, and I'm not sure why I did it. Part of a subway sandwich, a chick-fil-a sandwich and frosted lemonade, a Texas Roadhouse petite sirloin and two cups a chili, a bag of pepperidge farms cookies, three cokes, some watermelon. Why? :doh:.

...and I'm jonesing to go get the Publix simply potato sour cream and chive bogo today before it expires, maybe some more bogo cookies :doh:

First week of dieting and staying under 100 carbs per day. I lost 6.2 pounds! Next week will probably slow down as the water weight will have shed off.

Had potatoes for a couple of meals last week which led to a big short fall. I've also been increasing my outdoor activity which I suspect contributed heavily to my week. 3 pounds a week for 3 week running is a bit too fast, I fear. Still, 15 pounds away from my goal. I think I'm going to shoot for maintenance weight for a while if/when I get there instead of re-evaluating. I suspect I'm more active than the app believes with rate of loss I've been experiencing and it's going to take some serious realignment to figure it out. I'll want to continue tracking, as not tracking will see me sliding into my habitual eating.

That's my current plan. I really think what worked last time when I was counting calories was primarily because I was reducing sugars and carbs so
much.

I lived on restaurant food for five days last week and didn't exercise so this is much better than expected. My goal for the summer of "comfortably below 185" is within sight.

To be expected. 3 pounds a week was not sustainable. Hopefully I'll make it to 203 by next week. Also, I cut back on walking last week. I have a diagnosed hernia, for which I am waiting a surgical consult. So rather than aggravating it by getting my steps in, I've cut back on my steps floor.

Parents met me for lunch today. They wanted Golden Corral. Not my thing but it's time with them. Had a 1500 calorie lunch (and has to stop myself, even as I'm not a big fan of the food) that plus my 110 calorie breakfast means I'm in for some hurt tonight. I'm already crazy hungry and have less 400 calories left to get me through the day. Buffet style food probably isn't the best thing to put in front of you no matter the quality or taste when you've been always hungry for most of January, February, most of March, April, May, June, and all of July to this point. I don't think heavy water intake's gonna cut it for the night. This was not the plan when I got out of bed.

My daily calorie intake is really beginning to suck, especially as I am not walking enough to build a small snack cushion any more. Knowing where I'm at, I once thought I would revise my goal at 189 but assuming I can meet it, I'm going to hold there and see how it goes. Less than 15 pounds to go. I'd be nice to keep at a 5 pound a month pace but I need to remember this is actually set for a half pound a week, not a pound or more.

Another week, another big loss. I'm pretty encouraged so far since this has been purely diet. Nothing crazy. Stopped the diet drinks. Cut way back on carbs. Cut back on fast food. I'm not being insanely strict, just making better choices.

Tomorrow will mark 201 days of calorie restriction. To celebrate, I'm going to have beers and BBQ at a meaningless Tiger's game. I don't doubt that it will 4-5000 calorie day. At my current weekly restriction that could set me back a month or more. :? I guess we'll find out. My weekly shortfall will likely by -2000 calories or more next week. I long for when I decide to splurge more than once in six months and it isn't' planned.

I'm about to start a job where I'll practically be living out of my van. I'm wondering how that's going to impact my weight. On the one hand I won't have a pantry or big frig anymore, on the other I guess I'll be more reliant on fast food and truck stops. :think:

Ugh, as my age advances, all I can think is "get out and keep moving." I think 30+ years of sitting will literally be the death of me and I will spend the rest of my life trying to undo those sitting years.

Absolutely. Every diet has to include occasional blowouts if it's meant for humans.

I saw 184.3 this morning, which is my lowest reading in 2-3 years. Unfortunately only Monday weigh-ins count. I chose Mondays because they're usually my heaviest day of the week, being right after the weekend. I'd love to notch a sub-185 reading this Monday because on Tuesday I'm going on another 5-day vacation. Nothing but restaurant food for almost a week, including our 40th anniversary dinner next Saturday night. I will not be making responsible choices that night.

Was surprised to find out I could only eat a burger and two dogs and some chips and some beers. I was still craving more calories but my stomach seems to have actually shrunk over the last 200 days and would have moved me to massive discomfort had I consumed more. My old work gave me $110 in gift certs to spend and the ballpark and I gave them to coworkers as swag did nothing for me and the urge to consume was denied by the urge to not feel like stomach and intestinal ass. I was only about 700 calories over yesterday. I'm sure if I did more than a day of eating what want, I would revert quickly to an endless intake but this week as a whole won't be nearly as bad as I thought. If I had planned I'd even still come in under weekly caloric allotment. That said, the morning weigh in was 4 pounds higher than yesterday's. I touched 201 earlier this week. This morning was 204.5.

Hear, hear! My 50-pounds lost included one 'screw it' day every week. It was my counter to temptation. "I really want [unhealthy thing]!" Instead of having to just ignore it, I could just choose to make that particular unhealthy thing for my 'screw it' day.

And the funny thing is, when you're eating less, you get less hungry, and you get full faster (when you're not stretching out your stomach every day, it starts to become less 'stretchy', meaning that it gets full quicker), so even a zero-controls 'screw it' day doesn't tend to result in gorging - there just isn't room in your gut to go too far overboard.
