Games Played 2021. Now with experimental title and tabletop!

Post by Blackhawk »

Here we go, 2021, a new start. Tell what games you've played, what you've finished, and what you've given up on! I've changed the title to make it more about what we're doing and to include games in progress, games abandoned, and so forth rather than just 'finished' games. Feel free to add other games - I don't see any reason not to include tabletop games in the list. If that picks up, we may need to move this to General.

Here are the previous Games Finished threads, edited for the first post:

2020 time! I finished quite a few last year, but also abandoned a bunch, too. I'm in a bit of a video game rut right now, and have been focusing a lot on tabletop stuff instead, so we'll see how this year goes.

Finished (PC unless specified):
  • Doom: Eternal
  • Half-Life
  • Half-Life: Opposing Force
  • Half-Life: Blue Shift
  • Arizona Sunshine (plus all DLC)
  • Zero Caliber VR
  • I Expect You to Die
  • Warplanes: WW1 Fighters
  • Halo: Infinite

Abandoned:
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (An amazing game that I can't wait to get back to, but I know I'll have ten times the experience in six months or a year.)
Playing:
  • Hidden & Dangerous 2
  • Sniper Elite VR
  • Various VR music/workout games (primarily Synth Riders, Supernatural, and Audio Trip, with occasional visits to Beat Saber)
Side Games (multiplayer, coop only etc):
  • Conan Exiles
  • Rainbow Six: Siege
  • Zero Hour
  • War Thunder
Tabletop Games

I'm proud to report that I began EVE Online around 12:05 last night, and I just beat it! All endings, 102%. They don't make 'em like they used to.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Finished
1) Portal - 20210105 - How the heck did I wait this long to play this? Holds up!
2) Portal 2 - 20210106 - How the heck did I wait this long to play this? Holds up!
3) Lightmatter - 20210107 - First person puzzler in the same vein as Portal, even pokes fun at Portal.
4) Batman Arkham Asylum - 20210110 - No idea why I bailed on this initially, but glad I got back to it.
5) The Turing Test - 20210111 - Easier than Portal 2 but still interesting and sometimes challenging.
6) Superhot: Mind Control Delete - 20210115 - Way more and better than I imagined
7) Detroit: Become Human - 20210116 - Very emotionally involved. I hope you like QTEs!
8) Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon - 20210117 - Like the opposite of Detroit, just silly action but fun for a bit anyway.
9) Alien: Isolation - 20210124 - Almost quit in the early hours but glad I stuck with it. Frustrating but intense and interesting.
10) Hitman 2 - 20210127 - Fun and challenging, but pretty short if you aren't interested in playing through missions multiple times for mastery.
11) Code Vein - 20210313 - Easiest souls-like ever, but still fun with a not terrible story.
12) Spider-Man: Miles Morales - 20210315 - More of the same, but with more melee powers.
13) Maneater - 20210319 - Objectively bad game, really enjoyed it.
14) Control - 20210320 - I... that... ummm... well... good but not 100% sure why I think that.
15) Outriders - 20210404 - It was a lot of fun. The different healing mechanics and powers kept things interesting, but not enough to bother with the endgame.
16) A Way Out - 20210418 - interesting story told through co-op gameplay with lots of co-op required elements. VERY simple though, almost to the point of walking simulator.
17) It Takes Two - 20210423 - co-op mandatory game with fun mini-puzzles throughout. 2-3x longer than A Way Out and a nice little story.
18) Days Gone - 20210502 - Too long, often unsympathetic protagonist, but still fun and worth playing.
19) Destroy All Humans (2020) - 20210506 - Very light and short but entertaining.
20) A Plague Tale: Innocence - 20210508 - Not much Innocence but quite a tale.
21) Gris - 20210509 - Beautiful, Confusing and Moving
22) Pathfinder: Kingmaker - 20210518 - Way too complicated for me, even on story difficulty. Good narrative marred by super technical gameplay.
23) Subnautica: Below Zero - 20210519 - A mere shadow of the original with a couple nice QoL tweaks. Worth a playthrough but doesn't live up to the original.
24) State of Decay 2 - 20210521 - Wow that was shorter than I imagined. I guess it's designed for multiple playthroughs.
25) Biomutant - 20210529 - Meh.
26) Thief Simulator - 20210628 - Way more satisfying than I expected. Puzzly stealthy kinda janky fun.
27) Metro Exodus - 20210702 - Better than my initial impressions, but still mostly ok.
28) Returnal - 20210713 - 93 deaths, 1 victory
29) Chernobylite - 20210731 - solid story, good gameplay
30) The Ascent - 20210802 - Lots of fun, thanks gamepass!
31) Dark Souls III - 20210808 - I finally finished a Dark Souls game!
32) Drake Hollow - 20210811 - odd little game and a bit short, but entertaining
33) Superliminal - 20210812 - short but mind-bendingly interesting puzzle game
34) Donut County - 20210813 - super short, but mildly amusing with a small puzzle element and the price is right (on gamepass)
35) Carto - 20210814 - interesting idea, a bit meh in the end
36) Hitman GO - 20210815 - finished but couldn't 100% on my own, such disappoint
37) Terraria - 20210825 - Late to the party, but glad to play the finished game
38) Psychonauts 2 - 20210828 - Glad it was on GamePass
39) Thief (2014) - 20210830 - Bought it the day it was released and abandoned soon after, it was nice to check it off but it deserved to be abandoned
40) Deathloop - 20210916 - Fun character and interesting gameplay. Lackluster story.
41) Marvel's Avengers - 20210925 - Good story, meh combat.
42) Far Cry 6 - 20211013 - Ubisoft open world. That says it all.
43) Quantum Break - 20211015 - Short, but interesting and a bit challenging
44) The Riftbreaker - 20211020 - Surprise for me, but really enjoyed it and will likely play again
45) Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - 20211030 - Surprise for me, but really enjoyed it
46) Styx: Master of Shadows - 20211102 - Decent stealth game, interesting story
47) Forza Horizon 5 - 20211107 - Calling the Hall of Fame finishing the game - lots more to do, but that's the main milestone I think
48) Kena: Bridge of Spirits - 20211118 - Short, fun with PITA souls-esque bosses
49) Life is Strange: True Colors - 20211119 - Short, beautiful, better than the second one.
50) Next Space Rebels - 20211123 - KSP-lite with a story. An interesting experience. Thanks Gamepass!
51) Kill it with Fire - 20211124 - A cute little game about annihilating spiders with a bit of puzzle.
52) Ori and the Blind Forest - 20111127 - Huge PITA platformer that was a lot of fun
53) Ori and the Will of the Wisps - 20111128 - Better than the original
54) Timelie - 20211129 - Puzzle game, could be called save scumming, the game. Interesting, but not great.
55) Journey to the Savage Planet - 20211204 - Across between No Man's Sky and Subnautica without any of the best parts of either
56) Factory Town - 20211207 - Like Factorio lite. A good bit too light for my tastes.
57) Terminator: Resistance - 20211225 - Unexpected, interesting, good experience.
58) Dysmantle - 20211231 - A kind of chill experience, fun but a bit grindy.

2020 - 34 games
2019 - 27 games
2018 - 15 games
2017 - 16 games
2016 - 16 games

Goal is to slow down a bit on the board games this year. Went a little nuts in 2020.

Games finished
- FF XIV (PC) - My “evergreen” game on this list. Completed through patch 5.5
- Nier Automata (PS4) - March 2 - A - Finished endings A and G, now working on 9S' playthrough, so there will be more. 9 hours (so far)
- Monster Hunter Rise (Switch) - April 2 - A+- improves on MH World in nearly every way. Movement felt better, the monster battles were perfectly balanced, progression made perfect sense, etc. I’d knock maybe a 1/2 point off for the “main quest” only taking about 18 hours, but that’s a minor gripe. Completed all the village quests, didn't feel like messing with multi-player. Awesome, awesome game. 40 hours.
- Mass Effect 1 (PS4) - May 17 - B- - A decent enough starting point, but definitely shows it's age. Feels sluggish and dated, but has an excellent story and sets things up for the rest of the series. 16 hours.
- Mass Effect 2 (PS4) - May 29 - A - Still one of the best RPG's ever made. The opposite of ME1, in that it has a so-so main story, but incredible companion and side quests. The improvement in every aspect from ME1 to ME2 was remarkable. 29 hours.
- Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance (PS4) - May 31 - B- - Lots of fun if you have fond memories of the original, but probably a grindy, boring slog if you don't. I'm in the former camp, and enjoyed it quite a bit. 9 hours.
- 7 Wonders: Ancient Alien Makeover (PC) - June 5 - B - A silly casual match-3 that was far more fun than it really should have been. 5 hours.
- Mass Effect 3 (PS4) - June 15 - B+ - Great story dragged down somewhat by the random questing structure and crappy ending. Still, playing through all three games back to back was a blast. 32 hours.
- Dark Alliance (PS4) - June 29 - C+ - Fun, but janky as hell and makes a terrible first impression. Almost gave up on it, but it got more fun the further I played. 10(ish) hours
- Trails of Cold Steel (PS4) - Aug 1 - A - A pretty standard old-school JRPG elevated by an absolutely amazing story. 42 hours.
- The Artful Escape (PC) - Sept 13 - A - An short but incredible visual and audio feast. 5 hours
- Diablo 2 Resurrected (Switch) - Oct 4 - B - Fun to revisit with a new coat of paint, but the systems show their age. 28 hours.

Currently playing
- Trails of Cold Steel II (PS4)

Abandoned Video Games
- Immortals Fenix Rising (PS4) - Quite fun, but the puzzles got too difficult and tedious.
- Warhammer 40k Inquisitor Martyr (PS4) - A super-boring version of Diablo
- Sakuna of Rice & Ruin (Switch) - Does a bunch of things (sidescroller, RPG, farming sim), but none of them very well.
- Diablo 3 (Switch) - Played through first 4 levels of Season, like usual
- KOTOR 2 (iPad) - Good RPG, but combat is SO dull now
- Atelier Ryza 2 (Switch) - Always wanted to try these, but never had. Should have stayed away, definitely not my type of JRPG.
- SWTOR (PC) - Got to level 50 and got bored. Again.
- Middle Earth: Shadows of War (PS4) - Hate the fact that the game gets progressively harder the worse you are at it.
- Grim Dawn (PC) - Always gets boring 15-20 hours in.
- Disco Elysium (PC and PS4) - Fantastic writing, but the fact you can spend 20 minutes in a dialog then immediately die because of an incorrect response and have to do the entire thing over again was tiresome after the 3rd or 4th time it happened.
- Trials of Mana (Switch) - Probably 3/4 finished, but it got incredibly dull
- Warcraft 3 (PC) - Fun to revisit, but I'm terrible at RTS
- Starcraft 2 (PC) - See above
- Hard Reset Redux (PC) - Surprisingly fun FPS, but didn't keep my attention very long
- Valheim (PC) - Gonna come back to this after it's out of EA
- Bravely Default 2 (Switch) - Promising start, but incredibly dull combat and story
- Nier Automata (PS4) - Burned out after the first completion
- Zelda BotW (Switch) - Tried, just can't do it.
- Outer Wilds (PS4) - Interesting concept, but too vague for me
- Doom Eternal (PC) - Fun, but I’m SO bad at it.
- Sword Coast Legends (PC) - Meh gameplay for such a cool setting
- Loop Hero (PC) - Interesting idea, but I couldn't get the hang of how to build effectively
- There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (Switch) - Interesting meta-game idea, but the "glue the cell phone to the cat" puzzles were obnoxious
- Super Mario 3D World (Switch) - Kids erased my save file on world 8. Sigh...
- Guild Wars 2 (PC) - Got to mid-game, got bored.
- Dragon's Crown (PS4) - A quick time filler while waiting for ME to come out
- Clap Hanz Golf (iPad) - A really fun iOS version of Hot Shots Golf. Didn't feel like keeping my Apple Arcade sub just for this though.
- Psychonauts 2 (PC) - feels like something that should click with me, but doesn’t.
- Torchlight 3 (PC) - a completely soulless version of Diablo. As generic and dull as it gets.
- Spider-Man 2018 (PS4) - got much further than last time, but I still don't care much for open world games
- New World (PC) - Definitely not my sort of MMO with a strong PvP and WvW component.
- Spiritfarer (Switch) - incredibly well done, but didn’t really hold my attention.
- Beast Breakers (Switch) - Interesting mix of RPG, pinball, and brick-breaker, but requires a ton of strategy and ended up feeling very random.
- Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (PC) - I just need to stop buying these CRPGs, they never click.
- Greedfall (PS4) - Janky and boring version of Dragon Age Inquisition.
- Guardians of the Galaxy (PS4) - Decent story, but the combat and exploration were meh
- Skyrim Anniversary Edition (PS4) - Fun for a bit, but I don't have the interest to run through all of it yet again.
- Journey to the Savage Planet (PS4) - Platforming and combat got to be too much for me.

New Board Games
- Four Against Darkness
- Altar Quest
- Mystic Vale
- Roll Player (w/Monsters & Minions xpac)
- Small World
- Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle
- Lost Ruins of Arnak
- Quests of Valeria
- Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza
- Jaws
- Survive: Escape From Atlantis
- Overboss
- Tiny Epic Tactics
- Middara Unintentional Malum: Act 1
- Descent: Legend of the Dark
- Dice Miner
- Fantasy Fluxx
- Marvel Villanous
- Destinies
- World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

Finished

Yakuza 0 (2/7/21) - I get how not everyone might like this game, but it came out of nowhere for me and I enjoyed it tremendously.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (3/22/21) - Too many puzzles and jumping at the right second to advance story. A solid "meh" from me
Star Wars: Squadrons (3/25) - Walking away after 3 hours. I went against my gut feeling on this one and purchased it anyway. I've enjoyed space flight shoot 'em up games before, but this one is not for me
Horizon Zero Dawn (8/13) - probably the best game that's not The Witcher I've played in years. 67 hours and I still need to to the DLC
Days Gone (10/28) - probably the best game that's not The Witcher I've played in years. This is the zombie game I'd been looking for

Usually I try to only have one or two games that are in progress. I'm failing miserably at the moment.

Finished
03/06/2021 - Dishonored 2
03/13/2021 - Half-Life: Alyx
04/02/2021 - Betrayer
03/??/2021 - Ghost Recon - Breakpoint (I think I'm done... They don't make it easy with this one. But I don't have any more main quests that I can see. And I'm kinda over the rest of it.)
05/??/2021 - Into the Radius VR - Completed storyline; still playing for fun.
05/??/2021 - Sairento VR - Completed all chapters; still playing for fun.
05/11/2021 - Battle Brothers - Orc campaign ended abruptly. But a win is a win.
05/23/2021 - Battle Brothers - Undead campaign defeated.
06/06/2021 - Battle Brothers - Noble War campaign defeated. (Pushing through to 2nd event...)
06/07/2021 - Deity Empires - Finally called after getting last achievement.
08/28/2021 - Ghost Recon - Wildlands (co-op)
09/02/2021 - Diablo III - Season 24 - Obtained the Feat of Strength for collecting all the Ethereal weapons
07/??/2021 - Eador - Masters of the Broken World - Finished ~10 shards/scenarios
09/06/2021 - Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes - Beat a large map; wanted to check out recent patch changes. Didn't notice much difference.
09/26/2021 - Far Cry 5
10/05/2021 - Rebel Galaxy - Fun ride. Makes me want to fire up Space Rangers again. Might keep it installed for a bit to dabble with. First time using a controller too.
10/30/2021 - Sniper Elite 4
11/05/2021 - Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts - Buggy and not really much fun. At least not if you try to do any of the challenges. Should have stuck to just sniping.
11/11/2021 - Thea: The Awakening - First game. Just went with easy while I learned it. Will likely keep it around for a while.
11/28/2021 - Thea 2: The Shattering - Finished marathon game (extended past first successful completion to collect extra points and achievements).
11/28/2021 - Arizona Sunshine - VR. Zombies. Fun little romp. Most of the time.
12/06/2021 - Dead Age

In Progress - Solo
Borderlands 2 VR - Pretty 'meh'. I suspect this one will end up abandoned.
The Evil Within - Struggling a bit with this one. The gameplay is horrible.
How to Survive
Darkest Dungeon
Prey

In Progress - Co-op
Ghost Recon - Breakpoint
Borderlands 3
Zombie Army Trilogy

Abandoned
Secret World Legends (was playing co-op but he hit a bug and no one ever responded to his ticket)
Destiny 2 (another co-op that my friend didn't have much interest in - though I did play it solo for a time)
Assassin's Creed III (may try to put it back to In Progress, but it just wasn't grabbing me)
Skyrim VR (because I'm a glutton for punishment... I really need to finish some of these before they end up on the abandoned list) ... and I got tired of my game
Steamworld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech - It's an okay game, but no real desire to "complete" it.
Fallout 4 VR
Space Rangers HD - Got enough to get my fix.

It's not that formal. If you say it counts, it counts.

Finished
  1. A Short Hike (Jan 1, PC, 13 golden feathers) 6/8
  2. Lieve Oma (Feb 11, PC): 30-minute walking simulator in which you're a kid walking through the forest with your grandmother looking for mushrooms.  (The title means "Dear Grandma" in Dutch.)  It's in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality, and I would have overlooked it had not the Gamers With Jobs podcast mentioned it.  It's pretty, but sleep-inducing.  It has a good message though I would have missed it had the credits not made it explicit. 2/8
  3. Astrologaster (Apr 28, PC, 8 letters of recommendation) 4/8
  4. Signs of the Sojourner (May 9, PC) 4/8
  5. Anatomy (Jul 4, PC) 5/8
  6. Mass Effect (Sept 24, PC, Legendary Edition, 67h 17m, Insanity difficulty, Level 28 Female Renegade Infiltrator) 6/8
Rating system:
6 to 8 = Potato
4 to 5 = Tomahto
0 to 3 = Let's call the whole thing off

Abandoned
  1. Mars Power Industries: Got this puzzler for free on iOS. After playing 10 stages, I'm still not sure what I'm doing. It's not really grabbing me.
  2. No Heroes Allowed: No Puzzles Either!: This is a match-3 spinoff of the Badman series. Clear blocks to summon monsters who will attack invading heroes. Capture the heroes and put them to work in Badman's mine. The heroes mine loot. Level-up your monsters with the loot so they can capture tougher heroes. And so on. It's free to play, but you can buy DLC to play longer, store more stuff, etc. It's cute and breezy, but just a levelling treadmill. After playing nine stages, I see no reason to waste time and money on it.

    Games played: 2006 (15); 2007 (14); 2008 (20); 2009 (23); 2010 (13); 2011 (15); 2012 (17); 2013 (25); 2014 (25); 2015 (9); 2016 (8); 2017 (9); 2018 (2); 2019 (22); 2020 (9)

I keep 150 Steam games ready to go. Often I look at that home screen and give up and watch a movie. I also tend to forget that Diablo 2/3, Starcraft 1/2, and Warcraft 3 are always available as well.

Finished:
6/10 Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise (PC) - Not a bad little adventure-lite game as long as you don't expect character development and clever dialogue with your room-to-room puzzles.
7/10 The Walking Dead: The Final Season (PC) - What idiot added the "new over-the-shoulder camera system...and scenes of unscripted combat" to ruin the finale of a long-running narrative game series?
7/10 Majotori (PC) - Great little nerdom trivia game with goofy little stories that will last you maybe four hours. I clearly don't watch enough anime.
8/10 Beyond a Steel Sky (PC) - Lots of great stuff going on here, but Revolution leaned hard into the feel and story and didn't really innovate with the gameplay.
7/10 Tsioque (PC) - Great animation, decent gameplay, but a little bit corny. A nice, short graphic adventure-lite with some reaction-based timed events and a bit of inventory puzzles.
6/10 Pneuma: Breath of Life (PC) - A seemingly cool first person perspective-based puzzler, but it runs like a stone carving, it's short and easy, and the philosophical musings don't really land anywhere.
9/10 Superliminal (PC) - Amazingly clever perspective-based first-person puzzler. Very much Portal-2-flavored, but not as replayable, and the narration doesn't work as well. Three hours fully worth it.
7/10 Donut County (PC) - It's good that I don't mind a short game, because as cute and clever as this little physics game is, it's over completely in two hours. Reminded me of Katamari Damacy.
8/10 Gorogoa (PC) - Incredibly unique puzzle mechanic with sliding panels of hand-drawn art that link and morph in ways to allow the character to move through the story, which is two hours.
8/10 DARQ (PC) - Shockingly unique and clever puzzle platformer, with excellent use of the macabre. Oddly enough, the free DLC levels got on my nerves, though.

FMV interactive movies I finished again:
Late Shift (PC) - I'll probably try one more time to find the missing main chapter or a new ending before I uninstall it.
The Shapeshifting Detective (PC) - Got a different outcome but I'm pretty sure I'm done with it now. I'll try Poe & Munro eventually.

The big fail is not that the list above is short, or made up of short games. That's normal for me. It's not that I've edited this post over 60 times, because hopefully you know by now that I'm clinically OCD and that explains a lot. The big fail is that after COVID boosted my playing in 2020, this year I was crippled by selling, buying, and renovating a house in the crazy, crazy housing market of 2021. It has taken eight months, half my equity, and all $80k of proceeds I netted on my sale. As a result, it looks like I'm heading into 2022 with Obduction, The Talos Principle, Max Payne 3, Remember Me, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic still all unfinished after a third restart each.

Sadly, it doesn't look like I've participated in one of these threads since 2015, when my gaming time took a nosedive due to a new marriage, baby, and house. "FInished" Fight in Tight Spaces Prologue twice, should be a fun game if you can control the deck building process, rather than everything randomly assigned to you. Who'd knew you can do a turn-based card-based martial arts tactical combat game? It's the cheesy ragdoll physics that made it so satisfying. First time I saw the endboss, he was in front of the door, so I jumped kicked him, then front-kicked him out the door. Next time I met him, he wasn't so dumb. I dodged his minions and took care of them, so he kept calling in more, 2 thugs at a time. I went in with 32 HP, but this guy does 16 damage per hit. And I misjudged one move and he got a good hit in. But I was able to weaken him by maneuvering him in front of his minions. And finally I got his minion to give him his death blow. May consider paying full prices for this game. Definitely 8/8 tentacles.

Previously reported in a different topic:

Gave up on Damnation, the game has no "hint" system so often I have no idea where to go.

Gave up on Trident's Wake, I should be playing SYNTHETIK instead.

Finished Train Mechanic Simulator 2017.

Previously played Stable Orbit, Learning Factory Alpha, Rover Mechanic Simulator, Skyhill, and Genesis Alpha One not sure if it's 2020 or 2021. :)

Currently playing MarZ, next will probably be Crying Suns, and Treasure Hunter Simulator

Finished MarZ a few days ago, It's a tower defense game with a few twists.

Was playing Star Crawlers in between. Put in 80 hours, level all 8 class characters to L30, finished the main plot, was able to overlevel (finish mission that supposedly required L33 even though characters top out at 30) and considered that to be enough for me, even though there are alternate endings and New Game Plus mode.

Tried Greed Corp, interesting take on turn-based, but sacrificing your land for gold to build weapons seems mostly a puzzle / pyrrhic victory. Just didn't quite hook me.

Playing:

Radio Commander -- an abstract wargame where you can only give orders to your units via "radio" and hope you chose right. Just finished mission 6 of 9. It's short, but it's not a full-priced game, and the fog of war is pretty interesting way of playing a wargame. We're so used to having all the stats and location available, spoiled by real-time intelligence.

Wanted to try Ram Pressure, a public beta of an alternate take on XCOM... alien refugee ships are crashing on earth, and terran mercs are fighting over the wrecks and survivors... and each other.

Wanted to finish Unheard, the audio puzzler and the other Chinese game, Detective Di.

Just finished Unheard. Turns out I was on my last case, and it's really meta, in a way, depending on which "ending" you choose. ;) There are 3 achievements tied to "choose the ending", and that's actually a lot of fun, as you kinda realize that one of the endings... is actually related to that last case you just solved! :D
Spoiler:
In the final case at mental hospital, "patient 68" has escaped, and now, two detectives wanted to interview all the patients to see if they knew why he'd do so. So you have the following cast of characters:

Elvira and Tony -- two cops

McMurphy -- patient... but is he faking it? For what?

Oscar -- the receptionist/admin (?)

James -- thinks he's an orderly, not a patient?

Emily -- watches a TV that's turned off?

Mr. Director -- thinks all the stage's a play and we are all players?

Klep -- a man with sticky fingers for phones... or similar devices

Jennifer and George -- two doctors that are on staff, but is one of them working for someone else?

Ray, the real orderly... or is he?

Maestro -- is he a real maestro of painting... or just a delusional old man?

Nellie -- claims to be a reporter trying to bust this place, but is now stuck in here... can she be trusted?

(Silver)Spoon -- genuine dissociative personality disorder (multiple personalities)

As you listen to the case, apparently "ghost" with a vast fortune and a price on his head is hiding here. But no one had seen his face, and he was able to use a bomb to kill his old crew and almost got away clean. So who is ghost? That's the case you need to solve.

And at the end, once you did solve that, the last one question was... "who are you?"

If you figured out, you are patient 68, and when you refuse more treatment, you grabbed the ashtray, threw it at the doctor's head, knocking her out, then escape the room. --- which is exactly what started the Mental Hospital case! ;) So you're created a timeloop, or it was all a simulation! :D You can choose to cooperate, or pick a different answer, which gets you the other achievements. If you just pick "detective", no achievement.
The voice acting is a little bit over-the-top, but useful when it comes to audio drama like this. Highly recommended, and requires multiple loops through the game to fully appreciate. 7/8 tentacles.

Giving up on Treasure Hunter Simulator, aka Hiking and Metal Detecting Simulator. Well, that was a bit tongue in cheek, but perfectly accurate. You play as a metal-detector and shovel guy somehow with permission from governments all over the world to dig up their national parks and legally keep their cultural treasures in YOUR displays, due to your archaeology pedigree or something. The game hit a bug in the Syrian Temple level, where it wants me to pick up modern stuff from the amphitheater. Except I've gone over amphitheater too many times, over every pixel. There is NO metal anywhere, and that's with the latest and greatest scanner money can buy. So I don't know how it wants me to finish the mission, and without that mission I cannot advance to the final two maps, which are presumably something like Rome or Greece or so on. So that's that.

Supposedly resetting the map may fix it, but it may also require me to redo the missions, which are already PITA to start with. As I already maxed my prestige and has the max equipment, and I'm not really a completionist, I've already spent 15 hours more than I should in this game.

Next up would be RAM Pressure, Detective Di, Duskers, Crying Suns, Trailmakers, or Forged Battalion.

Playing Crying Suns and Warstone TD.

Actually just "finished" Warstone TD and it's... an interesting mix of city management (sort of like an expanded version of HOMM style city, to optimize build efficiency), and TD, with some innovations like TD duel (you defend on one part of the map while trying to build units to get them past enemy's towers on the other half) and some very fancy tech tree that you can respec at any time among all three: warlord, sorcerer, and treasurer (with title being obviously different leanings). Not sure I like the art style, but it's charming.

Crying Suns is a space-based rogue lite with combat a bit like FTL, but turn-based combat that's somewhat inspired by Homeworld, maybe?, where you lead the final battleship of the empire trying to find out what happened after a post-apoc event that wiped out the AI (OMNI in the game) that humanity depended on. You go to each system and explore the planets, trying to stay ahead of the news that may lead locals to trap you, while you deal with threats and random happenings. Ground combat basically consists of picking the right officer, and pray to the RNG gods, while you steadily upgrade your weapons and squadrons of small craft, using the simple formula: fighters beat drones, frigates beat fighters, drone beat frigates. So you need all three in your fleet. As tech advances, you get variations, but same rule still applies. The ship combat system is interesting, in that each ship is apparently equipped with multiple hulls. Once you beat down enemy ship's outside hull, it will "blow off" all the panels, and keep fighting, as if the hull was restored. So you basically have to beat the ship several times, while making sure they don't do the same to you. Your officers can be assigned to weapons, engineering, or squadrons to lend their bonuses to the specific items in combat. It's a pretty good system. I just finished Chapter 1, and I get to pick a new ship in Chapter 2, but I'm not sure I want to, as it's basically a pirate ship that has the advantage of cheap drones, but little else. Good story so far, a bit reminiscent of Discovery's "The Burn". Will play later.

Okay, I'm done with Warstone TD. I've gone about as far as I can, playing the battles on challenge scenarios (you have 5 hp instead of 25, and enemy waves are longer) and some of these special demands are, IMHO, "excessively puzzle-like", deliberately force yourself to play a harder variation by depriving yourself of something, often something important. For example, when enemies send warlocks to heal his party, you get silence spell to prevent it. But can you win WITHOUT using the silence spell? Sure. But when they threw in ghost wolves, which can ONLY be targeted by novices (magic users) and they ask you to win WITHOUT novices... This requires you to use a LOT of spells and runes (i.e. direct magic) rather than your units, and since those have hard timeouts, this requires some OTHER spell (circle, which immediately makes all spells being cooldown available immediately), which doesn't seem to have any tactical uses, so these challenges are very... contrived.

Probably go back to Crying Suns, or try Trailmakers. And maybe get started on Hardspace: Shipbreakers, and maybe Duskers.

Trying Trailmakers, it's a sandbox game that have you build different vehicles to explore the planet, find all the parts, so you can build a spaceship and get rescued. It's cute, but it's really needs a bit more handholding, IMHO. The map shows some parts... that are stuck 1000 meters in the air (apparently this planet has floating islands) so they can't be obtained until I got enough parts to take to the air.

Right now, I have just obtained enough parts to build an amphib car so I can explore the nearby islands and get THEIR parts that can be reached from the ground, and there it's a little bit like Besiege except no violence, just a puzzle to grab the item without falling off a cliff or such.

-----

Got enough parts to build the submarine, but also found a way onto part of the island, but having some problems figuring out what they are asking for, as pushing huge boulders off the cliff makes it roll where I don't want it to. :D

-----

Found a map that tells you where each item will be located. It doesn't tell you how to get to it, so it's not a cheat. You figure that out yourself.

I have the hover pads to make a flyer, but I don't have the gymble thrusters to make it useful. Will try to make monster truck and other things

-----

Spaceship is 89% complete, but the pickup is getting impossible. I think I have to design my own heavy lift solution

They have a couple different flyers, but other than the prop plane and the gyrocar the rest are almost impossible to control. The hovercraft has no speed at all, relying on mini-thrusters. And since hovercraft is on the ground, it has NO FRICTION, and thus, you are always sliding here and there if you're on a slope. No station-keeping possible. It's VERY difficult to use, and is not that much faster than a regular land vehicle, which is already amphibious.

There is a helicopter, but it's unstable as heck, even worse than the submarine. You can take off, then suddenly the nose dips, then when you correct that, the tail dips, and next thing you know you're on the ground upside down. Never mind forward flight. It also has no magnet to get stuff.

That pretty much leaves the gyrocar... Which is a seat strapped to four gyrojets... Which ALWAYS points down, so it will not crash unless you turn off the jet. THe problem is there is TOO MUCH power from the jet... You always go higher, so you have to turn it off, and on, like playing flappy bird. And since it relies on thrusters, it has no reverse. It only goes forward or turns. This makes precise maneuvers almost impossible. The good thing? It has a magnet carrier underneath, for the "small stuff". Larger stuff won't fit underneath, but *can* be moved if you manage to use the gyrojet to basically jump on top of it. It won't be able to go higher taking a "cube" load, and in fact, will sink as soon as you get it to move, but often, that's all you need it to do: get from a pedestal 100 meters in the air to the ground and achieve a soft landing.

Things get superdicey when you encounter "volatile power cores". They are red, and if you bump them wrong, they go kaboom. And a hard landing in in gyrocar definitely qualifies. But unfortunately, it's the only vehicle to get this power core off the pedestal. Tried at least two dozen times. I think I got lucky, in that I someone managed to drop the core JUST before I crashed and died. And somehow, the core did NOT go boom. I respawned back on the pedestal, but this time, without needing to land super-gently, I was able to land back next to the core, picked it up by driving over it, and took it to the salvage beacon without further incident.

I think I need to redesign the gyrocar so it still uses 4 jets but spread out further apart, and maybe add some extra thrusters and propellers so the while thing is "balanced" and much easier to pilot. On the other hand, the game is started to get a bit tedious. I think I have about 6-8 items left to gather for the ship, and that's about it. There are of course, lot more items. But the truth is, I'm getting a bit tired of this game already.

-----
Another thing... the game is sorta cheating, by giving the template cars parts that you don't have so you can't replicate.

Some of the template vehicles have a "hinged" magnet, so that you can "stow" the item being carried instead of leaving it near the ground to be bumped. Monster truck, for example. The magnet usually is horizontal, but can be tilted to -45 downard, or +90 (pointing straight up). That's 135 degrees of travel. However, the fingers that you *do* have, for steering hingers, only has 60-90 degrees of travel, only good for driving wheels.

The "stowing" of items also makes a funny scene if you are trying to pickup larger items. The items you need to pick up are small, medium, or large. Small items everyone can handle. Medium items may be a bit iffy for subs, as the sub will not be able to keep horizontal. In fact, the best way to move such by sub is... don't. Drag it to shallow water, and use Monster truck (which is also amphib) instead. Monster truck has large pontoons that can stay float even with the item stuck to front. A sub cannot go forward with nose low in the water. I ended up dragging the item BACKWARDS across half a map, only to lose the item when it rolled off the beach. I ended up going back and switching to monster truck instead to carry it across the map on water.

And when it comes to LARGE items, even monster truck have problems. as it's too big for the hinge magnet to handle. You can move the hinge, but the truck gets moved instead, or the part breaks. A gentle movement will probably get the item just barely scraping the ground, giving you enough power to move it with monster truck tires that has decent grip, though spike wheels are also available now. The problem is a lot of the game world is NOT flat, and if your magnet breaks, or you have to let it go to reattach, the "ball" (large item) can roll away from you.

Another annoyance: item that rolled off too far from you, are considered "lost" and the salvage operation was "reset" (put back to original place). However, how far is considered lost varies greatly. Once, a sub lost the cargo it just pushed onto the beach because it rolled six times into water that's barely twice the sub's length. Another time, the gyrocar accidentally dropped the volatile core on the plaza with the salvage beacon before dying, and respawned, well over 100 m away. Had to fly back there, land properly and drag the core to the salvage beacon, no reset then.

-----

Spaceship 93%, about 80% of all parts claimed, maybe 50% of all the gold deposits. Designed my special lifter with 6 hover pads and 6 gyrojets for lava area pickup. It can "land" on lava, hover and move up to the item, pick it up, then engage gyrojets for liftoff and get out of there. Not very stable, and a PITA to drive, but it works well enough.

Had to use a gyrocar for volcano pickup. One of the hardest piece to grab was inside a volcano, several hundred meters up, then several hundred meters down. AND it's a volatile core of course. Actually picked it up a few times, but somehow botches the landing. Seems gyrocar takes a second to ramp up, and in the first second or two you can achieve a proper hover, so the trick to descedning in a gyrocar is to turn off power, achieve a glide path, then on power, slow rate of descent, and try to time it just as you reach the ground. Since a hard landing and the core goes boom. Managed to get it safely landed. I think I have maybe 3-4 spaceship parts to go. But pretty sure that would require the last non-spaceship vehicle: the cloudcopter.

-----

My brain no longer wants to process this game as some of the physics puzzles are getting ridiculous. Latest puzzle: get a LARGE item off a 1200 meter high island in the sky, get it to LAND near a beacon, WITHOUT it rolling into the ocean, as it's too steep to pull it out. It's too heavy to move with the sub. With a medium object my sub can to a backwards tow, but with this, with the magnet at the head, sub is now nosing straight down into the water. The monster truck is on the surface, can't get the power to move it if it's shallow enough, and attempt to move the hinge resulted in damaged truck. Spend 30 minutes on this, decided to let it reset back into the sky. Maybe I can push it a certain way to make it land on land, not coast, and not have it roll somewhere like into the ocean. The OTHER possibility is to build a lift platform that CAN lift this thing, but I suspect that may not be possible, not with the engines I do have, although I do have 'dragon jet'.

-----

Using the super-lifter I devised I was able to get those huge parts off the sky islands and land them safely, though in one or two cases they were simply dropped but managed to rolled into a beacon?!? The final part, powered tailfin, I was able to grab with just the gyro car, as I had modified it with an addition... two dragon jets on the sides, thrust directed earthwards. So basically the gyrocar can ascend this this config, while the gyrojet allows for a nice soft landing as it has a slow sink-rate now with it on due to weight of the dragon engines. If I want to go down in a hurry, turn both OFF, and the whole thing goes into a power dive. Activate gyrojet and achieve a pretty soft landing. Ta-da! Mission accomplished... escaped the planet.

I am not really going back. I got I think 125 out of 164 parts, and some fo the parts are really... for sensors, logic gates, and other fancy stuff.

Bard's Tale IV Director's Cut
I waited until this release was on sale, given the negative reviews of the initial release. I didn't really know what I was getting except: improved gameplay. Apparently, there was also a new dungeon!
The DC version is definitely what I would call a good game. Solid execution and story. Good party interaction - though cosmetic, still welcome. I would have appreciated a party management ability more akin to Wasteland 3 but, perhaps, that was not possible if the latter built upon the former.

I thought that the battles offered a good balance of "I know how to take these guys/How do I beat these jerks?". The merchants could have levelled equipment better in the mid to latter game stages; rarely was my equipped gear worth spending the ridiculously high $ count to upgrade ... until at a later point in the game when I was floating in cash and a one-point upgrade was worth throwing big bucks at.

Crafting was OK. I liked the recipes but not the restricted access to critical ingredients.

Lots of secrets that I did not find. Do not (personally) feel that a replay is warranted.

For the extra dungeon: nicely integrated to the main storyline, but I could not beat the boss even after levelling enough to take down the final game boss . So, no dwarven key for me to unlock all of those wonderful, beguiling chests :)

As for the final dungeon, after the point of no return, you find tonnes of great equipment that you can't sell (no vendor) and challenging battles - that you can't change up your approach to as your party is set and can't be changed. You can redistribute points to an existing party member but can't swap out a rogue for a practitioner, for example.

Overall score is a: recommend.
If you're looking for a similar, inspired-by game, you would't go wrong by checking out Operencia: The Nomad Soul which, imo, takes the inspiration and creates something new basing it on Hungarian mythology.
So sayeth the wise Alaundo.

Far Cry 4 is in the bag. Went to the 'Net and the 'Tubes to see the possible endings.

Didn't finish Shangri-La, as I could never survive the third round of fire raven nonsense, but other than that, I finished almost everything else.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

That almost matches my experience. Though I feel like I made it to the last round of the raven. Where you had to actually fight the damn thing (which may be what you mean). As I recall it was about perfect timing in order to hit the damn thing and prevent it from attacking. One mistake and I'd have to start over. I tried a handful of times and then decided I'd done enough.

While feeding all the beasties out back I let a nice big fart. The smell followed all the way back to the house. It's like it was my baby and felt abandoned.

abandoned Jewel Quest - not super play-balanced, and starting in the second round (out of five) gets very grindy and tedious due to the 'black mask' tile. also easy, because of this, to run out of moves (thus losing a life) or to put the board into an unwinnable state. you can spend minutes trying to clear out a particular blocked area, only to have it immediately blocked again. Jewel Quest II handled this particular mechanic in a better way and therefore is more fun (well, as fun as a match-three game can be).

Oh wow, I haven't thought about Jewel Quest in years. Used to play the hell out of that game.

Let's see... Played...

Played a bit of Phantom Doctrine, was interesting for a couple missions, now feeling a bit... meh. Doesn't quite scratch my tactical combat itch.

FInished Book fo Demons, a Diablo tribute game that's also a bit of card-based resource tracking and good estimate of game length.

Finished Forged Battalion with a trainer. It's HORRIBLY hard RTS with one major schtick: you can customize your units based on what tech you've unlocked and chosen in your faction tech tree.

Finished Zombie Army Trilogy, way too hard even on solo, only finished it with a trainer set to God mode.

Abandoned Hotel Giant (bought the Giant trilogy, turns out I already have Transport Giant, so this was kinda bad deal, since basically I bought only ONE playable game) Hotel giant was too buggy. Will try Industry Giant II later.

Finished PuzzleTronics, a cute swap-the-tiles puzzle using electrical components as motif (the electrical circuits don't quite follow Ohm's law). 60 levels for $2.00 is not a bad deal.

Abandoned/completed WH40K Flight Command, the game just doesn't feel very engaging, being a WH40K take on Flight Commander 2.

Finished Aven Colony, where 7 different difficulty levels means I don't need a trainer, even though the game is overwhelmingly complex (too many plates to keep spinning) for most people.

Finished Crying Suns (took at least one crew to the end) though I don't think I want to play it to the end a couple more times that badly.
