New Frontline Assembly album "Mechanical Soul" dropped this morning. It's gorram fantastic.

Very much a throwback to the Tactical Neural Implant era with dark electronic soundscapes and nary an electric guitar to be found (with one exception).

I like the sounds coming out of my speakers but it hasn't grabbed me on first listen, which is usual for FLA. I do really like Barbarians though. Then I looked up who was doing vocals on that track and realized it was Jean-Luc De Meyer (Front 242), so no wonder.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

I kinda love it.

As much of a Danny Elfman fan as I am, that song did nothing for me.

That's probably my least favorite track on the album. Mostly because the original was SO much better.

I'm generally not a fan of hardcore, but when it has a death metal tinge, I'm all in.

Especially when it's pure distilled fury, like this one is.

Paul Leary from Butthole Surfers is coming out with his sophomore solo album. His last one came out in 1991. Today has become my new birthday.

Is it just me or is it LSD in here?

No really, that’s their name.

Not a bad tech-death album though.

Really enjoying the new Tribulation album that came out last week. It's not quite as "sing along" catchy as their previous efforts, but it's still really damn good.

Thanks, I didn't know when that was coming out. Other than the singles, I'm really enjoying the last few tracks in particular.

I don't know why 99% of epic/atmospheric black metal is based on Tolkien, but it is. This is one of the good ones:

Goddess

I never realized that they were essentially studio band made up of middle-aged men with production/writing experience that were looking for female lead - trying to recreate something like Debbie Harry and Blondie. Could have been a total disaster, but they found the right woman.

i thought they were pretty transparently a 'manufactured' group. saw Garbage a few years ago and Shirley made the comment of 'we're one of the few bands of the 90s still around!' and i was like... ok, _technically_ a band... but they were always a studio-centered contrivance. Butch Vig has a pretty lengthy production resume

Oh yeah, they never hid it. I'm saying, I never realized it. I was at college (SEE: No cable TV) so all my music came through college radio. There's an entire generation of bands I have very limited visual memories of simply because unlike stuff from the mid 80s through the early 90s (my teen years), I wasn't mainlining the MTV. It is pretty impressive how well it worked out for them, regardless.

You might have been the cool teen, like Lord Mortis. Or older and more aware (like Lord Mortis). I have deep audio/visual memories of so many 80s and early 90s bands from MTV. But after 1992 or so, it's mainly audio memories. The visuals are associated with where I was or whatever it was I was doing at the time that music was playing. For me, Garbage invokes basements parties and cheap beer.

Caladan Brood did an entire black metal concept album about "Malazan's Book of the Fallen". While I didn't care much for the books, this album is fantastic.
