Indisputable Fact: Chrono Cross was the best video game soundtrack ever.

I think I often remember a good game score better than the game itself, yet I rarely listen to game soundtracks on their own, unlike film ones. I think a lot of the Japanese RPG scores excel at creating atmosphere without being overly memorable. The themes certainly can be, but they're often also a little overblown, or repetitive in the case of battle music, etc. That's just my own experience of course... and I haven't played a lot of Japanese RPGs in years. I have vague warm memories of Chrono Cross, but it was never what I expected it to be. The Final Fantasy Tactics score is, of course, amazing. And then there's this, which imparts an amazing feeling of nostalgia blended with foreboding:

Xenogears: The One Who is Torn Apart

Some of my other favourite game scores, some more independently listenable than others:

Shadowrun (SNES): Maria Mercurial Redux

I wish I could visit that world.... This game's score is immediately recognizable as being of its era and system, but I find it to be so evocative of the game's setting.

Fallout 2: City of the Dead

This track has always made my hair stand on end. Listening to a few seconds of the first two games' scores is enough to make me want to play them again, no matter how dated they are.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Here is a rare cut from Tom Petty that he played live in the early days, but never made it onto a studio recording:

last year I bought a "lifetime" subscription to "12 minutes", basically audio of book summaries on various topics. Some of them are kinda interesting. And since I often play audio at 2x speed I can easily go through two dozen books a day. :D

New album from Ruins of Beverast has been a fantastic surprise. They're a great combination of goth, death, and black metal. Think Sisters of Mercy meets Emperor by way of Type O Negative.

I listen to my podcasts on 3x. :D

They have technology to speed up the content without appreciably changing the pitch. It's VERY handy when you listen to as many podcasts as I do. I find audiobooks I had to slow it down to 2x though for comprehension.

If you use the Video Speed Controller plug-in for Chrome you can speed up streaming video as well. I use this to watch reality shows and other "unessential" content I want to see but don't necessarily want to spend 45 minutes on. They use the same kind of trick where they can speed it up without appreciably changing the pitch.

It takes some getting used to at first, but once your brain adapts to it you save a ton of time.

Really enjoying cEvin Key’s new solo album. It doesn’t push any boundaries (feels like the equivalent of industrial “easy listening”), but is really well done. Plus, I’ll listen to pretty much anything with Edward Ka-Spel in it.

Oh wow. That sucks, but 30 years is a long time.

To try and balance the hardcore edge Skinypupy brings ( :D ), I will counter with my unending love for Counting Crows. In this video, I count one (sorry for the bad joke - she's not even visible!). One upshot of being home so much is deep-diving into my music catalog. I'm currently only a bender with them.

Maybe next year, maybe no go

I recommend starting with Pelagial, a concept album about a journey to the depths of the ocean. Starts light and breezy near the top, and ends in crushing darkness. It's a personal Top 10 album for me, and contains one of the legit best riffs EVER (riff starts at 2:03, but the whole song is brilliant).

Their latest album "Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic / Cenozoic" was excellent as well.

I never realized that they were essentially studio band made up of middle-aged men with production/writing experience that were looking for female lead - trying to recreate something like Debbie Harry and Blondie. Could have been a total disaster, but they found the right woman.

We all have albums and/or songs that will instantly transport us back to a specific time and place, and often overwhelm with nostalgia.

This is one of those for me.

Very true, and oddly this was doing exactly that for me on Youtube right now.

That whole album is like a time capsule to 1991/92. Whereas the song "Time Capsule" by Sweet has me spinning back to 1993. Weird, i know.
