Another fun Stockton fact:

Richard (of Declaration fame) was the only signer who recanted. He was captured by the British and placed in a prison ship, and the experience broke his health (as prison ships were intended to do). He signed a paper rejecting American independence.

Congress later voted to forgive his recantation as it was made under duress. I guess this is why there's a rest stop named after him on the NJ Turnpike.
Huh, I thought that Richard Stockton didn't actually recant but was required to stay out of the war after being paroled.

I thought about mentioning the rest area in my last message. I drive past it every time I go visit my mother. I live near exit 14 and I usually take exit 7 when I go there. The rest area is between 7 and 7A.

Was that before or after he was captured by the British? :D

When I was 12 I spent one of the most miserable weeks of my life stuck in a 1920s hotel turned homeless shelter in Stockton. Central California summer temps, one window, no AC, cast iron bed with a mattress just as old, one bathroom per floor, and the stomach flu.

(I know that doesn't count, but dammit, I want to play, too!)

I remember as a kid riding in the "back back" luggage compartment of our Volkswagen. If seat belts were invented we sure as fuck weren't using them.

Seatbelts been around since before I was born but no laws back then. As a kid in the 70s we rode in the back of pickup trucks. I would lay in the back window of dad's car and sleep on rides...where the speakers are. My best friend's dad had a pickup with a camper top on it. He'd pick us up...Im talking backroads not main roads....and we'd leave the camper window up and the back gate down and sit on the gate with our legs hanging off and ride home like that as teenagers..

In the 80's a friend had a Datsun pickup with a camper shell. Since it really only held two people up front we'd often end up with people riding around in the back in Houston.

One my friends once hauled 6 people to an event in a VW Beetle by stuffing 3 in the backseat and one in the front trunk.

Fortunately it was a very short drive.

This morning I renewed my subscription to the AP Stylebook Online on my work laptop, using my work email address and paying with my company Amex, because that's something I use every day. A few minutes ago I logged into Facebook on my personal desktop...and immediately saw an ad for the AP Stylebook Online. I keep my work and personal lives separate on these two machines and they only share the same home network. Well done, FB adbot.

Hey Stimpy
Supposedly at first the message is going to freak u out, but it comes as no surprise.
When you visit websites for grown-ups don’t be shocked at infecting ur device, as well as at the fact that someone can switch on your webcam and film your close act with your hand.
How is ur hand? Still not sick of ur knob job?
The instructions are straightforward.
On meeting my claims, you will never hear of me again.
U give money to me, and I won’t share ur personal video clip with ur contacts from electronic mail or publish it on the web.
I am gonna live up to the pledge in case you neglect my requisitions.
You can contact anyone u wish, but no one is able to help u.
I reckon 48 h will be enough for settling the financial question. (I will be notified when you read it).
Do not try to get to me, this address is going to be deleted on emailing the notification.

OH NO!!!!!!!
MY CLOSE ACT AT HAND IS GONNA BE EXPOSED!!!!!

My #1 wish list item of all time is on sale. I first saw it in 1978, the first time I ever asked to see a movie in the theater, and I was amazed by it. I've always wanted one.

Now I just need to scrape up a few thousand dollars.

Apparently they were doing renovations on the roof. Who knows if that's related, but that's terrifying. If you look closely at some of the pictures you can see half rooms with beds hanging out.

Wow.

Demo companies do a lot of work to have such a rapid and clean collapse.

That just cannot be roof related... gotta be foundation supports failing for some reason.

Swamp or sink hole?

I can’t even imagine bad concrete or steal would fail so uniformly.

Left my credit card with the packaging of the food I bought on the way home last night. I did quick grocery before coming home to WFH the 2nd half of the day. I had to pay... cash for groceries. $60. Now I remember why I carry cash. I think that is more cash in one outflow than I have spent in the last 18 months or more combined. If I do that twice more I will have to visit an ATM. My account suggests it's been 21 months since my last trip to the Automatic ATM Machine.

Also, groceries, nahhht getting any cheaper.

Since getting up today Ive smelled what smells like heated oil....like thin machine oil or a motor running hot. I only smell it hear at the pc in front of my oscillating fan. I smell it a little in the next room. Ive checked and checked and cant find the source. Id swear it must be the fan but I turn it off and smell nothing from it. its not even warm to the touch. Strange.

What did the surimi stick impressionist say?

I'm artificial.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Stores keep using cheaper and thinner plastic bags. Ive had a lot rip or stretch. Lost items because of it. But one of my local places has a new thick plastic bag with good handles that dont cut into you. And surprisingly its a Dollar General store.
