My sister-in-law brought an exceptional Key Lime pie... Between that and the ice cream cake at the start of the holiday weekend, I may be starting from scratch.

Note that memorial day weekend is the celebration of 4 birthdays for our extended family we don't just go all out for the holiday.
That means you're down to 120 and trying to get back to 140, right?

Is it ok if it's a trophy for 2nd place in a work volleyball tournament?

ON a related note, I've decided to see if I can get down to 135. Is that better?

Thanks! I have the advantage that I had a lot to lose, which means I naturally burn more calories just from pumping blood through the extra miles of veins and carrying around the extra million pounds.

You know, that's the funny thing about body weight workouts (body weight squats, push-ups, bridges, planks, etc.) when you're losing weight. With any other strength workout you start out low, then add weight until you're lifting more. With body weight training, you start high and then decrease what you're moving around as you go. My push-ups now require significantly less strength than they did before. My planks involve my core holding a lot less weight, like someone took an entire bag of dog food's worth of weight off of my back.

At least my weight is super stable. Which is disappointing, because I've been pretty active.

The other day, my daughter saw a picture on FB of her cousin and step-grandfather. That cousin is pregnant with twins, and looks like she swallowed a beach ball. My daughter ignored this and pointed to the step-grandfather and said "look, daddy! He has a beer muscle just like you!"

Goal: 190.0
So by cutting my running to once a week, not doing any strength training, and eating terrible, I've managed to lose half a pound.

I don't know what's going on other than like Kraken my weight just stays locked into this narrow 5-pound window and moderate effort or lack thereof doesn't make much of a difference either way.

I am changing things up for July though. I signed up for an exercise challenge at work to do 45-minutes of exercise per day from July 1 - July 31. They are tracking it with FitBit/Apple Watch, so it's not totally honor system. If you miss a day, you are allowed to make up for it, or do extra in a day to count towards future days you may miss. This does not have to be high-intensity - cycling, yoga, walking all count.

I feel like lack of consistency is what's keeping me in this 5-pound purgatory, and I'm hoping doing a little something every day is going to be better than my current swings back and forth between doing a lot and doing nothing.

On the plus side, I went for a run tonight and I haven't lost a ton of cardio. While I'm not quite hitting the 3 miles I peaked at, my pace has greatly improved and I'm not really struggling. I feel like I've still got a good foundation there to build from.

I had a big plateau there, mostly caused by things getting really, really busy at home. I kept up with the minimum number of minutes of activity per week, but had a few weeks where I wasn't able to get in all my workouts, partially due to messy schedules, but mostly due to pain issues. I was doing some heavy work around the house that messed with my back, and I've been having some trouble with my ulnar nerve that has messed with my strength training.

Now the heavy work is done, and I've modified my strength training in a few ways (like swapping regular curls for hammer curls to reduce the pressure on my wrists.)

I also adjusted my daily pre-workout and my post-workout stretching. Things had gotten to the point where the workout was taking an hour and a half per day, and that wasn't sustainable. I made the decision to allow myself to separate the pre-workout from the workout (it isn't a warmup, just a few exercises I do daily regardless of the nature of the main workout that day that usually take about 12-15 minutes.) That means that as long as I get four of them in per week, I can do them on a different day from my main workout, or when I have a few minutes to kill on a workout day. Then I went from doing a full set of stretches every day to spitting them into two groups (one mostly back/upper body, one mostly lower body) and alternating them. The two changes took half an hour off of the daily commitment.

Yikes, wrong way. Oh well, I nearly hit 191 last week, so at least I backed down from that peak.

After the hottest June in history we are on track for the wettest July (already at #3 with two weeks left to go). The summer has not been conducive to walking, or much of anything else outdoors.

I haven't been tracking my weight closely but it's been all over the map. Bouncing between 198 and 203. It seems the more exercise I do, the more my weight goes up, so I have to assume that's muscle weight.

My wife and I started walking 2-3 miles every evening, however, so I'm hoping that consistency will start paying dividends. So far in July, thanks to the exercise challenge I've been participating in at work, I've done at least 45 minutes of activity per day at "fitness zone" heart rate.

Well... it happened. I dusted off the Wii Fit balance board and put in new batteries. I climbed on top and it laughed at me before making that exhausted sound like when anthropomorphic cars run out of gas in classic cartoons.

I'm literally too heavy for the balance board. As in I get an error message and then it reboots. The internet confirms the sensor limit is 330lbs. I knew I was at my all-time heaviest. I just didn't know by how much. And I still don't, as we don't have a proper scale. But pre-pandemic, I don't think I've weighed this much since I was in my early 20s when I hit 327. It doesn't feel good. I'm starting to experience some concerning health side effects (I'm 36 and it obviously starts to become harder to turn things around beyond this age), and I've gone from a 2X to a 4X in collared shirts. I'll save the rest for the General Health thread.

It's the last day of my vacation. All I can do is start now, start again. Big things have small beginnings, and all that. Going to boot up Ring Fit Adventure for the first time and see if I can fit the thigh band on my thick fucking leg.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Our epic miserable summer drags on. AFAIK it's still the third-wettest July ever, but we've got 11 more days to accumulate another 2" and take the crown. There was only one day this month (so far) without at least a trace of rain. Today might become the second one...so of course it's 90 degrees and humid. My "lawn" is a field of toadstools. This is going to be my lowest mileage since I started keeping track.

Haven't updated in a bit but despite eating HORRIBLY I'm down to 198.0. The stress and work of the move helped offset the bad eating decisions. Now that we're settled in, I'm hoping to get back on a regular schedule.

One complicating factor is that the new place has a gas range and we can't get propane for another 3-4 weeks due to the backlog. So we're going to have to get a bit creative with things we can cook in the oven or put on the grill. I'm also thinking of maybe buying one of those tabletop style griddle/hibachi type things so we can cook stir fry, breakfast foods, etc, in the meantime.

I'm leaving this afternoon for a 4-day vacation that will be long on eating and drinking and light on exercise, so I just need to stay mindful and restrained. Which might be hard, since it's my first vacation in 2 years and it's only four days.

Another week of heat and rain kept me mostly sedentary yet again. My weight's been bouncing from as low as 187 to as high as 191, but keeps settling into the middle of that range.

If my scale is correct..and I dont think it is...its very old.....Ive lost around 20 - 25 lbs in 6 months to 7 months. The numbers are not spot on but more approx. I went from 224 to 216 in 3 months or so. Then now after another 3 months Im about 201 or 202. My normal is 188 or there bouts.

Im not exercising or moving any more than I was. Pretty stationary life in my chair. Ive cut way down on eating. Ive halved or more my intake of chips, cola, candy, salt, and meats. Im hoping to cut out all extra salt one day soon. I will have the occasional chip or meat or cola. Plan to cut out candy. I eat very little per day but dont feel hungry or starved. Im not weak.

My worst fat reserve seems to be my tummy. It wont go away good. I need to add in light exercise like situps and leg lifts. Stuff to work my core. Would help both my back and my stomach I think. Was waiting to do that as my back has been killing me for months now. Hoping that losing some weight first will make exercise easier.

My weight since I was in my teens I was 186 and muscular. In my 20s I a skinny ass 141 to 180. In my 30s I stayed around 195 - 205. In my 40s I was 200. When my wife died I lost to 187 and it was a perfect weight but no muscle. Then with Covid winter I gained to 225 and stayed there until this year when I put effort into modifying my eating. I want to be 190< .....185 would be my ideal weight. Used to be my weight was stable no matter what I ate or how much I ate. Now that Im 50+ that is no longer the case it seems.

Danger! Danger! Situps are bad. Crunches are bad. Especially if you have back problems like you and I. They will cause serious harm. Not only are you straining your back, but you're working the front of your core only. The best metaphor I've heard is to imagine a tall antenna tied down by for guy wires, one on each corner. Now, loosen three and over-tighten one. That antenna is your spine, the wires are your abdominal, side, and back muscles. Sit ups and crunches work one of the four, and you'll end up pulling your entire spine crooked. And while we're at it, never do toe touches.

If you're wanting to work on your core to help support your back, do two things, and a likely a third. Assuming of course, that you aren't going to see a doctor about it (which is always the better idea over getting tips on the internet.)

First, forearm planks. This replaces the situps. Only do three. Do one for as long as you can, rest for 30 seconds, do a second, rest, do a third. Your goal is 30 seconds three times (eventually - many people start at 10-15 seconds.) That means that the entire exercise is about 2 1/2 minutes. It works

Second, Pelvice bridges. I normally do three count up, hold to ten, repeat ten times, take a break, repeat ten times.

Third, and this is a guess, but it was a big source of my back pain. If you sit a lot (and I have a feeling you do - I did), then a lot of lower back pain likely isn't from your back. It's from your hips. Your hip flexor muscles go from your upper leg, through your pelvis, to your lower spine. When you sit a lot, those go wonky. Stretch and strengthen them. Start with a figure four stretch. 30 seconds, switch sides, 30 seconds, repeat. Two minutes total.

You can do the whole shebang in five to ten minutes. Do it every other day. If it helps, consider adding a hip flexor lunge. As with other stretches, 30 seconds on, switch, 30 seconds, repeat.

I've slowed down a little - six pounds in the last month. Part of that has been stress (I've had a couple of days where I've just blown the food), and part of it is that I've had to tone down my workout schedule as things have gotten busy over the past month. I discussed it more in the fitness thread, but I was getting so overwhelmed with appointments for the kids that I changed my workout plan from 2-3 times the recommended amount of exercise down to just the recommended amount.

Still, I am making progress. Another half pound and I'll have crossed a big threshold. I have another 50-60 pounds to go.

/edit - this year so far my BMI dropped by 6.5.

BH you're probably right on those hips. Ive sat in this chair every day for 27 years. Sometimes 2 hours and other times 30 hours during gaming. Average is 7 hours a day ...lately a bit more. I used to do a lot more stuff like walking and push mowing. Our mall is the 2nd largest in the state and once the largest. We'd go twice a week until 2006. We'd walk that mall shopping for up to 6 hours. Thanks for those links and advice. Dont need to hurt my back more. Ill try those from the links.

Breaking the 210 lb barrier is proving to be extremely difficult. Dropping from 233 to 210 came pretty easy, but I've hovered between 210 and 215 for the past 6 weeks, and can't seem to drop lower.

Need to be far more diligent about the diet. Now if Mrs. Skinypupy would just quit buying large bags of candy to have around the house...

Nice progress there!

I've plateaued a bit myself, partially due to a few super-busy weeks when I slacked off, partially due to a change of routine. I'm back on the ball, though.

I haven't checked in for awhile, but I weighed in yesterday and was back down to 198.0. That's pretty huge for me considering I've been stuck at 200+ for the last two months and had even reached a record high of 205 in September.

I'm eating much better now that we're settled in from our move and are not eating out as much. I'm also running regularly 3-4 times a week and doing consistently healthy options for lunch (salads, wraps, etc.) Hopefully I can parlay that into knocking off another 10-15 pounds. I'd love to hit 185 again, but I'm not too worried about the exact weight if I can tone the dad bod up.
